Any one have any good lathe work to post up? I just completed my intro to machining, working on purchasing a lathe, and would like to see some parts that were machined using a lathe if any out there. Id like to turn some steering extensions for the s14 or something of the sort.
Thanks in advance.
I made the first few sets of rear upright spherical bearings on my lathe. Made my shift knob, some delrin RLCA bushings, made spacers for my FLCA roll center adjusters, 2024-T351 misalignment bushings for my toe rods when I went to an S14 rear subframe, S14 rear diff mounting bushings out of aluminum, turned down stock seatbelt bolts to mount my lower harness belts, I'm sure there's more, but I've gotten pretty good use out of the little sucker.

I took intro and advance manual machining in college. Best courses ever. I made an aluminum shift knob for my 240 while we had a substitute. Final project was a meat mallet, with tapered handle, knurled grip, and your own custom head. I used some paint and spifted it up before class, got A+ in it.
You can find a used lathe on craigslist. Start with a mini lathe from harbor freight, they are $300-500 bucks.

man i wish i made a shift knob or something useful.
i made this enormous nut and bolt the size of my fore arm which is kinda cool. also made 4 card holders. its a good convo starter with customers they think its neat for some reason.
get your hands on a plasma cutter and learn auto cad thats where its at dude

Just made a disk brake adapter for my mountain bike...super simple, but cool.
I just have a Chinese mini-lathe like HF sells(but from a different place that offers more extras for about the same price). Space was tight, and it easily fits on one corner of my work bench. Works for about 90% of the stuff I'd like to make.
If you can get a used Bridgeport that'd be pretty awesome, but I think you're looking at more than $500.
I wouldn't mind upgrading to a Chinese 9x20 lathe(mine is a 7x14), but some things the 7x14 still does better. I haven't really tweaked mine much, and it's only out about 0.002" over ~6-7" when turning something down, which I could fix if I spent some time on it, but it works for the stuff I make.

PICS>>> :) I really posted this to see some lathe work others did. I will post up what I did in class, I know its not an actual car part but shows what can be done... its not the best either but it was my first project. downloading pics now

Yea man I know you can make those things very accurate. I know just going from a 3 jaw chuck to a 4 makes a big difference in accuracy, Im really just shopping around cause I dont want to buy one then see another that I like and regret it. but HF is sounding like a good idea... Thnx bro
Any pics of work? :)

I made dies to push out my tension rod and other bushings with a 8 ton floor jack in a welded square frame.
Saved myself a ton of money putting my energy suspension bushings.

Ok, my problem was I have an old hub and got a newer frame that was not compatible with my disk set up. Answer make an adapter. Like so...

It is very simple and would have cost me less in time to just go buy a new hub, but I am kinda stubborn that way...lol

Nice yes it pays to be mechanically inclined and knowing how to work with metal.

Lol I don't have any pics of my work but I'm an engineer at Ingersoll cutting tools so if you need some tooling when you get your lathe hit me up.

Any 3/8" square or smaller tools for a "real good price?" :bite:

We make just about any indexable tool you can imagine and have now moved into some solid carbide ventures. Ingersoll is pretty much the one stop shop for tooling.

Yes^^ thats awesome that a fellow fabricator would provide assistance like that.
thanks man I will be intouch soon.

How about some "product samples?" :wavey:

lol believe me if there were any good "product samples" i'd be first in line. Here's a link to the turning catalog if anyone's interested. Can all be found on our site.

7x10, 7x12, 7x14 Mini-Lathe Versions, Specifications and Pricing (http://www.7xlathes.com/7x-versions-specifications-pricing.htm)
I got the Cummins. Good deal, and I really haven't had any problems with it, even locking it up and throwing the work out of the chuck in some weird stuff that didn't chuck up well. I've thought of getting a 3 jaw 4", or maybe a 4 jaw 4" chuck, but it'd be pretty rare when I'd use that extra size.
I need to get me some more bits, but I've been slacking on it since I don't have many machining projects these days. It's been really helpful to have around though, that's for sure.

^^^ Thank you sir you are my hero^^ Im picking up a lathe here in a week or two. any other parts would be great.
thanks for labeling the part so its easier for people non associated to see what they can do. Perfect example of what I wanted on this thread.

I've made a shift knob and this "quick tap" for my crank vent vacuum. I also made a spacer to extend my driveshaft after swapping to a non ABS diff housing. I love making stuff.

mini-lathe.com home page (http://www.mini-lathe.com/) is a good source of info on mods and maintaining the mini's.
LittleMachineShop.com - tooling, parts, and accessories for bench top machinists (http://littlemachineshop.com/) is a good source for parts.

Here I got another one... Concentric drive line spacer. I needed more slip yoke engagement after swapping from an ABS differential housings to a non-ABS.
