Just picked up an automatic 89 240sx ka24e that has a rebuilt engine. The problem with it is that it runs really slow (under 5mph) and wont go over that. The previous owner rebuilt the engine cause it was blown when he bought it, so he thinks it could be the transmission. Do you think its the trans. (if it was i don't think it would run at all) or possibly the timing wasn't set right? Any help is appreciated. thanks

how does the car idle?
maybe it could be a really bad torque converter.
if the timing wasnt set right, car would idle pretty rough.

A KA motor will start and idle pretty well with the plug wire order REVERSED...but it'll make no power.
Start there...the order is 1-3-4-2...going COUNTER-CLOCKWISE.

By reversed, I mean #2 and #3 wires would be swapped. Just to clarify - The picture above is correct.

the problem wont be timing or transmission. Are there any other symptoms? Idle? Smoke in exhaust? power loss in any accesory, gauge cluster, radio etc.? What exactly was done in the rebuild?

When the car starts it idles good but when I accelerate it only goes up to 2000 rpms and sometimes it backfires through the intake, also when I disconnect the vacuum line air is pushing out rather than in. Basically it was a complete engine rebuilt.

No engine expert but could timing itself be off, not just firing order due to reversed plug wires?

Have you checked everything that has already been suggested..including the base timing?
If so, what is it set at?
Are the plugs wires in the correct order?
If the base timing is correct, and the plug wires on in the right order...then my money is on cam timing. Put it at TDC on #1, pull the valve cover, and see where the cam dowel pin is facing. It should be at 12-o'clock, DEAD ON.
