First..I searched. Couldn't find anything in specific.
Ok so basicly I have a Silvia chassis that I purchased with a SR20det.
Now...I was told that the engine was a S13 Blacktop from a 98 ( 98 what, I have no clue) when I purchased the vehicle. But some things are throwing me off as to why it may not be a black top.
according to my reseach a 98 blacktop is A Type X from a 180sx?
My SR Has:
Blacktop vavle cover.
No slope in rear of head.
Has Fins on front...
ECU Reads the #62 was pretty sure a #62 was for REDTOP? Shouldn't I have a J4-J5....?
Also,my AC went out...So I figured out the the Compressor was shot. I checked the part number for the compressor and the part number is for a REDTOP SR compressor...
So question is.. do you think I have a Redtop or a Blacktop? to my knowledge if it has fins it's a blacktop? But how does a Redtop compressor fit on it? dont they have different bolt patterns? and the ECU?
I'm confused...HELP!:aw:

The correct ECU for a 98 Blacktop out of a Type X 180sx is a J4.....I only know this because that's whay I have haha.
I can actually sell you my old J4 ECU if you want it....it works perfectly well....only am not using it because I ahve a full standalone Power FC now.
Let me know if you are interested.....I also thought 62 was redtop ECU.

Thing is the engine ahs been in the SIlvia for some time now..years.
I'm just now noticing the ECU was a 62..COuld it have been modded and mapped for my SR with a Emanage? or FC? Or flashed? Just weird because the car has been running with a T28 DBB and this ECU for a while with no problems..Reason why I was looking at the ECU is because I upgrade the turbo to a top mount .56 Trim Turbonetics Turbo....And need to tune it...But now I don't even know what I'm tuning on..

you have a redtop! only s14 motor has a slope in the rear of the head! doesnt matter if you upgrade the turbo it will still run fine to a certain extent lol(dont want to get into that). only way to find out if your ecu is modded is if you open up the ecu and look to see if there is an actual chip in it. someone can correct me on this. its only coming right from the top of my head right now. someone can double check if they like :D
E5 is from a 94-96 180sx black top 5 speed
E6 is from a 94-96 180sx blacktop automatic
WC is from a 94-98 S14 Silvia
62 is from a 91-93 180sx or S13 Silvia 5 speed
61,63 is from a 91-93 180sx or S13 Silvia automatic
J4 is from a 97-98 180sx Type X 5speed

Could it simply have been a swapped out valve cover since all the parts are red top specific?

That's what Im thinking...But I thought that only blacktops had fins? Or is there a certain Kouki SR( year?) that has Fins on the front as well? so basicly..wtf parts am I buying? cause I just purchased a New O2 sensor for my engine thinking it was a 98 Blacktop...even tho the fat type fits the Bung hole in the aftermarket downpipe..should the O2 read the same? should be fine?

some redtops have fins too S13 Red Top Vs. S13 Black Top - The differences : SR20DET Forum (rear-drive) (http://forums.nicoclub.com/s13-red-top-vs-s13-black-top-the-differences-t59346.html)

no only the s13 Black top has the fins on the front of the head.
There is a slight difference in the Black top and the Red top internal wise.
yes you can swap the valve covers but its stupid.
The ECU is not the same pin out as the Black top but you can rewire it from the ECU pigtail if you know exactly what you are doing if you don't i strongly suggest you dont or you will fry the ECU or start a fire.

Look at the intake manifold. Biggest visual difference. Check your fuse for your a/c

Manifolds a Greddy Intake plenum.

ive had 2 redtops. both of them had fins on the front. they are just the later models. blacktops also have fins. you just have a redtop with a blacktop valve cover it sounds like.

even if its a redtop it still has the same power output stock and can be built the same. next time before you buy a blacktop s13 simply just check the ecu and that will tell all.

so then my O2sensor should work ok?

no your wrong! redtops do have fins. how is it stupid to swap valve covers? some people dont want cops to harass them and or some already come like that from japan. brailauto, most likely you have a redtop and not a black top!

as state before Red Tops have them as well,
There are NO internal differance between the S13 Black top and Red Top EXCEPT for the Kouki S13 "Type X" which has slightly more aggressive cams
You can run a RT harness/ECU on a BT Engine (S13), all the sensors are the same except for the O2 Sensor (But not sure on the MAFS)
You just wire it accordingly, I would think that most ppl would use a RT harness due to the abundance of harnesses and ECU's.
You probably have a Chuki SR, I had a few friends with Chuki S13's with 62 ECU's
Take your car to an A/C shop and have them check out your system and pin point the problem before you throw away money

^^^Damn, i never knew type x had more aggressive cams!!! Do you know the lift difference between type-x and a regulary redtop/blacktop???
Is it the same lift as the n/a sr20's??? I saw a comparisson chart here not too long ago that showed the n/a's had a slightly higher lift.

Cops?!?! LOL...cops dont give a fuck what engine you have out here. Shit, you can swap an SR20DET into an NA and nobody would give a flying fuck, not even the JCI inspectors.
Anyways, everything is pretty much interchangeable between Redtops and Non-type X blacktops. You can have a redtop harness, blacktop ECU (not J4) on a blacktop engine and itll work. Only thing thats really different is the J4 Type X since there are slight difference in the wiring pinouts.
Sounds like you got a frankenstein'd setup. You said you still have a T-25 turbo correct? What turbo elbow/o2 sensor do you have? Blacktops use the fat o2 sensors while the redtops use the skinnies.

Thanks for the help...Basicly when I got the car it had an upgraded T28 DBB turbo from an S15...Don't have the original downpipe and o2. Car was sitting without o2 and turbo..I put a topmount on it with a T3 .56 trim turbonetics top mount setup...The bunghole was for a fat type on the downpip so that is what I purchased...
