we should make a ruck thread haha

Okay.

Here's mine, both of which have utterly failed me. Ruckus is running okay, but it mysteriously stopped doing so and stranded me at a CVS two miles from my house on Friday. I pushed it home when, predictably, it then began acting totally fine. I'm not going to ride it anywhere until I understand why that happened.

This is my 1960 Super Cub which, also predictably, stopped running the instant I took possession of it. Methinks it is a ground on the ignition switch, but we'll see.

Here are a few shots from rides I've either organized or attended:

Rad thread. Been seeing these alot but being from the midwest they are not as plentiful as the west coast it seems. How much does one have to invest to have cool shit on it? MPG rating? Anything worth noting?

WanganRunner
08-25-2010, 09:51 AM
It's definitely bigger in the West Coast, particularly San Gabriel Valley, etc.

We've been having events in DC now for about two years though.

I bought mine new in late 2007 for $2200 out-the-door, gets 110mpg, goes 43mph or so stock. I commute about 50 miles round-trip on it in nice weather.

I think I've got about another $1200 into my bike. ATR extension, MRP pipe, Daytona 210mm shock, NCY seat frame, PWJDM bars/stem/pegs/frame stabilizers, knockoff tanax mirror, Gamin Navi, DIY K&N intake, re-jet, KN Kikaku Variator.

I also just pulled a lot of stuff off the bike. Fenders, floorboard, etc.

I've been looking at the Sachs Madass 125.

http://scootersintheusa.com/images/Sachs-Madass_1.jpg

Everyone is jumping on the Ruckus bandwagon. 50cc is not going to cut it for me when local road speed limits are as high as 55mph.

You can get a swapped ruckus for that much and 55mph.

I think that's what I'm going to do, insomuch as a fatty is concerned. I don't care about swapping my bike, I just want to get 46-48mph out of the GET and I'll be happy.

If I want to go faster, I'll just tune the Super Cub. A cheapo 125cc LiFan swap and some different gearing will get me like 70mph.

The Madass 125 is most excellent, please get one and then post about it. A local guy (John, who is selling his Supermade/LS1 S14 on here) had a 125 that he was selling for like $1700 with tons of extras. I wish I had the garage space, but I'd just bought the Cub.

EDIT: ^^Guy above is right though, for $3k it's kind of steep. You can get a lightly-used 2008-10 Ninja 250R for that and have a real bike.

Anyone build mopeds? I know 240Trainee was working on one like two years ago, not sure if it ever got done. Here are two I made posts about awhile back, click images for more.

I don't understand why the Ruckus is $2500 and the Met is still $2k. It's effectively the same bike.

I kind of like the new PCX, but at $3,400 it's still a little steep for a 125cc.

Always wanted a simple old moped, and then I saw the build thread for this, which is what finally convinced me to get one. I bought a Sachs off Craigslist, but then I decided I do not want another pile of junk to work on, so I ended up reselling it.
Kind of wish I discovered mopeds before cars. I do plan to get another one someday.

Honda elite 250cc. Best scooter ever built proberly. Quit wasting money on these ruckussuidousad. Mine has now 23,000 miles on it, never failed. I know people that have 75,000 on these. Best part is you can buy them for like 800 dollars.
Edit: they also go over 70 MPH. Drove mine from sac to san francisco on more than one occasion.

If you're trying to look cool you shouldnt be buying a scooter i suppose. Show me a ruckus that did over 20k miles. I took my shit on dirt roads, jumps, wheelies, and dropped it like 3 times and backed my car into it.
Anyways, i love that thing, and i dont think theres any scooter as reliable as the honda elite. The thing is more reliable than my car. Has a tiny radiator and a fan.

There is no "hassle" to a Ruckus purchase, at least not in my experience.

Just call first. Say "I want a 2011 Ruckus for $X OTD" and they'll either say yes or not, tell them you're calling every dealer.

It's not like you're buying a house, there isn't much to it.

Elite 250's are cool, very comfy.

I need to spend some time getting my Cub working again. Apparently it runs fine, just fouls plugs in like three minutes.

I think the Ruckus looks like a Fat kid holding a soda and a ice cream, with the icecream melting down his shirt front.

