View Full Version : S13, Post J30 5 lug, Wheel bearing too tight?

S13, J30 hubs with the S13 wheel bearings pressed in, new snap ring groove machined. I slid the hub/bearing on the spindle, put the S13 lock washer on there, then tightened the spindle nut up to 80ft/lbs. The hub was very tight, aka lots 'o friction and it doesn't spin very freely. Is this normal? Or is there a shim in the rear I'm not putting in or something? From all the how-to's I've read, the J30 assembly just slides on and you *should* be good to go. Ideas?

were the bearings new or used?

Brand new.
For what its worth, if I hand tighten the spindle nut, there's no forward/back hub movement and it spins freely.

Did you put the washer on behind the nut!
or was the bearing put on the right way! like not flipped around as in the rear to the rear?

Lol wut?
Yeah I put the lock washer on the spindle first, then the nut. Bearing was pressed in just like the old one was in the old S13 hub. Seal side towards the motor.

For the record, the proper torque for front hubs is 170 ft lbs.

Doesnt the washer go on the outside so it is against the nut?
I know it does on S14s...
And yes be sure it is at least 170lbs.... it is better to have the wheel bearings torqued a little more than not enough.

I did....
It went like this: Bare spindle. Slide hub on. Put lock washer on. Put nut on spindle. Tighten nut. Wheel bearing not move easy.

Until the bearing grease warms up it should be a little tough to spin by hand. try it again after you drive it around the block.
