I have a 1989 240sx with single cam ka24e. My car bogs when you give it gas and slowly climbs up rpms. It's also running very rich. White smoke is coming out of the exhaust and black water type liquid comes out the exhaust and when I replaced my spark plugs the old ones were black and smelled heavily of gas. I've heard of cars ECU running on limp mode or something like that and my car has the same problems as the people who's ECU are running on limp mode. I dont have a blown head gasket because I checked coolant and it was fine and I ran a compression test and it came out good. My charcoal canister was hooked up wrong and I hooked it up right and still nothing. My EGR is bypassed or so I'm guessing because I dont have one.

Heres a list of what I've done so far.

Changed spark plugs

Checked fuel injectors

Cleaned MAF

Cleaned TPS

Checked all connections.

Changed Fuel Filter

Ran a code on my ECU and it came out to Code 55

Did my timing

Compression test results:

#1 - 157 psi

#2 - 157 psi

#3 - 150 psi

#4 - 160 psi

I'm thinking maybe my EGR wasn't bypassed correctly because when I looked at my friends single cam and he has 2 hose that go from a vacuum line under and near the intake manifold and they go to the EGR mine doesn't have those hoses and those vacuum lines are just left open I closed them and still nothing.

It's hard to explain in words so Ill try and take a couple photos and post them up.

But what else could be the problem?

Your headgasket is bad.

Your headgasket is bad.

I checked my coolant and it's perfectly green, and I checked my oil and its normal, and I did a compression test. So I don't think it's head gasket. Plus I dont think a blown headgasket would cause you to run rich.

Well code 55 means there are no malfunctions lol, that's obviously wrong. Maybe you should try swapping the ECU.

EDIT: you could also try reseting the ecu just in case. just disconnect the neg from the batt for ~15 seconds

green coolant wont really tell you if your head gaskets bad run the car at idle and see if it sputters out coolant with the radiator cap off if so your getting blow by gases in your coolant stream. and white smoke from the exhaust is a good indicator of water unless you added some additive in your fuel tank or intake stream ex..seafoam, injector cleaner, octane boost etc...

Ok I'll do that. I heard that if you have a bad head gasket your compression will be bad but mines good.

there are many symptoms of a bad head gasket on my ka for the longest time didnt over heat or anything but my car was getting smog readings from the coolant reservoir when i put a smog sniffer in there. you having overheating issues at all? or does your coolant temp gauge work?

Never overheats and gauge works and stays in the mid range. I've driven it 3 hours straight no overheat. That was when the bog wasn't that bad.

just try the first thing i said with the car running and radiator cap off and see what the coolant does on idle

I've probally reset my ecu a million times lol because whenever I work with my car I disconnect the negative battery cable.

Ok I'll do that tommorow and let you know. Also I'm gonna post pics of this tonight. But there's 3 vacuum lines kinda near the intake manifold. Under and to the right of the throttle body and it doesn't have hoses connected to it. Where do they go?

once we see the pics we could probably figure it out

Sounds like you are running rich from a vacuum leak.

That's exactly what I'm thinking. I'll post those pics up do you guys can see.

Heres the pictures of those 3 vacuum lines. Please let me know where each one goes to. from left to right. thanks.

Lol. you know what I never noticed that.

Yeah, take it off and fix it and you might just get somewhere. This is a KA though, so its not like its under pressure.

Ok ill fix that. But do you think that would be the reason I'm running rich and bogging?

It could be the cause of your vacuum leak.

It could be the cause of your vacuum leak.

OK it's a pretty big crack so I'll just buy a air intake kit with hard piping.

Oh and heres a update. I was told that I can't clean my MAF with brake cleaner so I bought MAFG cleaner and cleaned it today. Now the car runs worse and barley can idle it wants to die. I had to adjust idle air control valve to the highest to keep it at like 800 rpms. Then while my car was running I pulled my MAF plug off and it ran worse. then I pulled each spark plug wire one at a time to check if each cylinder was running ok. When I pulled #1 (Front of motor) the motor dropped idle just a little bit, when I pulled #2 the idle dropped dramatically and almost died, when I pulled #3 nothing changed at all and the same for #4. SO am I running on 2 cylinders? LOL

Possibly, you should be able to hear the missfire if there is one. Fix that leak and look for any extras. When you cleaned your MAF did you tough the probe inside of it or did you just spray and let it dry?

I just sprayed it and let dry. Directions told me not to touch it

Now my ECU is showing code 12 Air Flow Meter Circuit. Does that mean my MAF is bad?

Found the problem. The guy I bought this car off ghetto wired the electric fan to the ground wire from the MAF and hooked it up to a place where there wasnt good ground. I don't understand why people do Shit like that. But anyways wired it back to normal and it running great. Still has some build up in the exhaust from running rich so long. But I plan on getting that out, getting newer spark plugs and a fresh tank of gas with seafoam. Thanks for everyones help.
