What are the pros and cons of getting a carbon fiber hood, besides the obvious weight reduction?

you'd better hope that you don't live in a place where it hails a lot

falling ice the size of apples is NOT a good thing

pros: looks cool

cons: costs money
possible fitment issues, might need to use hood pins (buy a nice one and you wont have to worry about it)

If you get in a front end collision exspect to be decapitated.... carbon fiber doesnt bend well, there for no crumple zones... I've seen a video were the hood went straight through the pillars and empailed the crash dummies at a high speed....

i got in a front end accident with mine it just cracked.. everything else is fine.. but right above passenger headlight it made about a 6 inch crack give or take.. and it split.. tis still VERy serviceable.. because it DIDNT crumple.. its just al ittle well cracked.. btu looks decent actually.. they are neat.. BUT!!! if your going to autocross.. its a big NO NO!! weight modifications screwed me bad in my class.. it through me in EP class :( bad bad bad

The reason I was considering a carbon fiber hood was hail damage that my car suffered. On Friday there was a huge hailstorm, putting about 300 dents in my stock hood, 100 on the roof, 50 on the trunk, a few on my left front fender. I have to pay a $200 comprehensive deductible, but I figured I'd save myself some money if I went with carbon fiber opposed to stock. Will hail damage the CF? And the story about the driver being impaled , why wouldn't the stock hood ipale you?:coolugh:

Just out of curiosity, how much was the initial estimate of damage? Small hail should not damage the carbon fiber, pea size that is, but large softball/grapefruit size will seriously damage it.

Hey Tricky1980,
Why did they make a big deal about the hood? I guess what I should ask is why are the weight requirements such a big deal when it come to hoods? I just want to know (on your side). :boink:

The Hail was the size of large marbles and it was coming down like pouring rain. I'm getting an estimate tomorrow, I know it is going to be well over 2large worth of damage.

Hail the size of softballs would destroy a stock hood just as fast

what's the average weight difference between the stock hoods and a carbon fiber hood?

weight would nearly double the weight on a CF hood...
