View Full Version : Forum Redesign Team

I know that a redesign for the site is in the works and many of us rank and file members aren't much involved. Still, I wanted to add a few observations in the hopes that others might do the same, with the hopes of adding to the existing dialogue about the future of the site:
1. Division of forums: I know that it is harder to keep an eye on multiple forums, etc. However, it seems that splitting into a few more would help. Specifically separate forums for Chat, Tech, Events, and For Sale are keepers. I'd also propose adding the following:
a. Off Topic Chat - I see that there are several of us, including mods that get sick of the post races and other BS that is going on in the existing chat section. Chat has a point of uniting a community, but when you have to log through 4 pages of posts after returning from 12 hours away from the screen, it is a bit much. Looking back through 4 pages of posts, I found the following: approx. 21 were chat-like; 20 were totally off topic jokes, etc.; 10 were appearance related; and 11 were technical (that doesn't begin to delve into how many substantive topics become unrelated free posts). I would hate to see Zilvia become the next Superhonda or ClubSi, but with numbers and attitudes like this it's happening already. Either we need moderators willing to be a$$holes or an off topic forum for the kids to play in. In my experience, no site (except those subsidized by DC Sports) lasts long once it gets overrun. For my part, I have seriously considered avoiding chat altogether b/c it is just too much time lost to things like jokes I really don't want to hear and posts about music, TV, and the like.
b. Appearance - At the present, there is no forum for those interested in detailing their car or adding body kits, custom lighting, stereos, wheels, etc. However, there are a significant number of posts of these topics currently split b/n Tech and Chat. I think we would all be better served by a devoted forum so that those who are intersted in these topics could go there. I also think this would help the "health" of the community (i.e., keeps those almost exclusively interested in performance from starting rice debates or resenting those that are almost exclusively interested in looks).
c. Archive/Best Of - Several boards have these forums and when properly used, they are very helpful. If a certain number of people stated that they wanted a thread archived, it could be placed there. This way, many of the redundant debates (SR vs. KA; Best Coilovers; Which exhaust; How to Install STB; etc.) could be referred to, rather than reargued. It's also a great resource when you are looking for information in a hurry.
d. Reviews - self explanatory. Maybe sorted by item type (i.e., strut bars, brake pads, exhausts) and then members can post their experiences in these topics. This would keep mods from having to separately update the reviews section, but they would have to cull them every so often to keep it to facts/opinions and not discussions (which are better suited to tech).
e. Other? - I wish there could be separate forums for Tech Power and Tech Handling, but I'm not sure there are enough posts there to make it worth while.
2. Avitars vs. Signatures - I may be alone in this, but I am getting tired of all the pictures in signatures. I think avitars are cool, but I don't like sig. pics for two reasons: first - too big... when I'm at work, I don't want people seeing prone Asian women or giant cars on my screen when they pass my office and when I'm at home, I don't want to wait for them to load (a thread ABOUT pics is obviously a different story). A smaller pic in the avitar is great, but some of these sig pics are too big; second - quantity... someone already has avitar + two pics, others are one and one. Is there a limit? Should I have 10 pics in my sig?; third - waste of bandwidth... I just feel the space is a waste that could better be used for alternate forums, a reviews forum, etc.
3. Post whoring - Few things make old members leave like kids playing in the forums. As a former Hondan, I saw too many good forums go bad and would hate to see that here. There are already about 10 people that I would rather see break down then help b/c of the way they treat this board like it's "OffTopic.net" or ClubSi. Honestly, I have no idea what some people here drive or care about b/c they only seem to post in OT threads. Spamming and whoring is not appreciated - I actually saw one today where someone mentioned rebelling against authority!! This is a car community, for Christ's sake, not Stalinist Russia... if you don't like the authority, get out!
4. More emoticons - these are cool and fun and seem to make for more expressive discussions (or so I've found on other forums).
Finally, I wanted to thank Mark and the mod squad for all their hard work in making this a great Nissan community. I appreciate all your efforts and don't mean to take away anything from the great results so far. I just wanted to add my bit about what would help keep it that way as it goes through the growing pains that every list has. Good luck
Mark

I would like to second everything said here.
I also hope, as I always do, that I am not one of the post whores, but I guess I don't really know for sure. I make off-topic posts, but I try to a- keep them not too far off topic (ie: at least they're about cars) and b- post on topic stuff too. After all, owning a 240 for two years does give you enough experience to handle answering certain questions.
But, uhm, I should stop going on about me. What I had really want to say in this post is that those are really good calls. The suggestion to divide the forums up a little bit further has been made before, but here it is spelled out a lot clearer.
Also, the pics in the sigs is a little out of control. It's one thing to put a pic here and there, but it's another entirely when page load time is hindered by just how many pics need to load - not to mention the extra scolling needed just to skim down the posts.
And, uhm, the proposed "Appearance" section covers, I suppose, the frequently suggested "Installs" section, so I guess that's everything.

