To LoJack or not to LoJack? [Archive] - bimmerfest - BMW Forums (http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-27776.html)
Found this thread on a bmw forum. Consensus there is if there cars are stolen they don't want them back so no lojack. Which is great for them but I stand to lose alot of money if insurance only pays me replacement value on my car. What does everyone think about lojack. From what I'm reading cost of lojack install is maybe cost of used coilovers.

240s are so easy to steal and with modifications it would make sense to have as
may theft deterrents as possible
but for the average 240 kid who whines about $400 wheels, $200 body kits and $600
coilovers being too expensive I just don't see this happening
so many 240s getting parked on the street, with liability insurance only and not even an alarm...

Locked?
I just see a rash of stolen 240 threads and wanted some members to shoot around ideas. I don't know about anyone else but the liability policy I had didn't include any theft coverage. So had my car been stolen before my insurance upgrade I would have $0 an dlittle chance of recovery by the crack detectives here in northern illinois.

Lojack is good to have as a theft deterrant, but go to driveok.com, it's normally a gps thing to track kids on where they r going but can be used as low Jack type without having to pay as much, but u do gotta remember that if somebody wants your car they are gonna get it, low Jack is easy to bypass, put the car in a metal crate on a semi, signal goes nowhere...

well, here in nowhere, IN not many people steal cars....so i can just leave mine unlocked in my driveway with the windows rolled down and not worry about it....but in California, where everyone and their uncle's 240 is getting stolen, it may be good to have.

well a buddy of mine was selling his Honda Si hatch at his house in Mira Loma. it needed a new tranny and motor so they put it up for sale in front of their house. a few days later it get stolen.
They had Lo Jack installed and had it tracked down. the cops found it in Lake elsinore (35 miles away) at some body shop.
luckily the thieves put a new motor and tranny at no cost to them and of course my friends family just ended up keeping it.
My car got broken into in a nice ass neighborhood i wasnt planning on staying long, but they were nice enough not to make a mess in the car even the passenger window was layed out all nice next to the sidewalk (had tint so it held up together when they shattered it) , but for some reason they ended up taking my wheel and fucked my ignition cylinder. my guess is that they couldn't start my car due to my kill switches.
but just to let you know any and every little theft deterrent counts, it just depends on how much you care about your car

Lojack advertises that they can transmit through metal storage crates and garage walls. In the link I listed there were references to cars being found in shipping containers in various ports via lojack signals. Can anybody confirm or deny signal strength?

Only problem with ignition kill switchs and that sort of theft deterrent is that most of these cars stolen aren't started and driven away. They just push/pull/drag/tow/trailer them away in the night.

i have actually thought about that too...it definitely wont stop them but itll prolly agrivate them and ull proly hear your tires screaching-a brake line lock like some people use to do a burnout they jus hit a button to lock the front brakes well wat about one to lock all 4 and more or less hidden

That would work unless they use a flatbed.

The only real way to get someone not to take your car will be installing a boot before u go in for the night.

My major problem with lojack is that it has to be dealer installed. After completely redoing my alarm system. I am not trusting anyone with electrical work in my car. Especially security related.

Wrong it does not need to be dealer installed. I have it on my car I bought the Proximity Plus and it came via UPS and I installed it in my car. The Proximity Plus enables you to move it from car to car. I would recommend it to anyone that has a built 240 or any car that is targeted by thieves. I paid less then $400 for a 1 year contract and the unit itself. Once my 1 year is up I can pay by month or do another year.
LoJack is the shit. I have something that’s like it on my cell phone called mobile defense and it dose the same thing I can locate my phone with its built in GPS using my computer. I also have the option to clear the phone of its data and contacts and make it go off like a car alarm.

ProximityPlus™, LoJack’s first portable GPS tracking device enables you to quickly and easily pinpoint your vehicle’s location and monitor the driver’s speed- all from the convenience of your computer.
ProximityPlus™ will even send you e-mail or text alerts if your vehicle travels too fast or leaves a predetermined route.
Get peace of mind with:
New drivers: Monitor the speed and route your teenager drives during her commute to school or other activities.
Long-distance drivers: Make sure you know where your loved one is on long trips away from home.
Older drivers: Never worry again about elderly parents getting lost.
Employees: Monitor the routes and locations of your business vehicles.
And unlike other GPS products, the ProximityPlus™ unit is small, portable and light—enabling you to move it from vehicle to vehicle, so you can always look out for the ones you love

Are you guys aware that lo jack has a "guarantee +5000" deal? that means if they dont find your car in X amount of days, you get 5000$ cash. yes this is true, my co-worker/friend had his yamaha R1 stolen, never recovered, and he got $5000 from Lo jack.
now that in mind, if you put lo jack on a 1000$ car that got stolen, would you get 5000$ back? I dont know..
just throwing that out there, if you decide to call em up. ask about their "guarantee +5000" deal.

LoJack Car Security System for Stolen Vehicle Recovery (http://www.lojack.com/Proximity/Pages/proximity-why.aspx)
That's not "LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery System" or "LoJack Early Warning Recovery System" it's their GPS tracker. It's not designed for theft recovery. It's designed for keeping track of the kids or grandma driving around.

From what I've heard, it's the guys that install the Lojack that steal the cars because A) They have your address from the invoice B) They know where the unit is because they are the ones who installed it.

I like the idea of some of these 'pay as you go' phones being used in conjunction with GPS tracking..much cheaper than lo jack and supported everywhere.
LoJack is a shot in the dark. Its sort of pricey, but does its job. The only problem is... will you need it or not. A lot of the time people get lojack but never use it. If you garage your car daily, its not necessary, but if you park on the street, I would definitely grab a LoJack system.
