So I did a little poking around the forum and found a couple threads that might relate to my problem. However, none of the ones that I saw pin-pointed my problem. Here is the case: I drive a '93 S13 coupe with a nearly stock KA. I already have chain rattle and this just added to my list of problems. A couple of days ago my car was running great. I just got an Ebay strut tower bar (I know...but I'm broke atm) and I had just got done installing it. I used to have a ground wire running from the negative terminal on the battery to one of the bolts (which I scored to get bare metal) on top of the strut. So I relocated that to on top of one of the feet for the strut tower bar. I also scored the foot of the strut tower bar since I thought my rough idle and stalling might have been the ground wire. But to no avail. My car still stalls while rolling at 40mph in N right after i step on the clutch. A friend suggested that it might be the little hat looking things on the side of the intake manifold. How do I go about checking what is wrong with my KA? Do I take off this "hat looking object" and clean it (and with what?), or could it be something else? So a recap...rough idle (~400-600rpm) and stalling while coasting. Thanks for the help in advance.

Start with cleaning the MAF and AIV those to me are some of the common idling issues for KA24.

Which one is the AIV? And do I just clean it with MAF cleaner? Thanks

they are talking about the IACV (idle air control valve) which is located under the intake manifold.
has an adjustment screw for the idle and looks like this...

So what usually goes wrong with it? Do I have to replace it or can I just clean it? Are the parts expensive? Ppl who have had similar problems with their KA's told me it was probably a vacuum leak, but I can't find any leaks...

if you had a vacuum leak, your engine would rev/idle higher than normal. i dont remember you saying anything like that. so i suspect a dirty IACV which is common on KA's and SR's.
find the hose that leads to the IACV. usually goes straight to the air intake piping that goes over the radiator. should be the size of your fat finger.

it's not my picture so i dont know if that's the exact one your looking for but to give you an idea. all you have to do is trace it back to your IACV to make sure. not hard.
I've heard of people getting good results with "sea foam" but i've never had a problem with a can of carb/choke cleaner which is less than 2 bucks at any automotive store. use the whole can.
look up a HOW TO guide online. pretty basic.

Not always true. Sometimes a vacuum leak (depending on where and how big) can create the engine to bog down...think of a boost leak (it's still a vacuum leak)...the car will idle crappy and drop.
Check IACV and MAF. Clean both. Adjust IACV...it may just need some fine tuning. Also check for vacuum leaks. Your problem is more than likely vacuum leak, or needing to adjust IACV.

I adjusted the IACV and replaced the hose that goes from the intake to the valve cover and my idle seems to be back to normal. However, once in a while it still dips a little below hat I set it to (700 rpm) around 500 rpm. But at least it stopped stalling :) thanks everyone!
