The MACCO experience

Sup guys, hows the kids? Good good. Ok, some of you, Toddnapi, have seen my car. Its not great looking. Some of you know I have autobody experience. And all of you know money isnt easy to come by. I am considering taking my car to MACCO for a paint job, just to hold me over till I hit the professional shops.

Does anybody know MACCO's process for paint? If they at least use a mud scrub to remove the gloss before paint?

I know I am not going to get top notch, I just need something to hold me over and make my car look decent.

Anybody have MACCO experience, friends, family, whatever.

Search, people ask about Maaco all the time. I personally had a good experience with them. I have no clue about their prep process :o

The people that have good experiences with Maaco are the ones that do the prep entirely by themselves. If you do your own masking, disassembly, and surface prep, and just have Maaco mix and shoot the paint, it'll come out great.

I've already done the sanding, fill, etc., Im looking for the whole once over so I should only have to tape glass and lights. BUT will I have to use the "mud" (not body fill) and scotch pad to remove the gloss prior to the paint...

The thing that bugs me about maaco is that they use a one step paint process. No clear coat, just one shot.

If I were you I would prep it yourself, and call every paint shop near you and see if they will shoot it cheaply.

just got back from an Estimate. I know about the one shot paint service, it is teh sux0rz...I know. I made sure to note that this has to look superb..

This includeds strip of all panles, door jams, prep and new paint (color of my choice)

It has a 1 year warr. against peeling so thats a plus. If they try to run the bull**** on me, Ill take those faukers to court.

Next, I will be pulling a note from the bank, maybe 10k. I could get a new(er) car but I have a love for my 240 and I want to prove all those faukers who said it would always look like ****...as$holes...

After the paint/repair, no more than 4k, I will donate the other 6k into the vehicle. Meaning possibly an SR with 5 Speed swap. Possibly.

But if not, then Ill get a low milage DOHC and trans, swap them biatches myself and if I have enuff $bling$ left, get some suspension goodies in the mix

Sure, I have been meaning to do a simple write up for Zilvia.

I need more specifics, are we repairing a dent? Are we sanding to metal? Are we removing gloss? Removing old body fill? What is we doin borhter?

That seems high for their job. I have not priced bodyshops in a long long time but does it really cost "that" much to do it?

I would shop around at some smaller mom and pop shops that do quality work and see what their estimate is.

Just ask them if you can see some of their work.

I have a maaco paint job and I think it looks great but it has its problems. The guy that had the car before me had it done so i dont know if he prepped it or anything.

Well its been I think about a year and a half since its been on there and my front bumper is killer. It had 2 bubbles in it which since then one has popped and now its nice and plastic looking. Another was on the bottom corner and it has spread pretty big. Also their is about a million little speccles all over it from normal driving. Ill take some close up pictures later to let you see it.

Everything else on the car is great except for maybe one or two spots from a rock probably. If you want to see anything else on the car like the doorsills or anything just let me know.

welll...... I'm trying to sand it and prep it for a paint job too. Plus I also need to pull out some dents in my real fender panels. I'm probably going to start my own thread with pictures so you guys can see exactly how bad my real panels are.

Well all the Macco's out here are really dirty. I can really see them brinking beer in the paint booth and not knowing was a broom is. Plus a long time ago my mom went for the Macco experience on her volvo, and needless to say there was dirt under the clear coat they applied.
But, if Burt can dig the Macco, so can I.

There ya go My front bumper. Im gonna be getting a new one soon and repainted. To save yourself from this Id say go with one of them invisible bras it should help.

Why are they striping the paint off of the car? They are charging you $500 for striping whole car, and extra for striping other parts. That's stupid IMHO. My dad's owned an autobody shop for 35yrs and I've never seen an estimate for painting a car that high. Ok, realistically you should be looking at $1200-$1500 for a good paint job, that includes sanding and preping. Then do figures on how much it would take to fix all the things you want done to it, dents, etc. Personally I'm thinking you should be paying probably around $2,000. Some of those repairs you could be making yourself as you said that you do autobody work. You'd save alot of money that way.

Im not sure where you pulled your figures, a a whole strip and paint for 3k WITH all the needed body work is a rather cheap figure. Iv'e been two MANY other paint shops and heard 5-6k easy. Matter of fact the only shop I completely trust is a 5500 at least depending on the LR 1/4 panel

Are they using paint stripper to clean it down to bare metal? If you have them do all the work, then yes, it is a reasonable figure. But if you have autobody experience as you stated, then you should be able to do some of the work yourself.

I have experience yes, but I like doing body work as much as I like drywall spackling. I hate it.

I want to be able to blame someone when it doesnt come out right...