But i have been wanting an older peddle start.
Will be nice when me and the GF move into a loft downtown LA. And easier to carry my camera on, stop and shoot, without having to lock it up like my bicycle.

Course, might come after getting a daily driver :)

That looks like a really tall rear shock. Fatty looks good.

I kind of dig the angled stock tail light, close-ups on that? How have you secured it?

I need to get my bike running right again. Going back to stock exhaust for now, fluid changes, new drive belt, re-jet, redo DIY intake, etc. Also going to chop the front forks to get rid of my reverse rake, do a turtlehead tail light, etc. Then a complete rebuild this winter.

I'd definitely like to get a Ruckus or something similar to ride to work and school. Hype not really in mind, just to save gas. Don't really want to go through the hassle of getting a motorcycle license either, so a Ruckus would be perfect. Can you finance these things? LOL!

its just the stock shock, thats why its soooooo high. i really should get a lower one, would look much better.

and the tails are literally ziptied onto the rear frame. its perched up against the stock mounting bracket.

i need to rejet as well, got rid of the stock airbox in favour of the k&n's, but now im running hyper lean. i have a jiangwayne exhaust i need to install also, but it wont clear my fatty so its on the back-burner indefinitely.

im starting to like these things more and more. I rode my friends Ruckus however he had the 250cc motor or w/e on there. It was fun and the awesome gas mileage is a plus. I wanted to get one a few months ago however i used to take the highway everyday to and from work and that wouldnt be good with this thing ha.

I have now moved 15 mins away from work so this seems like a good thing to purchase to save on gas money since i spend like 75+ a week.

ugh, i still want a scoot. ruckus' are too damned expensive around here used and hard to come by. Zuma's are a bit easier to come by but most of them are older. My buddy and his dad got a 02 i think with like 1200 miles a few years ago for $200, put like $150 into fixing it and tagging it and the thing runs awesome. so fun to just go dick around on.

Knee has been hurting from years of skateboarding, and now i need a break from commuting in the city on my fixie.
And my car pretty much sucks to drive on the daily.

So I picked up this Puch for $660.

runs pretty good.
pretty quick but creeps off the line.
needs a lot of minor work.
bunjy cord is holding the rear of the seat in place.
forks in front are a little lose
wiring could be redone
fenders vibrate at speed, might just remove em.
wiring needs cleaned up
turns off by grounding the remaining ignition wires on the gas cap, lol

lot of fun though
gonna go by a shop called Choke after work and chat the guys there up and get schooled on moped stuff.

went from a 13 front gear to a 18, think its to steep.
but i just rebuilt the engine after the starter plate center bored itself out and locked my rear wheel doing around 50 down Barham in traffic.

So after I dial the clutch a little and get that carb leveled and tuned, i will decide.
right now i dont wanna stay on throttle since i had the whole case open and replaced the crank, so I havent been able to top the ped out yet.

Searched, and bumped!

Recently got into Mopeds myself...I only live 2 miles from my shop, and was tired of driving the Maxima which gets like 15 mpg daily driving to work as it's always short trip around town/warm up mode. Sucks, but it is what it is.

Anywho, we always had this moped at the shop and never drove it. Was my grandpa's buddies bike. I finally got bored and went through the paperwork with it and realized it was titled and somewhat legal. Pushed paperwork through Harrisburg and voila! I now own a moped.

50 bucks in insurance a year, 9 bucks for the plate. PA does not require a M lisence (although I have one).

So my first moped, a 1976 Motobecane Mobylette. It came with a dimoby single speed to start.

http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/223017_10152118609340224_1903287870_n.jpg

http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/183230_10152123132190224_602730955_n.jpg

http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/534022_10152235437510224_898652805_n.jpg

So of course it was slow, so I self ported it. This fucker ripped, but the engine undoubtedly hurt an SPI (case seal). My max GPS was 42 mph downhill on the stock 20mph cylinder. Not bad. IT was gutless though downlow.

