s14 climate control lights aren't working

i bought my 95 240 last week.  the lights for the buttons (defrost, floor, vent, etc) aren't working.  the green (LED?) comes on whenever it is pushed, but the symbols aren't lit.  are they supposed to be?  my girlfriends altima has similar buttons, and they are lit.  HELP!

i think just the led lights up never paid that much attention

iirc, i think it's supposed to be just the green light for the functions n then red/orange for the defroster. i guess i've never really paid attention. maybe the coo' stick figure ppl light up too. i'm gonna try n remember n check this out tomorrow even if someone already answers it.
