Got my s14 in the beginning of the summer but since I live in Chicago snow seasons coming but my car is running open diff witch brings my question what would be better in snow LSD or vlsd or would they equally perform the same and it's my DD! Hateing comments or helpful comments will be greatly appreciated thanks

First thing's first, a VLSD is a type of LSD.
With that out of the way, any LSD, either helical (or gear driven), clutch type, or viscous (VLSD) will be beneficial in the snow, as it will prevent any kind of pegleg action. Clutch type might be a little too aggressive, and will take some getting used to in the snow I would imagine. VLSDs are usually pretty worn already, meaning they don't lock as well anymore. So it may end up peg legging on you anyways. best bet IMO would be a helical diff.

VLSD and rebuild it by re-shimming it with 2 shims instead of 1. cost $10

Gotta have a proper working VLSD for that to work. And with shimming, say good by to the pinion an ring gear over time. Haha. But still, it's an option

Considering the huge price difference between a vlsd and a clutch type lsd unit, i would recommend a vlsd since your just going to use it for daily driving, unless you like changing your diff fluid every other oil change.

Helical. Helical. Helical.

Sorry for the stupid question but what the hell is a helical diff or what does helica mean?

You are shimming the internals increasing the preload on the VSLD not the bearing shims that keep the ring centered.

As far as the OP's situation. Locking diff is not going to be enjoyable in the snow. Helical is going to be the best bet.

Lol that was funny but almost all the threads I read are talking bout witch is better for drifting either helical or clutch I'm not a drift just a student lol

Pardon my assumption. disregard my "Later gears" statement, lol

i have both a vlsd and a tomei 2way clutch type i swap in from time to time and i enjoy the vlsd more for dd. the tomei is hard to drive in the rain and breaks traction while turning. its great for drifting but no so much for dd. i agree with these guys, get a helical if you can get ahold of one, or just stick with the vlsd

Helicals ( like say a S15 LSD ) will also act like an open diff if you hit a patch of ice or have one wheel in the air, I say go with the shimmed VLSD..