I seccond both of your opinions. I also think we could use a chatroom and a members profile section. Also FAQ and How-Tos on basic maintenance.

I agree with everything said thus far.
On the issue of the sigs...they're supposed to be limited to three lines...and they should only include one small/medium pic. I don't think we should do away with them altogether, though, b/c it allows each person to express his/her own personality etc. But when the sig is bigger than the post itself, it's pretty rediculous. Avatars should also be kept pretty small. To pick on chickenmanq, I always have to look at a big pic of that ugly ass truck everytime he posts something .
And something I'd really like to push is some sort of member pages that are kept up by each member....or at the very least, a more inclusive "Rides" section.

It seems that since there is a rides section, there wouldn't be a need to include a pic of your car in the sig. Everyone has their car in their signature but there are only like 3 cars in the rides section and 2 of them belong to mark.

I like ALL of hippo's ideas. Excellent job of laying it all out.
I would like to see a members Rides Forum as well.
Maybe a few more threads per page as well. Maybe 5-10 more? Or maybe even if the new software gives the choice to put as many threads as you want on a page, that would be nice as well.
Seems like a very good plan too me.

posting small insignificant replies, that do not add to the topic, and only serve to increase the number of posts you have.

about the sigs...why not have a feature where the sig can be displayed if the person chooses it to be...like an option feature at the top? just a suggestion...then everyone is happy

you know...that's not a bad idea. No pics in the sig, just a link to your member/ride page + a few more lines of whatever. It would definitely make for cleaner forums...not having 8 pics of the same beige 240 in one thread . Whether or not something adds to a topic is such a matter of personal opinion though. Sometimes you can agree, disagree, approve, dissapprove, and/or otherwise add to a thread with a very small post.
If anything, I think post-whoring is making two or three posts instead of one. Or, of course, what whores do after whore'ing ... the absolutely hysterical opposite of "pre-whoring". Oh Zeus, I still laugh at that one. =)
I love the Members' Rides section, btw. That would be very cool. Don't worry - I wouldn't muddy it up with my Honda or anything. But, it'd be a great place to browse.

I think we should do how DTMpower does it and have a separate section for s13's and s14's in regards to technical stuff and chat with model specific topics
and we definitely need an off-topic section
the chat section could become a section devoted strictly to talking about 240s or at least cars

I think the reason there are only 3 rides in the rides section is because the process is messed up some how. If I recall correctly the new software should allow everyone to create and control there own ride page. Transient would know more then me though about it (or of course when West gets here i'm sure he'll comment) Personnally I hate the sig's with pic's or a crap load of writting. Maybe we should start asking people to make them smaller? (question obviously towards the other mods) Anyway I agree with whats been said. West do you have a estimation on when the new software will be out?

I don't like this idea. I think its much better to mingle tese topics b/c you get a lot better responses. There are SO many similarities, why seperate. Sure there are differences, but if you put the same basic topics in one spot you will get more, constructive posts.
Also I didn't realize thats how the Rides page was gonna work. Thats a Fabulous Idea to have a whole seperate page.
I think the reviews page being a forum is a good idea b/c you will get more subjective reviews about more items. More stuff to read and base a decision off of.
<all opinion.. no offense inteneded>
yes the mebers rides page would be really nice.. plus i like the idea of having more forums, however i don't like the ideas of our mods becoming nazi's i like how our mods are.. they do their job perfectly.. but we do need to sometimes post off the topic posts, i just know there is going to be a forum that is more popular, and people will post whatever they wan there. face it the chat forum is the most popular here, so whenever someone is sellign something or wanna say something to everyone they post it there, b/c they want to increase their responces.. i do it too, but it's wrong.. hopefull with the new forums that'll stop. whens this all gonna take place?.. how long will zilvia be down, ?