So with that being overported, I of course wanted to get another engine. Well that led me to getting another 2 Mobylettes, both 50v (variated!). Both were actually very complete, just needed simple carb cleaning and plugs. Got two running and rolling Mobys for 250 bucks as the old owner wasn't mechanically inclined! Woot!

http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/598916_10152180405205224_262649901_n.jpg

The blue one had a nice runnign engine, so I kept that one aside. Took the Black one's engine and did a mild port, and decked the head for a mild high compression setup. Dellorto 15:15 upgrade, and this bike was a nice reliable 35 mph cruiser. Great in town, and 100mpg! Love it! Put a Varplus on it and she was nice. Still doing some varplus tuning but its' 90% perfect.

With all things though of course I wanna go faster, so I got a Airsal 74cc cylinder

http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/23909_10152301323540224_1921528367_n.jpg

This will go on my 'hot rod' setup on the Orange Moby. I hope it can do 50mph, that would rock. Mikuni Vm20 and a stock exhaust for sleeper q ship status. I should have that done in March, just too cold/lazy to do it now.

I also picked up a nice LEM, with a Morini M02. She's slow as hell, and lame...but whatever. I find more fun making this stuff run again. She needed one new plug for the condensor, and a carb cleaning.

Gonna Bump this thread, it is summer and bike season and all...

Started the tear down of my 85 Spree. going to 150cc GY6 swap over the winter.

pulled it out of the shed, and tried to get the stock 50cc af05e running.

http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh202/tek18b_jimmy/20140619_200233_zpsue3u0uvt.jpg (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/tek18b_jimmy/media/20140619_200233_zpsue3u0uvt.jpg.html)

that didn't happen, im guessing since it sat too long and after trying some carb cleaner and starting fluid it wouldn't start..

so the tear down begins.
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh202/tek18b_jimmy/20140620_160840_zpsslzte5fj.jpg (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/tek18b_jimmy/media/20140620_160840_zpsslzte5fj.jpg.html)

before I gained intrest in the 240 more, I bought some used ruckus front end stuff. I cut my stock forks up to use the stem so I can weld it to the triple tree of a ruckus. which will make buying front end parts easier. plus its stronger than the stock spree forks..
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh202/tek18b_jimmy/20140621_201228_zpsfchdzhqz.jpg (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/tek18b_jimmy/media/20140621_201228_zpsfchdzhqz.jpg.html)

mocked up and not welded yet.
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh202/tek18b_jimmy/20140621_214017_zpsabjr1mjr.jpg (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/tek18b_jimmy/media/20140621_214017_zpsabjr1mjr.jpg.html)

I plan on running a brace in the center from about where the ignition is to under the seat to strengthen the frame.
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh202/tek18b_jimmy/20140621_214027_zps4sy50rax.jpg (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/tek18b_jimmy/media/20140621_214027_zps4sy50rax.jpg.html)

progress will be slow but next on the list is a complete motor/wiring harness, followed by a set of low-down forks and disc brake front. new drag style bars/grips and controls. wheels of choice is gonna be an 8-hole style wheel (3 or 4 inch in the rear and 2.5-3 inch in the front). new lights and turn signals that are flush mount and sleek. new front fender that is small and low profile like the bike below. also what im close close to making mine look like. except with the spree panels unless I come across some smile panels to swap over..

http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh202/tek18b_jimmy/smile_zpsmivfygmh.jpg (http://s257.photobucket.com/user/tek18b_jimmy/media/smile_zpsmivfygmh.jpg.html)

I keep wanting to get a Ruckus or something...but

God damn they are expensive. I'm surprised there is no kit to strip down a Elite S or comparable scooter and make them look cool.

My problem with Scooters is I really don't have any benefit for them. I have a motorcycle endorsement and I would carry insurance since i have no desire to go bankrupt if some idiot in a car hits me. With prices being 2-3k, shit you can buy a nice motorcycle... or I could just fix my Triumph....

I want to build a quadkart when I finish up the 240 project. I didnt have a chance to read all 5 pages yet but if it hasnt been mentioned, its a goped motor with a very small seat and 4 wheels, mario kart style.

There's a pretty large goped community in south FL.

My buddy ports ped motors that make crazy power. 40cc motors doing 55mph. Hes building his own right now with a dual stage nitrous injection, hoping to do 70's....but, he is very secretive of everything!

So anyone rocking a chuckus?

I'm thinking of selling my dirt-bike and using some of the cash to get a chucky.

http://www.scooterdepot.us/150cc-4-stroke-new-style-gas-moped-for-sale-with-trunk-d150l.html

Way I see it, most Ruckus owners modify the damn thing to the point it ceases to be a Honda, not to mention most swap in the GY6 engine anyways!

