So I have a problem with my car and I was hoping that some of you guys might be able to help me figure out what is wrong. I have an S14 with an RB25. The engine is stock, and the car had a 6 puck sprung clutch in it when I bought it. I put in an ACT Extreme clutch, and a JUN ultra lightweight flywheel. I also replaced the TOB with an OEM one when I put in the new clutch/flywheel. As soon as I put in the new clutch, the pedal felt funny, but the car shifted fine and had no problems. I thought it was the pedal adjustment, so I played with it, adjusting it back and forth. This didnt help, so I replaced the clutch line with a Stainless Steel Braided line, this did not help either.

One day, I was driving, and punched it in first gear and right as I pushed in the clutch to shift, something happened. It seemed like the clutch wasnt working. It was stuck in first and the pedal wouldnt disengage the clutch. I jammed it into neutral and pulled into a parking lot. When I would try to go into first gear, it would grind, unless I jammed it in (then it would go CLUNK [metallic noise]) 2nd gear would go in hard, but not clunk or grind, the same goes for 3rd through 5th and reverse. I tried adjusting the pedal again, and it was no help so I just drove it home and parked it. I did a lot of research and thought that it might be the clutch slave cylinder, so I bled the slave cylinder over and over. This also did not help. I did more research and after that I bought a Nismo slave cylinder, and put it in last night. The Nismo slave clyinder did not help, and the car is doing the same thing.

I am assuming that I am going to need to drop the transmission again, but I have no clue what could be wrong. Anyone have any ideas? When I put in the new clutch/flywheel, it was my first time dropping a tranny, but I always do research and do thing the correct way, so Im pretty sure that I didnt mess anything up when I did it. I will be greatful for any input you guys have, as I'm sure most of you are more experienced than I am.

Here is what my car is doing:

- 1st gear grinds if I put it in slowly
- 1st gear goes CLUNK if I jam it in fast (no grinding, just a metallic clunk)
- 2nd - 5th and Reverse go in hard, but do NOT grind or clunk.
- When The car is in gear, and I push in the clutch, it will keep rolling (like the clutch is - engaged slightly)
- The car drives fine when in gear, just shifting makes me want to cry.

Thanks guys – oh yea, if you have any questions, just ask!

It sounds like the clutch isn't disengaging fully and you have to grind into gear.. although I'm not sure why you can put it into 2nd-5th gears..
Did you check the clutch master cylinder? The seals could be going.. (go under the car, and check whether the slave cylinder is pushing the fork all the way in or not when someone else presses the clutch pedal)

Other than that, the fork pivot could be bent or broken. In that case the fork will never really disengage the clutch properly since it has no leverage. Therefore you have to pull the transmission out and check. That usually happens when the pressure plate is heavy.

My clutch went recently, (one of the clutch disk springs popped out), and I could never engage/disengage the clutch properly. However, I couldn't shift into any gear (unlike you).

I just hope it's not the transmission itself. As far as I know those are quite durable..

Keep us posted..

when i was bleeding the clutch, i had my wife push in the pedal, while i sat under the car and bled it. when she would push the clutch in to the floor, the slave cylinder would push the fork about halfway (not all the way to the other side of the transmission) <-- not sure if that makes sense, im also not sure if thats how far it is really supposed to push it in. the pressure plate is really heavy (i bought an act extreme clutch, it supports up to 630ft lbs of torque) i dont think the master cylinder is leaking, because there is no fluid dripping anywhere from it, and the fluid was exactly the same level as when i last bleed the clutch (at the max line of the master cylinder)

thanks for the input by the way, im wondering if the fork pivot could be bent :( im going to have to find a shop around here to do this in because i dont have a lift or all of the tools that im going to need at home.

oh, and if it is the clutch pivot, when i replace it, will i just be doing an oem one, or is there a better alternative?

fork could be bent,
did you put the release bearing on right? if you don't put it on right, it could have come off the fork and started the problem.

for the pivot, you can get a nismo one. it's a little stronger than the stock one. normally if you upgrade to a your clutch, you'll wanna upgrade the pivot.

umm... im not totally sure if i put it on right, it was the first time that i dropped a transmission in a car, plus it was a while ago. i thought i got it on right, but i kind of remember when we were putting it back together, we were talking about the fork and deciding which way it went...

thanks for mentioning that, i guess ill have to drop the tranny again and take a look, ill keep u guys informed!

Sorry to hear you're still having issues bro, I remember you posting a couple months back. Unfortunately, still can only think of the one thing, unless your synchros are starting to go. Hope that's not the case for you.

Did you go through the break-in period? If not, you should have. Exactly what happen with my bnl a while back when he had a s/c gsr.
