View Full Version : The History of Drifting

Drifting gives me a lot of inspiration and to pay tribute Im just going to tell a brief synopsis of how it came to be then you can add on using vids pics or just write about what you know or have researched to get an understanding of why we are doing it, who was famous for technique, and what corporations took interest, succedded in producing some of the best parts.
It started in the 70s when a driver Kunimitsu Takahashi who in his racing career was known best for going over the limit in the apex of the turns resorting to the rear of the car breaking loose and smoking the tires but still maintaining a high exit speed and learned to controll it well, actually winning many 50+ grip events in a row. His style introduced many fans to the sport, one of them being Keiichi Tsuchiya.
Kunimitsu Takahashi's car

Keiichi Tsuchiya was dedicated to mastering the art of drifting and was the skill he practiced most doing it in the mountians later to become known as "Touge" which was mostly done by street racers but Keiichi didnt just race in the mountians he started connecting his turns eventually breaking traction for the most part of his runs, quickly making a reputation for himself.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c186/beezon/keiichi-tsuchiya.jpg
As popularity rose and Tsuchiya was turning drifting into a sport of its own. In 1987 driving a GTV AE86, a couple garages and small time magazine companys shot the first true footage how the new sport of drifting was taking shape. The video was popularly known as pluspy. in 1988 Tsuchiya and now founder of Option magazine Daijiro Inada formed the first ever drift event called D1 Grand Prix which inspired the pro drivers in Japan today.
Pluspy Part I YouTube - Keiichi Tsuchiya - Pluspy (part 1) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVyxHVhNNgY)
Pluspy Part II YouTube - Keiichi Tsuchiya - Pluspy (part 2) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHOkR8vrP94)
Drifting had some small events but starting from the late 90's but when D1 Grand Prix came to Irwindale Speedway, CA on August 31 of 2003 with 9700 people attending, it marked the rise of Drifting in the US. Soon After in 2004 Sema came up Formula Drift which was the start of the US series.
In December of 2005 Vaughn Gittin JR became the First American to win an event against the Japanese. In my opinion caused the drift scene to explode.

When I was a Junior in HS I did my Semester Research project on the history of drifting. People don't' realize that drifting has it's own rich and distinct history.
Personally, I think the History of Drifting on the East Coast is way under documented. I know organized events in the East Coast go back as early as 2000 I believe, if not around there. Maybe one day when I get the time I'll try to document some of it.

Yea Its up there... I said that there were events in the late 90's but the one that put US drifting on the map was irwindale....

post it up brother... you guys didnt read... I want you guys to post up some important parts of drifting history aswell I just started with the basics
but if we write what WE THINK change drift history wouldnt that be us changing its actual meaning.for example im not saying this is what really happened just an eaxmple."drifting took off even more when people finished watching tokyo drift".i just made it up cuz you said WHAt We THINK changed drift history.an thats false info, or maybe cuz i did see some people trying to drift after the movie lol

Well Read the whole post and it says to provide a source... and if you post a video of an event that was important then there you go.. I guess I didnt get the point across...
but if you look at your statement I guarantee there were people that wanted to go drift after they saw that so it wasnt false info, it could be how you interpert it also, like I say drifting really took off after JR won, however it could have taken off because of the first event at irwindale that set things off... they both have significance and changed drifting. It doesnt have to be in a time line, just an event that YOU think changed drifting or if its was a known history fact put a source backing your statement up.
I wasnt trying to make this difficult Ill post up something small that inspired me. It could be anything tho, like when BN sports came out with their blister line it gave a whole new meaning to wide body.

D1GP 2003 at Irwindale.
I was there, fresh out of high school. It was ecstatic.
I have a lot of pictures, but haven't seen them for like 9 years, so maybe next time I go to my home I'll find them and upload them.
Me and my group were excited as hell, it was the first time we would see professional drifting up close, less than 150 feet from the cars.
First time we smelled burnt tires.
First time we got to hear loud assed exhausts go WOT non stop without worry.
I waited forever to go to it.
After the show was over and everybody went to their cars it was hilarious.
Everybody started revving the shit out of their cars in the parking lot.
I even saw some dumbass in a yellow ITR rev his shit till it bounced off the rev limiter, and hold it there for a couple seconds each time.
What was even more funny was that there was a gang load of cops posted at the exits and along the street of the entrance and all around the area in general.
We saw a bunch of a dumbasses speed off and get pulled over and have their hoods popped not even a half mile away.
It was funny. It reminded me of the time when Fast and Furious Tokyo drift came out, and me and my friends saw it opening weekend. Came out, my friend was like "Let's go to the mountains.." (not to drift, but grip like we used to)..
we decided not to.
And then guess what, lol, we found out the next day that there was a raid on the mountain we didn't go that night.
Anyways, those were more foolish days. Pics hopefully soon of D1GP 2003.

i remeber buying the issue of modified magazine in 2005 after irwindale, i cut out the pics of the cars and placed them on my room.(still there today) This was when Top secret was competing with the Top Secret s15, Team ORC's 350z, RSR S2000, Kazama in his s15, Orido and the RSR supra. Too bad i was 17 at the time, i finally got my 240 last year after searching for a long time . I like how people watched the movie tokyo drift then everyone is a drifter, that movie just fucked things up for the people who actually had been into it, all of a sudden u see poser ass ppl fronting like they know shit cause they drive a rear wheel drive car hahahaha. Now ppl went from drifting to gay ass time attack, im glad they moved to time attack. Then i hear people say "Drifting is dead" it ain't dead bitch, there is still alot of people that continue to do it because its where it hass been , where its at and where it will be. Heres some random pics i have. The good ol' days ^^

I was in yokota when society mike had his s13 silvia and wadded in his first apperance on grip drift on a snowy road hitting a cement pilon ruining his pass side rear quarter, that was Mike and Chris conley in the parts off shop dickin around, then ended up with his s14 after that, Robbie Noshida got me my first actual drift car over there. it was a metallic grey r32 Gtst with a GTR body kit and some weds wheels, the 5 spoke fake carbon with an annodized red lip with some decent coilovers.... he was tryn to get me to buy an R31 with like 800ps but I hadnt had any driving experiance at the time.. lol,, wish I would have now. I used to go up to Okutama with mike and chris but that was when I first started.
lol that video was when yokota was cool and we were able to drift in the High School parking lot. The Japanese used to bring their cars once a month to drift with us for " international relations " purposes.. any way it was bad ass,,, I miss those times, those videos were before in like 03

Funny you mention that. In HS, I remember hitting my friend up every time he went to Japan for Christmas to bring me back ANY JDM car mags he could get his hands on...
And I do remember waiting around for second stage...And I was bummed when it was announced that third stage was just a movie.
I have to dig around for some old pictures but I remember seeing the Signal auto do a demo a LONG time ago (I believe it was there first time in Toronto and second time being in Canada) and I got a picture taken of me and Chunky Bai in front of his car... Good times :)
