Posting this for a friend.

Car was running fine, then he pressure washed the engine bay,Tried to start it, battery was dead again. Jumped it and it started up but didn't want to stay on. It would quickly shut off.Got it to idle by giving it gas and eased to under 1k rpms but it idles at a very low rpm. Let it run for a while and it just eventually died on it's own. Battery didn't charge.lights fire up once given gas then dim as rpms drop. same with the temp gauge,if he revs it the temp will go down but if let it idle it will over heat.

i havent taken a 240sx completely apart and put it back together like some people on this forum have, but it sounds like the alternator is done. The alternator i think is responsible for the battery being dead, the car not staying on, how it died on its own, batt not charging, even the lights dimming.

try that... good luck
