View Full Version : Custom Sub. Box for S14 Idea

So I will be making a custom sub box for my S14 and was wondering if anyone else would be interested. The box would fit in the Grannys attick of the S14 (that little shelf like spot in the trunk) and would hold two 10"s and maybe.....just maybe, 1 12". Schematics will be drawn up this weekend and a "prototype" will be made in about two weeks max. Positive input is more than welcome. :D

Cool deal. I will keep this thread updated as I make progress. I will post pics to show what it looks like and as well as the final product. All materials will be cut using a CNC machine and will be custom fitted specifically for the S14 trunk.

i might be interested in a 12" with a spot to hold my amp in it too.

Could you attempt to make it in the spare tire spot? Ive always wanted a box that sits flush with the trunk

These are great ideas guys! I will draw up schematics first for the first idea and then work on the sub box for the spare tire area. Might require some fiberglass work and plexi-glass.

That would be a little more customization. I would have to get the dimensions of the amp and them incorporate it into the design. I will keep a note of your request and draw up schematics for that after I complete the original idea.

I know it's not a s14 or even a trunk but innovation was talking bout a floor box with the spare tire.
So here was an example of a floor box

I got a rough schematic as to what needs to be done and how its going to look. I will be inputting the information to AutoCAD. As soon as I have a chance, I will post a screenshot of what it should look like.

I will first use 2 10"s for R&D then once that is completed move to the the 12's

How about a stealth box in the interior quarter panels? (to keep use of the rear seats fold down and trunk space)

Curious what ever came of this. To address a few questions:
* when mounting subs, it's important not only to make it the box/mount strong enough to support the sub, but it needs to be stiff enough to not rattle, and let the woofer work on the air (instead of the woofer working on the basket/mount). Mounting your woofer in the parcel tray will just vibrate the parcel tray, and mounting it in a quarterpanel will just vibrate your quarterpanel (unless you made a solid enclosure in either of those places, and then it's still possible).
* next you have to take the first reflection into account ~ the longer the first reflection (longer distance) the better the sound (generally). Firing a woofer into a corner for instance will give you lots of boomy, horrible-sounding bass, whereas firing it into an infinitely large room will give great fidelity. Don't mount your woofers in tiny spaces facing other tiny spaces.
Everyone wants to reinvent the wheel when it comes to subwoofer placement, but unless it's a show car, it'll almost certainly come out worse than if you just put a box behind the seats facing back into a well-prepped trunk.

Thanks for you input Jordan.
I am not trying to reinvent anything. I am simply going to make a box that will be solid and look great. Eventually I would like to sell these boxes either pre-assembled or parts ready for assembly. Thanks again Jordan.

^^Jeff knows his stuff really well and is seriously pro when it comes to this stuff. He has background in this area
And he has two first names, hahaha.
I've been curious to know also of what this is going to look like

I am not doubting Jeff and I really do appreciate his input. As far as how it is going to look. It is going to cover upper shelf in the S14's trunk and will house two 10's or a single 12. I am trying to make it as flush as possible so it looks built into the car. Installation will ideally be very easy and will be tethered to the car so it does not move anywhere. As soon as we have more information I will post it up and I hope to have some pics of a prototype by next month. Thanks for everyones patience.

I have always thought about this but using a simple 8'' is enough bass for me...maybe a 8" JL W7....but its a tight spot with limited space the box volume has to go with sub recommended specs...keep the updates coming.

It's interesting that you mention a "simple 8in" woofer then the JL W7... there's no reason to run a 8" W7, a smaller-mass 10" driver in a much shallower box will move more air and sound much more musical.

The reason I said simple is cause I'm not looking to go all out with bass (I'm past that stage)and I just want to fill in that low that my components obviously dont have. I figured a 8" inch would not take that much volume. I mentioned the 8" JL because I have used them for a long time and would be my preference...lol
But if this does come through I would definatley sign up for one!
