I needed help in figuring out which engine is right for my 240.  It is a 96 and i want to put a sr20det into it.  I think a s14 will do the trick, but im still unsure.  Any advice or help will be greatly appreciated.  Also is there anything else i should know before i put my money into this car?

by s14, I'm assuming you mean the blacktop SR?  I think it's pretty much the general consensus, that given the price for import of the engines, it's FAR more cost effective to get a redtop (s13) SR and use the leftover money for additional mods.

Many would claim that such a route would yield a more powerful engine in the long run.  I'm taking this route myself.

would the blacktop s13 fit in a 96?

I've heard that it is illegal to put an older engine into a newer chassis. Just an FYI not sure if that is true everywhere.

It really shouldn't matter about legality because dropping a sr20det in a 240sx I think is illegal anyway.  If anything see if you can get a redtop with a pulsar gti-r internals.

I think internals would probably be last thing if he's doing the swap now...

Basics like FMIC, fule pump, etc... you can boost the redtop quite a bit before you have to build up the internals (not that doing so isn't important too!), I just think it's a lot of $ to plunk down initially (timers, boost controllers etc) before you  even start on internals.

As far as legality, it's a state issue, so check ordinances in your area.  If you're in cali, you're basically SOL... but yes, a s13 redtop will fit in the s14 chassis (they're basically the same engine cept for a ball bearing turbo and some other small things... nothing the $1-2k cheaper redtop couldn't be upgraded with for much less).

Check with the guys at unstable hybrids, srswap.com, etc etc etc... most the questions you have/will have can be answered on FAQ's on those sites... 240sx.org as well.  Best of luck!

I have checked with the guys at unstable-hybrids, there one of the most usefull sites out there.   I live in Florida and are probably going to have them install my engine.  I want to get the engine in first them worry about mods and looks  .Im not to concerned with the legality of this, I just want a car that will blow away my friends.  What other mods (internal or external) that will make the car be as fast as the s14 and can i put any part that are designed for the KA engine onto my sr20det?

Eather SR or maybe a RB20DET, that is a bit heavery, but it would do the trick

Hey Oni just made me think of something, does anyone have any stats on the actuall wieghts for sr20's and rb20's?  I allways hear how the rb's are soo much heavier just wondering how much heavier they actualy are.

You should get an RB20. Why go for the SR?

screw that.  Get the most powerful engine in Nissan's commercial line-up:  VK45DE = 340 bhp / 333 ft-lb

Maybe because the SR is cheaper, easier to find parts for and has nearly the same exact power as an RB20

Right, but it also lacks power. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

Why not go for a CA while you're at it?

What are you talking about, they have the same HP

Has less torque then the RB. I think even stock horsepower for the S13 is less.

go for a GTi-R sr20det, my friend has it in his sentra se-r and its a really good engine. he runs 12 psi reliably.

Wrong the RB has less torque then a SR so it does'nt win there either.

I was informed otherwise by a shop that carries SRs and RBs.

RB20 has 194 lbs/ft of torque most SR's hover around 205 lbs/ft sorry that you were misinformed <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'>

Florida - It's like california, but without CARB.

I'd say if you are going to swap go with the SR. Have you thought about turboing the KA at all? They have about the same potential as an SR.
