View Full Version : Today was easily the worst day of my mechanical career.

I got my *** kicked by a 13 year old ball joint.
I swear to god, some Nissan engineer put MAD KrazyGlue on that particular ball joint so that I couldn't get it out. He KNEW i'd need to do it some day, and laid out an evil plan.
I ended up stealing the LCA from my wife's car (the 89) to have a usable ball joint & control arm.
I wasn't even able to change the oil, I was so frustrated.

I didn't do jack to the 89 today.
For those who don't know, the SOHC in her car gave up the ghost (rod knocking due to dented oil pan), so i'm installing a '95 or '96 KA into her car as an OBDI motor. I'm also swapping it from auto to manual. And putting in a new interior. And putting on Q45 brakes.
It's coming along nicely.
I just need to reinstall the lower intake manifold plenum, hookup all the vacuum crap, and slap it back into the chassis. After that's done, all I need to do is wire it and wait for the driveshaft and such to arrive. *cough*MARK!*cough*

Oh.. I should've clarified. I'm attempting to remove the old S13 ball joint from my LCA, and install an S14 ball joint.

Kevin, removing the ball joint is easy.. just use the dual-hammer technique. One hammer hits the LCA up, the other hammer hits the top of the ball joint out of the LCA -- it ALWAYS works. You have to give it a nice POP, it'll work.. trust me.

Anyway, atleast you didnt spin a bearing like a ****ING IDIOT.. man, I am still bummed from that ****up.

ps: The S14 ball joints ONLY fit the S14 front knuckles, I hope you are planning S14SE 5-lug upgrade with a certain caliper upgrade. ;)

Maybe I'll give that a try on Tuesday, Mike..
That does suck about your motor. I can't believe it's just due to a simple over-rev!

and.. earth to Mike.. I've had S14 spindles and Z brakes for well over a year now.. **** maybe 2. I was just lazy (like you were) and ran on S13 ball joints the whole time. I'm just trying to remedy that!
How's your breakfast? :D

After it's all said & done, I'll post pics. I haven't said anything on the matter since, as i haven't worked on any of it.

Hitting around the area helps. Helps frustration and somehow dislodges the stock "krazy glue" effect. :)

luckily for me when i had to take out the ball joint on the LCA(drivers rear actually) the LCA itself was fudged to all hell, so i didn't have to worry about ruining the boot, i just gave it hell, those things are a PITA

To remove a balljoin, you can either :

(1) use a balljoint sepeartor, like a folk shape
OR
(2) cut the balljoint or/and spindle.

I did (1) on the left side and did (2) on the right side.

(2) totally took 5 hours.(did not have good tools)
(1) took 1 minutes.

P.S The balljoint seperator has to be thick, thicker than the gap between the control arm and the splindle.

I hope this help.