So China Ruck comes with better looking wheels, hydraulic disk brakes and a 150cc engine. Yes, all the wires, controls, plastics and mirrors are cheap and crappy, but if you are hacking them off and modifying it... so what?

I like Dan's (PBM) comment about his Ruckus.

I recently bought a 2009 ruckus and then I bought everything that makes a ruckus cool, and realized that after taking all of the Honda stuff I was pretty much left with the frame. So then I thought huh, I just bought a $2500 frame ~ that sucks.

I have been thinking about that model for years. Issues I have had are parts compatibility with a real ruckus. Scooter depot is hit or miss on the reviews. Ruckus guys are anti-knockoff so they are no help.

Frame is different on the ruckus clone. A good friend of mine dorby from dorbyworks.com built a badass ruckusclone. Stretched fatty front and rear, mesh loves, rrgs forks, 4 pistons brakes etc. Id hit him up if any of you guys are serious about rucks/clones.

I'm wondering if stuff like the headset is the same diameter. Sort, of like a parts interchange.

Right now, I feel like this thing has the acceleration of Bowser with the top speed of Yoshi. I want to be more Mario/Luigi nahmsayin.

so i bought a ruckus recently from a friend , who happens to have started this thread haha

bought it non-runnning , and got it back from my local scooter shop not long ago and after another friend helped me with other stuff it needed. These things are really fun and for the town i live in, which is college town, it's amazing. Really stoked recently that i have this thing to pick up groceries and go to starbucks. I'd like a faster ruckus down the road... kinda...not really. For what it costs, the fun factor is quite high! 42mph on flats for me. Bangng limiter (stock) on down hills at around 48mph. Probably need a CDI and i can do more everywhere... This thing is pretty solid now!

Triple tree is different iirc, doesnt matter though because when you order rrgs shocks you order them in the correct diameter and length for that setup. Then the wheels, rotors, brakes, etc are all universal and you fab it up to work. Or you buy the stuff from dorby whos already fabbed up the parts and taken the guess work out of it.

You dont need a cdi. You need a variator with a bigger face and a nice belt with some slider weights. Also a clutch and spring upgrade would help. We have the local guys doing 50+ on stock 50's no cdi.

And yes I used to be into the ruck scene heavy. Any questions you guys have feel free to ask.

That honda dio on the top of this page is amazing.

Which really is stupid.

The insane boom to the scooter industry in the last 5-10 years has been because of the proliferation of Chinese scooters. Once, long ago you had to go to a motorcycle dealer and pay $2,500 to $3,500 for a scooter. Today, every pawn shop, hardware store and gas station now sells Chinese Scoots for $600 to $1,200. Or you just have one shipped right to your door from the internet!

While the plastics are crap the engines are fantastic and all you have to do is get 2-3 riding seasons and you can junk it.

Honda should be ashamed for what they have been doing. The Ruckus is like 15 years old and hasn't received an update in almost 10 years. It has wire actuated drum brakes, a 50cc engine and comes in TWO GOD DAMN COLORS.

Please tell me where my $3,000 is going.

It's idiotic of the community to support this nonsense. At the very least Honda should have by now offered a 150cc engine and disk-brakes. It's 2015. For $1,000 more you get a 250cc, twin-disk sports bike that gets nearly the same fuel economy and has like a 10 times the horse power. :bash:

Also, why is the Ruckus, which is devoid of plastic, $700 more then the Metropolitan which is a plastic clad Vespa rip off?

pretty much spot on. most on CL and TR even are insane for the price they want for a stock or mostly stock ruckus. I have no idea how the resell value on these are so high.... and MRSP too. I mean factory is like 2800$ or something crazy. At minimum they could have given disc brakes, 150cc, and better suspension, and still it would cost 3k.

for the price i paid, i am satisified with this thing though. It's cheaper than any bicycle i have so far haha.

For good reason... you'll be throwing a lot of these "cheap" parts at it to keep it running.

I'm debating on getting either a Grom or just converting my bike to a moped. Groms look fun!

Only like 300 more than a rukus but more power/manual trans/better brakes..
