SOHC speedo is different, goes up to 115, but car doesn't :(
I agree with dousan get it lower, but i'm not really a fan of sleepy eyes, unless its the clear corners kit.

Old news... I dont even consider it a mod anymore. I did a write up on how I discovered it on Freshalloy way back when... I just dont think it looks good on stock ridehieght cars, it looks poor

I guess I just don't think it looks good... but each to their own... it looks better than the crap S13 headlight conversions. (Hopefully the one I saw wasn't East Bear) It was awful!

Says who? I topped my SOHC at around 130-135, thats where it ran out of juice. My car was auto, plus it later was converted to manual and I still used the auto ECU (didnt feel like being limited to 110). I use the Japanese 180KPH gauge cluster and converted the signal to read in MPH. I had everything calibrated too.
I would say that a strong SOHC should top off about there. And yes, it took a while as soon as 120 hit. I dont recommend this unless your car is strong, suspension and tires are safe and rated for those speeds. Plus, its super illegal so be sure to try in very deserted areas. Dont be like me and do it on the 405 freeway coming back from San Diego at 4AM. =)

I agree with Mike. I've hit 130+ before, but I was on ****ty tires. I'm lucky nothing happened, but I still regret being stupid enough to do it. At the very least, there was NOBODY on the road where I was driving (which is good and bad. good because you don't endanger anyone else, but bad because you're dead if you crash and nobody finds your car.)

I agree your sleepy eye could go a lil lower, but what the hell, if you like it, go with it. I just rewired my indiglos to the same headlight motor switch, and now I can alternate between a low sleepy eye and a regular setting, and the switch also powers up the indiglos. Since I see the sleepy eye is getting popular though, I'm thinking about switching in clear lamps before that becomes popular too.....

Very funny, Mephisto....I only made that point becuase most people I know seem to want to get as far away as they can from the pop-ups, and around here,(Virginia) people are just starting to learn how to do the sleepy eye, I did mine for the hell of it...but on a serious note, all the sr swaps and silvia front ends have become a bit nauseating...I actually like the pop-ups look on the 240, that's why I'm looking at switching in clear lamps so I can keep the pop-ups look and feel without going to the silvia front...

what the hell are clear lamps?
east bear?
are your popups yellow or orange or something?
or you mean the turn signal?
or daytime running lights?!
wtf..

06-30-2003, 10:47 AM
Sorry Dousan...I'll clear that up for you...
The clear lamps that I've been talking about are fixed headlamps in the shape of your closed pop-ups, that sit in the same spot. Veilside use to sell a kit for the fastback a while back that included them, but they no longer have it. I have a connection with a buddy in Japan that has offered to source me a pair. There are some shops over there who made them custom for people looking to modify their 180's.

06-30-2003, 10:50 AM
ok all headlamps are clear, so you shouldnt say that 'clear headlamps'
meh...yeah those are ok. depends on the brand. yeah i've seen them on many different cars.
nothing spectacular

06-30-2003, 10:59 AM
Damn you're unenthusiasic Dousan, are you this critical of all mods? :)
Guess that's just you're way of saying "I didn't understand what you were talking about Black Lion, thank you for sharing...."
The reason I called them clear lamps was because I feared, some one like yourself, wouldn't have the slightest clue what I was talking about. If I had just said I was switching to headlamps....people would be asking "doesn't your car already have headlamps?". So to avoid that I said clear headlamps. As for it being something spectacular, I personally don't give a damn what anyone else thinks of how I looks, I'M going to do it, because I like the way it'll look on MY car. If someone doesn't like it or has a problem with it, they can feel free to avoid doing it to THEIR 240....Thanks for the opinion though.....

I don't really care what it was about Mephisto, I didn't say I was doing something new, just something I didn't see alot of. Maybe you have seen a lot of that kind of mod, and you could be personally sick of it...To each his own...My response to Dousan was to say that I didn't ask for approval on the mod, just said I was doing it, and again thank you both for your OPINION
Dousan_PG
06-30-2003, 11:12 AM
i wasnt giving you approval
i was saying what i thought after telling you not to call it clear headlights
i put up my flip ups..hey look, my headlights are clear too!!
flush lights or something is better.
The reason I called them clear lamps was because I feared, some one like yourself, wouldn't have the slightest clue what I was talking about.
wtf does this mean? yeah no clue because your are referring to them as CLEAR. my HELLA h4s are clear too!!!!
damn you take everything too personal. RELAX!
its nothign original or new. maybe over in VA.
those headlights are easy to get. just takes a little leg work. my friend just offered me some over in japan a few months ago. they arent horribly expensive. but i dont like how they look
you do what you want to your car
with all your neon and such, should go nicely. good luck with your project!!

