View Full Version : Which one to get...

Well, I'm stuck on which car to get. I drive a crappy little neon thats like, on its last breath of life, old clunker I use just to go to work and back. Looking at 240sx or 300zx. I've seen a lot of talk about 300zx n/a and tt, why do people buy the n/a and then put the front clip of a tt on it? Wouldn't it just be better to get a tt? Also, the 240sx there seems to be sooo much you can do... I def want something that can get up and go. I live in a town by Albuquerque and everyone around here drives eclipses or civics with exhaust and a bodykit and they think there super pro... We do have a drag stip and I hear the 300zx tt is really good for drag but idk, also gotta think about gas mileage... Could also get a 240 and drop in a SR30DET, doesn't seem to be THAT much compared to the others and you get a pretty good boost in power. How hard would it be to convert to RHD? I'm moving to japan in a few years when I get my degree so I would like to get used to RHD before then, and it would be neato having one out here, until I hit the drive thru... I just don't know what to do, both cars look so good and you can do so much with them... so hard to make up my mind D:

Also, budget isn't that big, bills murder me... 240sx, 300zx n/a and tt are all about same price on craigslist out here, pretty rare to find a decent one though, there all crappy and beat up >.<

300ZX isn't in the same class as a 240. Its a better built car. You can drop engines in Z's as well.

Z's are nice. But you need to know what you are doing with them. Or have the money to pay someone that WANTS to work on it. TT's give off so much heat under hood most of the old rubber hoses are gonna be cooked.

Why is it people have such a difficult time piecing words together in a way that is understandable....

Just buy a 240, They are cheaper to build and maintain. Plus... Who in their right mind would bother converting a 300zx to RHD?

Either way really you are looking to spend good money, You know what... Just keep your neon and do some maintenance.

Although you are being sarcastic (i hope) that just sounds dumb. When is a mod going to look this thread? Where's That Guy at when you need him..

Higher Quality materials throughout, however they do "Feel" very different from a driving standpoint. 300zx TT is also a nightmare to work on thanks to an extremely cramped engine bay and twin-turbos wedge up-behind the V6.

There is no doubt a good overlap in price with swapped 240s and turbo 300's, but be careful, you can get a clean SR car for 7k all day, an 8k TT will no doubt be running all stock parts, high-mileage and if not now, will need some costly/pita maintenance shortly after buying.

Eek, SR20DET, mistype there. Also, 240sx's on cl for my area are 2-3k. A few are 5k but has the sr20det swap already. then the 300zx's are 2.5-3.5k for n/a OR tt, there about the same... I just read a lot on 300zx n/a then getting a front clip off a tt and swapping it. Still don't know why... I just read a lot on how good 240's are, then I read a lot on how good 300's are... I like both cars so far, went down to look at a 300 tt yesterday, 2.5k and it was pretty clean and ran great... My dad owns a shop so any work done will be done there...

And yes, my degree is in Asian studies and I'm actually from japan, was born there and spent a few years there before parents moved to America.

Look for a clean chassis to work on. I'd rather pay a little more for a stock clean chassis than pay less for a beat up high mileage car with some mods.

I say you keep the neon and swap a srt 4 motor in it. Then you will have a realiable car and it's a sleeper. Nobody will know what hit them. If not then go with a 240sx coupe. ;)

First and foremost, what the fuck are you planning on doing with this car. Thats what will decide which car to get. Z32s dont turn for shit and S-chassis aint exactly known for a drag car unless you throw thousands of dollars into it.

Doesnt sound like you can afford much to be honest, why waste what ever lil resource you have on modding a car that you're gonna get rid of when you move to Japan? Sounds like you're gonna be the typical college kid who's gonna build a car, powered by hopes and dreams...

I think that problem is more indicative of modern American youth raised on to much Anime and Video games.

Most of the world is still dreaming of moving to America, while somehow, in the last 30 years, for most Americans, everything oversea became better, compared to the previous 200 years where the rest of the world sucked and this was the place to be.

My old room mate is a business major who is taking Japanese language classes... his dream? To "move to Japan and be a businessman."

They call those "weeaboos". As for the Japan thing, if you look like the gentleman on the right then you should go. If you look like the douche on the left then you shouldnt.

Totally had to do the "hold hands up, and the left is the hand that the index finger and thumb makes an "L" on".

About the moving to japan thing, I am already a Japanese citizen... I have dual citizenship of Japan and America. I was hoping to get a car, do some mods to it and take it to japan with me so I'll have something out there... And I don't want a civic. EVERYONE out here has a civic or an eclipse and there all wieners. They throw on a crappy bodykit and an exhaust and think noone can touch them. And no, I'm not keeping the neon. Its a piece of junk, I bought it ages ago when it was already all beat up and stuff. The interior is horrible and I haven't wanted to dump money into it to make it good because I don't want the car. I actually kinda gave it to my sister to drive because she needs a junker car. She totalled her car, she had a 1977 cobra 2 with a mint interior... She can't drive worth crap, so I was gonna give her the neon until our dad bought her a decent car at the insurance auto auction. Atm, 240sx is sounding pretty good, I wanna drop either an sr20det or I would really like a RB25det. Put some different turbos on it and make it rhd and I think it would be good. Should beat everyone out here pretty easy...

Later on I might do some more stuff bodywise, I like the skyline taillights but idk how they would look on a 240. I'm not a real big fan of the coupe but it looks a lot better then the car I was thinking of driving for now which is a 89 foxbody mustang my dad just finished building, really hate that bodystyle. I did see a convertible coupe on craigslist but he wanted 6500 and it had no engine or trans though... They got a few other ones on there pretty cheap. Gas mileage is pretty big to, I know I can't expect 30 mpg but whats the average mpg between a sr20det and rb25det? I know they will be I guess rb20det is also an option, so many choices @[email protected]

You won't when you turn 22.

Have you looked at the car import laws of Japan?

And I don't want a civic. EVERYONE out here has a civic or an eclipse and there all wieners.
So, Not having one of those won't make you a wiener?

All these hopes and dreams are great. But, what do you want from us?

We are not going to research stuff for you. Everything you are asking has been covered. Search!

WOW...wtf...you said "neato"...First off scrap the neon!!!buy an s13(cheaper),at least a 91 unless you want to build a sohc, that isn't a convertible(gotta think about theifs)..and if you're really serious about moving back to Japan then don't worry about swapping in a new motor since you said your on a tight budget, and you'll get pretty good gas mileage with the KA24DE. Also don't worry about converting to RHD because you probably wouldn't know where to begin, it's not as simple as you would like to think, and you'd be without a car for a while. Just buy a new car when you get to Japan if you want a RHD. Now go "DO WORK"
