Hi guys,
I recently got an s13 fastback and I'm planning to drop in an SR20DET in it. I've been reading around some forums and read that the SR20 comes w/ a stock side mount intercooler and a stock blow off valve which recirculates.
My question is: Is it advisable to run an aftermarket blow off valve (Blitz, Greddy, etc) on the stock SMIC? I only ask this because I know people usually run aftermarket ones AFTER they have got a FMIC. I was curious what people's take was on this.
Would it be more "politically correct" to get an aftermarket BOV if I increase the boost past stock boost with the same SMIC?
Thanks!

Oh, I didn't know I could do that. Haha
Have you or heard about anyone running into any problems regarding cooling or anything?
But isn't the stock BOV connected to the SMIC in one way or another?

Wow you must have no car knowledge. But dont run smic and just get a fmic dont even waste ur time putting it on. I promise u it sucks. If ur that "tight" on money then get a fucking ebay fmic and bov. Its what I got and it works perfectly fine and i only paid $250 shipped for everything. Just hold ur swap off a little longer until u can afford a fmic.

First off, unless you are getting a front clip from a silvia you probably won't be getting the OEM SMIC anyway. They are mostly useless past stock boost so it is recomended to upgrade to FMIC if you are planning on raising boost levels.
There is so much info here about SR swaps that it will make your head spin. Search around a bit and see what other guys are doing.
I don't advocate ebay parts, If your budget is that small hold off a bit until you can afford better parts.
I have no info on the oem BOV, I run a Greddy RS and it works perfect.
But i would choose OEM > Egay.

LOL I love the hate ppl give ebay. Mines been working perfectly fine, and an intercooler is an intercooler. It has fins that allow air to gothrew it and be cooled to a lower temperature. So u can get the ebay or greddy and get the same resuslts with about a 600 dollar difference. Shit if u wanna be real baller get a water to air intercooler. They only cost about~$250 and those are better then any intercooler out there. So if anyone try to keep you away from ebay tell them to fuck off.

kids giving advice to kids, it's funny.
Anyway if you get a complete front clip nothing is wrong with running the stock side mount intercooler. Especially if you're tight on cash, just make sure to clean and inspect everything before you get it put in your car.
You don't need to take anyone's advice on front mount intercooler this or that, that's all personal choice. That's what they believe makes the car faster, fine let em believe it. You don't even need to run a blow off valve with a stock t25 for that matter if you don't want to.
My advice to anyone doing an sr swap is just make sure you have everything you need and replace all gaskets you can while the motor is out and replace the clutch so you can drop the motor in worry free for a while until it finally shits the bed. These motors aren't getting any younger no matter if someone tells you they only have 20-50 thousand miles on them.
You don't know what maintenance was done and how hard that motor was run.
Once it's all said and done and the motor is running the way it should be, mechanically and electrically, then worry about shit you don't need like front mount intercoolers and greddy this and hks that.
You're just adding more potential problems taking any of the previous mentioned advice.

Hi I'm 19 and I have a fully modded ebay s chassis. Anything name brand is a waste of money. Listen to me cause I'm a kid giving you advice. lol.
No you don't need to run a FMIC. Thats up to you if you want to run that. Like Om1kron said just use that money to do a full tune up. Gaskets and fluids while the motor is out to save your self a future headache. Then start to save for anything you want to add after that.
Yes you can find some decent stuff on ebay but there's alot of stuff you dont want to buy from ebay period. Its better to save and pay once for something good than to buy something hella cheap over and over more than once. Don't be the kid with all knock off shit on your car. Believe me if you ride in a car full of name brand parts that have the same amount as a knock off name parts car. You'll be able to tell the difference and wish you had just saved your money in the first place. Again not knocking ebay just saying don't be cheap with your car. If you don't have the money just save for what you need or want.

