View Full Version : Should I live in Hawaii?

Hey, I already asked this question on another site but I'm not getting many responses.
I'm considering getting stationed in Hawaii but motorsports (specifically drifting) is very much a practiced hobby of mine. Basically, I want to find out if Hawaii has regular drifting events or at least autoX'ing. Also, is there any competent tuners there that can work on a Z33?
Any other info is appreciated, thanks.

if you are air force and trying to go to hickam i don't think there is a track on that island. i am just going off of hearsay but i think you may have to put your car on a boat and ship it to the island that has the track. **again this is not first hand knowlege**

Thanks for the info. I heard that I would have to put my car on a boat. I wouldn't mind as long as its a ferry and I'm able to compet.

what makes you want to go to hawaii? I was born there and lived there for a while/went to school.
just so you know, locals dont like military and they will get in your face to let you know. I almost died at the fist of a 300LBS Samoan thug because i was walking around with a bandana on my head(its hot and i was using it to keep my hair off my forehead)
i mean no that doesnt mean once you step foot on the island you will get messed with, and who knows maybe you will do your 2-3 years and not have any incidents like that. but in my experience, you get sick of being on an island, seeing the same people everywhere, with no getaways (like living in SD going to LA and Vegas and stuff)
I hope you like watersports, fishing, surfing, cause thats the place to be for those kinds of things.
There is def a pretty legit car scene out there, a lot of shows, and shops. the only R34 GTR ive seen in the states was in a shop in hawaii. Im pretty sure you can find some shops to work on your Z.
any other concerns that you have?

hawaii, specifically oahu does not have a legit track at the moment. its been like that for years now so theres car cruises every weekend/ get togethers. other island however have tracks. theres scca auto crossing every month at aloha stadium on oahu. pretty good stuff but no drifting venues unless you like illegal stuff on oahu...

heavenboundkevin,
For the experience buddy.
I'm from LA and I've been stationed in SD already... as well as mainland Japan. Cali is the spot [period] for imports, tracks, and girls but I'm not in a hurry to go home yet (unless I have to). Right now, I'm stuck in southern VA and they have a decent import scene out here - with monthly autocrosses and appx 8 drifting events during the summer.
Jiggs, believe it or not but I parking lot drift almost every weekend. There's a decent sized lot where we can't get bothered by the cops, etc near my house. Anyways, do you know if I can expect something like that somewhere in Hawaii?

honestly man the drift scene died here back when the track closed down. its more of honda/acuras straight line freeway runs. but i have a vert and i manage to get around ;)

Hawaii To Install Anti-Drifting Roads (http://jalopnik.com/5543621/hawaii-to-install-anti+drifting-roads)
Is Hawaii's solution to illegal street drifting an increased support for draconian law enforcement or enactment of anti-hoon legislation? Nope. Anti-skid road surfaces that have the added bonus of making the roads safer for everyone and faster for enthusiasts.
Residents along Hawaii's twisty mountain roads have long complained of the noise and danger caused by punk kids illegally drifting, but the police haven't been able to deter the practice. Rather than fitting speed cameras, speed bumps or otherwise ruining the roads for slightly more law-abiding drivers, the local government plans to pave the mountain curves in a high-grip surface that'll virtually eliminate skidding and therefore drifting
In this instance called Tyregrip, but also known as Shellgrip in the UK where it's used to improve the safety of very dangerous corners and slippery bridges, the technology packages a very sharp aggregate inside a tough resin and is applied on top of the existing road surface. It's typically impregnated with a contrasting color to alert drivers to its presence. It works like very rough sandpaper, increasing the friction between a tire and the road, dramatically improving grip. It's not used across long stretches of road because that increase in friction also results in a proportional increase in tire wear. The surface works especially well in wet weather, where the sharp points of the aggregate provide very good levels of grip even when covered in water.
In addition to making drifting nearly impossible, the surface will increase general safety by improving grip levels, especially in the rain. Of course, more grip also equals faster corner speeds for drivers like you and me.
Hawaii plans to install test strips of Tyregrip on eight sections of road popular with drifters. If it proves successful at limiting their antics, it'll be rolled out through other trouble spots too. [via MSNBC]

Hey,
What's 'BUILT THE TRACK?' I mean, I understand that it's a motorsport park that people in Hawaii are trying to get off the ground.. Anyone have anymore details about it?

it's actually called Build the Track. There's a forum on hawaiitalks.net that talks about the status of the track. Basically it's been an ongoing effort by the Oahu Motorsports counsel to get a track back up on Oahu since the old one got shut down. There are still tracks on the neighbor islands, but with the superferry no longer in service, there's no chance for the people on Oahu to legally race.
They're working re-opening this track, now renamed KRP, Kalaeloa Raceway Park (http://www.kalaeloaracewaypark.com/) but so far I believe there is no track, it's just dirt/sand. Better than nothing I suppose. As to why it's taking so long to do this, it's just really difficult when you have to face environmentalists, neighborhood boards, and all the politics. I myself support the build the track events because it would be great to have a track again which I think will greatly revive the scene in Hawaii, which basically dropped off exponentially.
Here's a recent letter that talks about the politics of the track if you're interested...
