bone stock eeverything, 87 octane, old oil,
went to smog
15mph I got 40 hc out of 550 hc limit
25 mph I got 1500 hc out of 550 limit
So I passed half the test..
Why did it fail at 25 mph?? It ran supperr clean at 15..As clean as new cars.
TI have one free retest, and tomarrow is my last day of my temporay permit op. So Il re test tomarrow.
I have changed the oil and filter 10w40 Penzoil
I have seafoamed through the brake booster line while idling
I have checked to see if the egr planeum is moving up and down when the engine revs up. So egr works..
I poured CRC g2p guranted to pass emssions test into my gas tank.
I hope I will pass my smog tomarrow.. ANy tips? why did it pass 15mph and fail the 25??
I hope il pass.. Its my only carr, and i need my tags

good luck with your smog dk! my coupe is not even close!
it failed in every damn category :(
and brody, i think your korean is a little wrong in your sig
just saying :)

Even visual? :tweak:
My S14 failed smog too :-/
I failed HC and NOx by 50ppm or so... Then I found my plugs weren't properly tighten down by the previous owner and along with other various thing.
and the korean part, is this correct?

a good thing to do before smog check is to drive your car for a few miles or 5 to 10 min, before taking it in. i always do this with my car. its what ive heared to do and it hasnt given me a problem yet

Pcv valve could be out so it might be spitting excess oil as you rev the motor to get to the 25mph. or try changing out your plugs. Oh that guaranteed to pass BS doesn't do shit its just alcohol!

check the vacuum like from your EGR to the BPT valve. You'd be surprise how some smogs fail at low speeds because of the dry rotted vacuum lines which could prevent your EGR opening on time.

If your car is 5 speed. Make sure that the technician shifts correctly. The idiot who smogged my car shifted from 15mph to 25mph at like 1900 rpm and it failed due to not enough vacuum opening.
My smog guy shifted late at like 3000rpm and it passed.
Simple as that, he told me some lazy smog guys don't know shit or to lazy to shift and dial down/ drive the car correctly because it's harder to maintain RPM and keep rpm shift matching.
So that was what I know.

damn my driver side axle snapped in half, but i still went to smog it today anyways.
They couldnt do the test because on the dyno the car moves around to much. 1 wheel drive fail....
I need a another axle..fuuuu

my bad:boink:
but on another note,my hatch failed the same way, i put a nifty new ca legal cat on it, i payed like 170 installed (ugh) and warmed it up really well, passed with flying colors..
should have failed visual but the dude was cool..
but yea check all your vacuum lines, maby clean the egr valve, things like that..
oh, and how the hell did you snap a axel!?
good luck!

i didnt think my car would pass. I mean seriously i get shitty mpg, the car smells like crazy and its just not possible. I was wrong because it passed the first time.

i get pretty decent MPG like 27-29mpg on hwy and about 18-22 in the city. But I failed pretty bad in the NOx and HC...

ahh i get nothing near your mpg, i think mines around 14 on the high way and about 10-11 in the city. Pretty much evens out to 12.

Back to the OP:
You didn't mention the timing. I did the timing on my car when the engine was at operating temp. Might be worth checking out again.
Drive the car on the freeway for a bit before heading to the smog shop.
When you get to the smog shop, leave the car running while you go inside and do the paperwork. Just keep an eye on it so that nobody jumps in and takes it.

Try a new oxygen sensor. That should have been first on the list of fixes.
A new cat would be next... after you fix your axle.

Both of my verts pass fine...Legally. My 93 actually runs significantly better then average numbers and mirrors many of the 05 and newer cars I smog for change of ownership at our dealer. I have been doing smog inspections since 1993 so I know a little about smogs.
HC failures are not caused by egr failures so put that idea to rest. You are simply not burning all your fuel under a 25% load. You are under a higher load at 15mph [50%].
It is very unusaual for a car to fail at the 25mph range with good numbers at the 15mph range. This indicates a possible intermitten problem with a sensor or something. If the car passed at 15mph, preconditioning the cat is useless [driving the car before the test]. The car is under a higher load the first part of the test so if it passes there the test itself would precondition the cat for the second half of the run.
I would be very curious to see the rest of your numbers including 02 and CO2. Those 2 help diagnosing smog gas failures.
To address the shifting statements in this thread. The state requires us to keep the car in second gear the entire test unless we can not maintain the rpm and speed windows on the computer. We then may use another gear to obtain it. As I recall you can do both 15 and 25 mph hour in second gear on the 240. at least s13 de setup.
If you repost your numbers include the rpm's too. This will tell me if he shifted during the test.

How much fuel pressure is he running? anything above 41psi (off idle) would def cause his rich condition....Has he checked his SR for codes ,I mean ,theres No way of knowing ,unless he does a LED ECU flash test and veryfies a code 55.A bad knock sensor code 34 would Also make his Sr to run rich.Just sayin......

Because I thought he had N SR and was just seeing what kind of emmissions he was producing compared to the KA emission limits!oh.my bad ,didnt mean to piss you the FFF off, jeeeez.I FN know SRs arent legal !next time Ill remember to read the complete title..... effn excuse me ..
