You do realize that shimming a VLSD results in it acting like a welded/2way diff?
I would just leave it and learn to love/drive with a 2way. You did something cheap... what did you expect.

cheap shit gets you shitty results. learn to drive it or ditch it and spend some real skrilla.

What? 2 ways lock when a certain amount of torque is applied, not how fast you're going.

I know exactly what you mean, haha. I have a Tomei and it's annoying... I've had people come up to me in parking lots and tell me my car is broken. Usually when you're going that slow you're not applying enough torque to lock it, hence why you notice it.
I still don't know how I feel about my 2 way. My welded made a LOT less noise.

It's because your car has fucking zebra stripes painted on the side and looks like aids. Not your diff.

I just welded my diff.. and it hops like crazy under 5 mph. It is soo annoying cause it just turned into my daily. So the question is if i need it as my daily aswell and a 2-way acts exactly the same way.. then what would be the best for daily and track?? Vlsd, 1-way, 1 1/2-way? any suggestions?

There is NO truth to it, it's never been confirmed or never been denied, I was simply saying it's an urban myth. No need to get so upset. :)
Oh, and yeah, it's got zebra striped so what? I like it. I forgot it takes Type X and stock ass SE alloys to be cool anymore. God forbid someone do something different to their own car. :cj:

I've daily driven both a welded and a 2 way and they're equally annoying. If you plan on drifting at all you need a welded or aftermarket clutch type diff, no questions asked. You're trying to turn a 20 year old econo-shit-box into something that sees the track, you're going to have to sacrifice some comfort.

You kidding? People have been shimming VLSD for years. Before you even had your license, they act like a welded. There is no urban myth for how mechanical parts work. End of story.
I don't know what kind of JAB that is supposed to be... you have stock wheels and drive around/on the track like that. I owned that car over a year ago and had R33 gtr wheels for it but never put them on. You think that is my flagship car or something?
Nothing wrong with doing something different... but everything you're doing is. Buy wheels for your car and paint it something nice and presentable. Not "HEY! Look at my car its ugly AND it only cost me a can of spray paint." Screams brokeass peasant to me.
Oh and YO sacrifice some money to make your car nice before spending more at the track driving around your 20 year old econo-shit-box.

Simply shimming a viscous is NOT going to lock it like a welded; end of story.
And YES I slide on Z32 wheels because I lack power - on purpose. I'd rather get the setup of the car down before I add power. There's no point of having a sweet looking car that's all painted if you're just going to go out and suck and hit shit. I don't understand everyone's obsession with being like Japan thinking you have to have some super JDM sweet looking car to drift. I've seen plenty of guys out at the track with pretty cars and the SUCK DICK at driving; it's hilarious. My car is simply a learning tool and there to have fun; not to please other people. Once I'm better at driving, I'll get a new car and make it look pretty so I don't make an ass of myself. There's no sense in spending tons of money on something you're just going to learn on and put into a wall. :l101:

Fuck you both arguing...it all depends on how thick the shims, will dictate on how aggressively the vlsd will act. Throw some 1.0 or even 1.2mm and that shit will more than likely act like a solid axle.

10-25-2010, 11:10 AM
mine is locked... i put 2 - .8mm shims plus the stock one. it's LOCKED. but i can just take them out if it really starts to bother me...

well i cant tell at high speeds.but its clearly doin it on streets and in lots..i lookd at the axles and they dnt seam to have moved one bit since the install. i only but 1 .8 ontop of the orignal.i heard that should make it a fckn spooled diff

No shit? :confused::confused::confused::confused::confused: :confused:
THE FUCK you think I didn't know that? Either way shimming a VLSD is shitty and cheap as hell so I feel no sympathy for OP that his diff is fully locked rather than on/off like he desires.

but a .8 shim shouldnt lock it up.i mean the axles havent moved the slightest bit from wen i installed it..
and im not askn for ur fckn sympathy i wanna kno if the viscous side gear coupling siezes up cuz i doubt that 1 small extra shim does that much even wen cold.wit the axels half installed it works freely lyk a open diff

the whole diff seems siezed cuz i installed it with the output shafts in the same place..its hard to explain wat i mean. but the axles are always in the same spot.realative to each other that is.. kinda easier shown then explained lol

deal with it.. have some fun in life.. make people look at you weird.. have your car scrape on speedbumps.. either let your tires chirp or clutchkick around u-turns.. if your diff doesn't make weird noises something else in your car will, half of these things are 20 years old lol get used to things creaking. its part of owning a low/fun/old/drift car

Um.
That's what happens when you shim a VLSD.
You put a shit ton of preload on the viscous unit that it pretty much turns into a locked diff.
Your shit is not seized, it's just locked now.
If you expected anything less, you probably should have just kept the VLSD how it was.

What was your reasoning to shimming it? What was your intended goal? Do you know how to properly adjust/service differentials? If you want it to not be locked 100% of the time take out the damn shim.
If you want a "Hardcore"/"Mad JDM tyte yo" diff get the 2 way/or weld a diff and put up with how its going to be annoying when you daily it. If you want a daily drivable diff that isn't going to annoy the shit out of you get a 1.5 way. If you're too broke to afford an aftermarket diff just put the VLSD back to the way it was and leave it that way... Just my $0.02
