Can anyone tell me what that sound means?
We checked for leaks, re-did timing, replaced wastegate, checked the oil line, replaced maf and even tried a different filter.
The sound occurs when the turbo starts building boost, while under load, the car feels like it's hesitating/lagging trying to boost. It's almost like there's resistance on the turbo preventing it from spinning freely
I can record a better sound clip later tonight, I was just rushing to get one up.

take off the intake pipe and grab the compressor (when cooled off) wheel to see if it flops around if it does then you need a new turbo or rebuild

It does sound like the turbo is gone.. Wheel is possibly hitting the housing which is making that sound.

Alright, so here's what's up now:
I just got done checking for shaft play and well...there is none. Unless I"m doing it wrong:
YouTube - t25 turbo no shaft play!? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCEB4sZa82g)
Here's a video with a clearer view of the engine bay and the noise coming from the turbo through the filter...weird.

Question: I just noticed that I have a pretty good crack on my turbo elbow, aside from an exhaust leak, would it also cause my turbo to sound like shit?

Wow that look really creepy with you doing that with those gloves on....
So there no major movement front and back and side to side? Some movement is ok like 1cm
Whats it sound like with the filter off?

lol @ the gloves. But yeah, the blade seems to spin quite freely when I tried on camera.
sounds the same with filter on or off. I also tried it with the stock rubber intake hose a different MAF and filter and it sounded the same. The sound seems to be coming from the turbo through the filter/intake pipe.
Is it good to have NO play or is that a bad thing?
Note about the car: I've had this SR for quite sometime, entered a bunch of drift events here in Hawaii and took it out on the streets A LOT. I've hammered the shit out of this engine but always made it a point to care for it. I change all my fluids religiously and never skip a beat.
Could the crack on the turbo elbow have anything to do with it? the crack in on the flange closets to the turbo (5bolt flange).

That's not compressor surge?

I don't think it is...I think I kno what compressor surge sounds like.
I have a s14 t28 coming in with an elbow. I'm hoping it's just the turbo..