Thanks for the advice. Speaking of ebay, i was thinking of getting my SR20 from one of those trusted sellers on ebay w/ ratings of like 99.99%.
Is this a good way to go? Feel free to share any experiences, good or bad
uh, i would assume you can find somewhere in cali thats local and pretty good that will let you actually go pick a motor out.
be sure to find out if the car you are trying to build is legal where you live...

I run a cx racing fmic setup and its not bad and had decent fitment.I would have to agree with them on buying off of ebay,be careful.I've heard horror stories upon horror stories about motorsets from "trusted" sellers. I bought my sr from japanese star motors for 1700 bucks and had decent luck.came with a ecu that had a daughterboard but the t25 was seized up on it.you take a chance when you don't go local.

Don't bother hooking up the oil lines to that turbo either if you don't want to.

Oh SNAP is my car going to blow up now? Compressor surge is tight kids! Run it.
Seriously though, SMIC works fine at stock boost. Gaskets, maintenance, ect. Reroute your heater hoses while the motor is out, you'll thank my later.

I ran my smic with no bov for like 2 years no problem at all. Save your $ and change your gaskets, water pump, oil seals etc instead..

Good thing idiots can pay 10 bucks for a blue name and still spread misconceptions of an sr20 motor.
good job, go pat yourself on the back for your lack of life experience.

The best is to check out the clip for yourself and buy from a trusted shop. Since you live in So Cal there are plenty of reputable importers here that will sell you a good clip.
I bought my S14 motorset from Marco @ SR20Store and he got the clip from G Speed Corp. You can go directly to the source, G Speed Corp and get a clip too.
I also heard great reviews about Pit Garage:
http://zilvia.net/f/businesses/304262-pit-garage-south-el-monte.html
Are you going to be doing the swap yourself or are you going to find a shop?
My advice, spend the money now when doing the swap. Try not to go too cheap and do not skip replacing all the gaskets and seals. Accumulate your parts and when you're ready, buy your clip. You're going to be spending more than you think.

Yeah, I was thinking about getting my SR20 from SR20 store too. I had emailed them and they seem rather legitimate. How much did you end up spending on your swap in total?
Also, what seals and gaskets are recommended in replacing while swapping? A ballpark estimate of how much it will cost is appreciated too. :)
Thanks

Wow just wow, you need to shut the fuck up. An Intercooler is and an Intercooler is the stupidest shit I have seen in a long time. LOL.
Not only are there big differences in types of Intercooler's, but there are also big differences in cheap ebay Intercooler's and quality built Intercooler's.
i.e. bar and plate vs tube and fin. Quality of the cooling gallery welding. Etc...
Your ebay intercooler is going to heatsoak a lot quicker than a quality intercooler and the pressure loss will be different as well.
Now if any of this throws you? You should not be giving advice on Intercoolers at all.
Oh and quite commonly a lot of you think a bigger Intercooler automatically means better.
Size is very important here. To big of an intercooler will create lag in the charge.
Lots of guys stuff big FMIC Intercoolers in there cars with a pretty much stock engine with higher boost. LOL
The average size of the larger FMIC people stick on their cars is a 500HP size cooler. LOL
They could get by great with a nice 24inx3x6 cooler and it would be much more efficient.
No most will not know enough to realize all of this. Though If a person does the research the results they get will be much better.
If you don't know about this kind of stuff you should not be giving advice on Intercoolers period!

No, it won't blow up. I just don't think it's that great of an idea. For me, the risks outweigh the benefits. But it's your car so do what you want.
Good thing idiots can pay 10 bucks for a blue name and still spread misconceptions of an sr20 motor.
good job, go pat yourself on the back for your lack of life experience.
I'm not sure what you even mean by this. You either think that it's a misconception that bov's are there for a reason or that we don't need oil lines. It is my belief that both are necessary for proper operation of the motor. Are you calling everyone who runs a bov an idiot with lack of life experience?
You forgot the sarcastic smiley...cuz if you really meant that, youre a dumbass. :duh:
You clearly missed the point.
