i have a clicking/squeeling noise that sounds like it is coming from my waterpump. i am just finishing my swap i was going to drive to california from washington which is 1200 miles. i was wondering if the car will make it and then will chabge it when i get down their. i have a new radiator and a 14 inch electric fan so i think it should stay cool. Just wondering what you guys thought?

how long have you had the motor? how many miles have you put on it with the pump sounding like this? if you just got it and it sounds like this, i would replace it BEFORE the trip. but if you've been driving it for a year, don't worry.

then i wouldn't recommend taking that chance. if you know it's the water pump, take the pump out and inspect it for damage. are the fins broken? does it spin easily? does it have excessive play?

It's not uncommon for an sr (espically red top) to come with a bad water pump.
So, drian all the coolant, remove the fan and shroud and all the belts, and then remove the water pump. It will have liquid gasket, so you may want to scrap the edges of it with a scraper, so it'll come out easier.

Inspect the pump for rust or corroded vanes on the assembly, check to see how free it spinds and how much free play it has.

The water pump uses centrifugal force to send fluid to the outside while it spins, causing fluid to be drawn from the center continuously. The inlet to the pump is located near the center so that fluid returning from the radiator hits the pump vanes. The pump vanes fling the fluid to the outside of the pump, where it can enter the engine.

The fluid leaving the pump flows first through the engine block and cylinder head, then radiator and back to the pump.
