View Full Version : disabling clutch start switch?

Sorry but I tried searching.. couldn't find much.
I'm a bit of an SR n00b. Came from the DSM world, where it was very very very bad to push down your clutch upon startup (no oil flowing + too much load on thrust bearing + scraping = crankshaft moving from side to side). I do hear a bit of scraping on the SR until the oil starts to flow. Any clues on how to disable the clutch start switch? I tried unplugging things, I tried shorting connectors with a paperclip. Can't seem to find the right connection.
Thanks in advance!

The reason that is a problem with the DSM is because Mitsubishi sells janky motors where the crank walks, that is why Eclipse owners are always weary about holding down the clutch. In the 240SX community, we pride ourselves in TRYING to destroy our cars; many try, few succeed. You'll learn to love how durable most of the NISSAN parts are, there are very few defects or recalls that need attention.
The SOHC is the only motor that I know that could use pre-lubrication. I dont think the DOHC ever had much of a problem with timing chain rattle other than the guides which would sometimes need replacement based on mileage. As for the SR, it has an anti-drainback valve in the oil filter baffle which keeps some oil in the system, I really dont think pre-lubrication is an issue. All around, the SR and SOHC KA are very good motors. The chain tensioner on the SR is also very strong and good quality, a nice design thats also easily accessable should it start to fail or need inspection.
The clutch switch is easy, its located at the top of the clutch pedal. Unplug the connector and loop it, its as simple as that, oh noobie. :)
Good luck,
- Mike

you make a lot of claims man i really don't think you know your ****
4G63 is a great motor older designs had the possibility of crankwalk but since the motor was turned around in the engine bay for the evo 4 that problem was aleviated not to menton the engines are tough as hell i have seen DSM's go through a lot of torture and still come out like a champ and compare how many 10 sec DSM's there are to how many 10 sec 240sx just a hunch but i don't see all of these drag guys using mitsu motors because they are janky and unreliable

I dont know my ****, but I do know my shiet. I dont like Mitsubishis, I think they are dog poo. I dont like drag racing, so this whole 10sec vs what 240SX's can do is a big waste of time. Drag racing is for homos. A manufacturer that doesnt recall crank issues is also ghey. What does this all mean?

Yep, I'm close minded and at my age.. I dont give a flying fack. :)

actually mister DSM lover,Old_s13 speaks the truth. Toyota and Nissan are Japan's #1and #2 automakers Honda is a close third. followed by Suburu. Mitusubushi comes in right around Mazda in terms of reliability with Mazda edging them out.
In fact it was even in the Japanese press about Mitsubushi aka DSM hiding potentential defects of workmanship and complaints of those to avoid having to issue several major recalls.
Fact is DSM's may look nice , may even drive nice but have never been known to hold in the long haul. Any car company can build a car spends millions throwing out a pro rally version with beefed suspension ,mechanicals and body and use it as an example of how reliable they are. can we say Kia? Or Hyundai? would you say those cars are reliable just becaue they have race winning or competing pro rally cars?
I have been around Japanese cars since the late 70's and can attest to the fact that DSM's are just out and out junk IMHO and Old_s13's as well. Nissans and Toyota's on the other hand have been known to be 200k mileage machines.

Personally, I consider Toyota at the top of the list.. I've found their cars to be more durable than NISSAN, but it doesnt matter.. I like NISSANs originality way more, Toyota always seems to follow-up with better designs. First come Z, then come Supra. Its going to happen again.. what, 1-2 years before the Supra comes out (again) ? :)
I like some DSMs.. but very few. I like the 3000GT, but its never been special enough to gain any recognition from my behalf, thats for sure. I've always looked at Mitsubishi as a company that can offer "competetive products" but in the rankings, they're just never as high as Toyota, NISSAN, or Honda. Plus, they never look as good and arent as reliable either.
So I'm a hater.. say what you will, but thats my opinion.. as stupid as you may find it to be.

I had a fairly quick 2nd gen Eclipse GSX. Old_S13 has been in it and can attest to the feeling your stomach makes when it wraps itself around your spine from a first gear 7000 RPM AWD launch.
I sold it because
a) I hate mitsubishi. they do not take care of their customers
b) their dealers suck (then again, most dealers do)
c) Yes, quality was an issue. although mine was clean as hell
d) while it was insanely fast 0-60, I was getting ****ed off cuz it didn't feel "nice" to drive like my S13s, and I was sick of getting spanked in the hills by my friend's M5 and M3 as it handled like *** and couldn't stop. Plus it was a rattlebox.

Dave, did you ever make a gallery with pictures of that car? Post some pics, it was a nice GSX.. I am sure people wouldnt mind seeing what you did to it.

I've driven one DSM and will never touch another. I felt like I was sitting in a high chair while driving. It was the strangest seating arangement I've ever felt in a car and all I have to say is: "No sir, I don't like it."

Did someone say 240's cant drag or do a 10sec quarter. Ummmmmm I beg to differ. I've seen pictures of an S13 with a fiberglass body, and umm yeh hes got the RB26dett in it. Yeah it runs 8's in the quarter. Maybe this was a waste of time. Yes toyota is pretty reliable, but however two years ago I ran my 91 KA24de with no oil pressure at all for 3 months(and i wasnt divin like grandma). Now the same motor is still running great(155,098 miles and yes now it has pressure). In fact last night i decided to race some guy in daddy's '00 vtec prelude, I pulled on him and had 3 people in my car. Point: All cars are crap just hope you got a good piece of crap.

i believe youre referring to HKS's drag 180sx, which was running low 7's and if im not mistaken has broken a 6 by now. i know their drag supra broke a 6 for sure
anyways, like drift freaq said, you can take any car and turn it into a purpose built racing machine with enough money. we're talking more about factory quality issues here. mitsu's do have a tendency to well...fall apart. they're definitely fast cars (or can be made to be so, at least), and are very cheap to make fast compared to most other late model imports. any car rx-7 owners would call unreliable must be a total ****box.

In stock trim, the 240SX was never designed or intended to be a drag car. Its multilink suspension shows that it is a car designed for the turns.
Just like my main man Mister T said, ANY car can be modified for another purpose. Of course, being a part of the 240SX community for over 7 years now I have seen many examples of drag-240's. The ones I have seen that DO put out insane drag times do NOT have factory rear end or suspension setup.