I agree with alot of whats said above.. I think there definitely should be a place for members to show there rides... maybe seperate from the forum.. There should also be a section for off topic chat since we seem to do go 'off topic' alot.. hehe-- anyways... no nazi mods either would be nice.. ok--

The only thing i disagree on is if someone brings up something like music, t.v., something like that here n there. Just gives u a sense of what kind of ppl we r, n there's nothing wrong w/ that, it's not like it's totally out of control. Everybody still stays on topic most of the time. Also disagree w/ the posting for posts deal. I post quite often I guess, but I could care less 'bout the number and trying to have a bunch of posts. Actually wish I had less so I wouldn't seem like such a dork!
BTW, I can't wait for West to read this either s13grl, or should i just say Bitch...........................Queen of Zilvia.net.
Oh yeah, I think the Zilvia scheme should stay similar, not too much of a change or whatever, it just wouldn't feel right if it was completely different.

man, how did I miss this post earlier? Anyway, the rides section is very near completion. It's down to the editing areas now. It's not actually part of the new forum software, I've coded it from scratch. Anyway, a bit more error checking, and it should be ready to take a test drive on the site, though i'm guessing it won't be perfect till it's been up for a little while and people have had a chance to try to break it

02-27-2002, 12:14 AM
As far as the forums go, I like the way they are now. Tech talk seems to be covering everything regarding performance and looks OK. I am 100% opposed to splitting into s13 and s14 boards. They're all the 240sx's and should be treated as such. I wouldn't be opposed to creating a bullshitting board (or, we could just cut a fair deal of the bullshit, you know who you are. . . ). An archive board wouldn't be bad (locked topics, otherwise what's the point of archiving the best?). Though, forums with too many boards become annoying as ####. If it's possible (either by implimentation or preference), simply having twice as many topics show up per page would aleviate much of the clicking between pages. Reviews don't need a forum. Mark (and myself) have offered to compiles reviews by email and get them on the web. Just start writin' and sending them to Mark
Most of the issues we are having can and should be resolved by the members themselves.
Sigs: I'm sure everybody knows when a sig is too big. It should be a small picture, some short text and that's it. I won't bitch n moan too much untill we get the Rides section up and running for people to stick that shit there :-) If your sig seems to be larger than everybody elses, just shrink it. Same thing with avatars. It's pretty annoying to open a topic and find the text squished to half the screen because somebody wants a 400x400 pixel image of their favorite car/pet/pornstar in their avatar. A guideline should be set on how many pixels wide an avatar should be, so it doesn't interfere with the text of a post. Some of the pics are getting out of line.
Post whoring and such BS: Uh, yeah, stoppit and it won't be a problem anymore.
I've never been a fan of enforcing rules where they aren't needed. Show a little restraint and half of the issues Hippo mentioned won't exist. The new software will hopefully take care of the rest. IMHO, things are pretty #### great as they are :-)

Wow - glad to see I was at least close to the mark on some of this stuff
I really like the idea of a rides section that could be accessed w/ a click in either the signature or top bar. That way we could show off w/o clogging/annoying. If misnomer is right and the reviews section will be good to go soon (a la 240sx.org, I presume) that would be awesome and better than a separate board. Unfortunately, I've sent reviews but have yet to see them...
I still think OT Chat is needed (this thread has proven why ). The bottom line is that some people come here to socialize and not for cars - others just for the cars - and others for a blend. I hate to keep using you as an example tofu, but I have no idea if you even own a 240 (b/c I never hear you talk about it) and you have a fair number of posts. Personally, I like a blend - if I wanted to be on a car-only board, I'd spend more time at FA... but I do like that the focus is or should be cars. Other community building stuff - like music, programming, jokes, etc. would be equally accessable and those who were interested would certainly go there... it has a place, it's just that there becomes so much of it that the other more relevant posts get dilluted.
As for Nazi mods - unless people police themselves. I agree it hasn't gotten too out of hand so far, but it's a lot different than it was.
I also agree that there should not be a split b/n s13 and s14. Virtually the same engine and accessories, same characteristics, etc. We just have too much in common to warrant this. Besides some of us already have or are planning on getting one of each - so we need to see it all

And if you want an example of a board with a lot of great features (disregard content completely it has nothing of interest unless you like little kids yelling at each other or anime) but otakuforums.com has a lot of great features, and it is run and programmed by a single 13 year old kid. If we could get our borad running that fast, and with that many options... that would be cool. (No, we don't need all the features, but some of the creature comforts would be nice, and I would love to help)

As for Avatars and Signature Images. I will have restrictions on the limit of the size of a signature or avatar can be so you wont have any HUGE signatures and avatars appearing out of nowhere. I will also add on emotions and addons so the forum will be more customized.
The Profile section will be done either by trancient or by boostaholic, Josh (Boostaholic) will be developing alot of the site when we work on the redesign. So expect this site to be EXTREEEEMLY badass. On a side note, Josh just got a DOHC Hatchback! LOL!
I should be able to enable SNMP mail for the server so it can send out emails to members who request it.
Oh, and for anyone who is still listening to my ass and wants to help the forum. The only problem is that I cant get the latest DB_File installed through PPM so the database wont convert the members or topics. So if anyone can help drop me an email or hit me up on AIM or MSN Messenger.
