can anyone help me out with this? im buying a welded internal of the stock diff and the guy charges 50$/hour to swap it, i can do this myself if its just loosening bolts and all that... but how exactly would i go about doing it... remove diff and then what?

there's plenty of write-ups on how to do this
but its super easy
remove the cover
remove bearing bolts
knock out output shafts
pry the internals out
remove ring gear
use shims in same order when reassembling
thats the basics of it

simple google search came up with nothing! what if i have the entire core? can i just pull everything out and put the welded in?

there's a write up on nico and zilvia
look in the archives and faqs i think the zilvia one has pictures down
honestly just start pulling it apart and lay everything in order it will be real obvious just make sure the shims go back in the same order
you need an impact for the ring gear bolts since those have loctite on them
took me about 30 minutes the first time

When you put the diff back in the pumpkin you want to make sure the ring and pinion are meshed properly. To make sure it's done right, you need to check the contact patch of the gears and use shims to adjust accordingly. The best place to find this information is the FSM.

- if u take off the differential your self and take it in it should only take about an hour, that's how long it took too put my lsd in

Wow. All these people slapping diffs in without checking backlash and gear pattern. But then again if its just a welded diff, no big deal if it howls like wolfman and wears out bearings faster. I guess I'm just anal about following specs.

no, ring and pinion gears are paired. you need to take the ring gear off of the old diff and put it on the welded one. only then can you drop everything in.

i have swapped numerous diff's and i get the backlash checked every time. it is always spot on which leads me to believe that there really is no need to do it if you are just swapping out the diff itself. if for some reason you got the shims or something mixed up and couldnt remember which way they go back in, then yes, i think it would be necessary to have the backlash checked.

yep i've done it multiple times
the backlash will still be set correctly if you use the same shims in the same order that you took the diff out
problems happen when you're swapping shit over from another diff and end up using different shims together

if the guy charges 50 an hour, i can't imagine it will take longer than 2 hours....soo...
baacklash is not as easy as these guys are making it sound.
just pay the 100 bucks and have peace of mind
OR
if you're up for the learning experience and have the right tools and time, do it yourself.

less than $50 differential = me not giving a shit about how well the backlash is set

GTFO man
if he uses the same exact shims in the same exact spots he will be fine.
but i guess you are right, i have no idea what im talking about.