Wow. Untwist your panties, man. Nobody's flaming you here. Just because somebody doesn't like what you're doing to your car, you take offense? If that's the case, an internet car forum is NOT the place for you. Nobody will have any reservations in telling you their true heartfelt opinions, whether or not they hurt your feelings. Dousan36 tends to be a little harsh simply because hearing the same broken record a few hundred times gets OLD. However, he DOES provide great information, and you could learn alot from him. Besides, he never told you that it was a bad idea or that you were stupid for doing it or shouldn't do it.
Get over yourself, and do what YOU like to your car, not what others like.
Tachknight_BlackLion
06-30-2003, 11:31 AM
Nothing personal...thought I made that clear...Dousan gave an opinion, I simply thanked him for an opinion...He also didn't understand why I called the headlamps clear lamps so I explained the reason why I called them that...hope that settles everything....Again, in my opinion they've been done before, but they look nice, and no one in my area has them so I have no problem putting them on my car. In your opinion, this is nothing special, which is cool with me, I just said I didn't ask and ultimately it doesn'y affect my decision.
The comment was not up for discussion otherwise I would have started my own thread.
BTW, the word Newbie means new to this website, not "child", or "240sx virgin". Dousan may know plenty, and when I'm ready to learn something from him, I'll start a thread and ask.
Hope this clears everything up, guys. I'm going to another thread now....
Thanks for your opinions and time,
BlackLion :)

Is that so? I thought our cars had a govenor at 112. Or is that only the DOHC.
Here I am sooner or later going to check the top speed on my car but wasn't expectin 130. I'll prolly wimp out at 120 anyway.
At 4AM on my highways there are enough gaps inbetween the traffic to go from like 70-115 (at least in my camry).
I was about to go and start clipping wires and removing the 5th gear sensor (or did you guys already do this?)
Sorry to swerve off topic again, but umm more opinions. Sleepy eyes are ugly unless they are really low, and I prefer them on cars with body kits. The fixed headlight thing I never really liked on any S13. I like the ones that are on most FDs (the one that bulges a little). But prefer pop ups.

I just finished doing the sleepyeye mod...easier than I thought. Now I just gotta figure out how to get my switch to light up (it's a two-position 3-prong, supposedly lighted).
You do have to remove the bottom panel in order to run the wire (depending on where you place the switch). Just one word of advice: do NOT unscrew the hood release latch! It's a B!TCH to get back on!
For those of you who don't like clicking on several links just to get to a simple how-to, here ya go:
First, what you'll need:
- two straight connectors (I used crimp-type, for 22-18 gauge wire)
- one two-position switch (two prong usually)
- depending on where you want to mount your switch, anywhere from 5" to +6' of wire (18 gauge will do fine)
- electrical tape
* you don't need, but it'll be much easier if you have scissors, a wire stripper, and a few zip-ties.
How-to:
1. Decide where you want to mount your switch. Get the appropriate amount of wire for that position (remember, get two pieces).
2 Remove the headlight push-push button by simply pulling it straight out. If it won't come out, use a knife or something and try pushing in the two prongs on top and botton of the switch while pulling it out.
3. Cut the solid green wire going to the headlight button, and strip both ends about 3/8". Put a connector on each end and crimp that part of the connector. If you want, you can go ahead and put some electrical tape to hold the wire better to the connectors, but hope you won't have to take it off again.
4. Strip both ends of the two pieces of extra wire (again, about 3/8") and mount(?) them to the connectors. You can tape them now if you want. If not, do it before you replace the button.
5. Remove the panel underneath the steering wheel so you can route your wires.
6. Push the extra wire through the button hole, and pull it through. Be sure you have enough slack to easily connect the wires to the switch and mount the switch , and that you've put electrical tape on all connections so far, before you push the button back in place.
7. Run your wire to where you want to mount your switch, and if the switch require drilling a hole, now's the time. Connect and tape the wires to the switch, and test it to make sure you did everything right. With the switch ON, push the headlight button to make sure they go up, then push it again so they go down. Now push the button again, and then after you push it a fourth time while the headlights are closing, turn the switch OFF. Both headlight should stop dead in their tracks. If not, you did something wrong and should go check over everything. To get the light to go all the way down again, simply turn the switch ON.
8. If everything checks out, replace the button, mount your switch and replace the panel you removed earlier.
9. Have fun! Just play around with it until you get the height you like best.

My 90 sohc w/ exhaust and intake hit 120 at 6k in 5th gear. I didn't really feel like running it into redline seeing how old it is(126k). It's definitely not governed to answer that.

Bad KiDyNomiTe, BAD :hammer:  ;)
Actually, the speedo is pretty inaccurate at that speed. Usually 5-10mph on the high side. 112mph is about 4900 rpm in 5th.
Of course sometimes the tachs are wrong too..

LOL well it started out as me checking to see when the sunroof started to whistle, then umm... I guess I was checking if it stopped :D
Well it didn't, but it starts around 80, and its not really that loud, didnt notice until I was going 100 and there was a breif silence in my music :D
Well my speedo is wrong about half the time, cuz it says I am going 0 when I am going more liek 50, lol mines kinda messed up, should be getting a replacement at the meet ;) . You said you were installing digi guages in yours right? Did you install the HUD?
DuffMan
07-19-2003, 07:55 PM
Yeah its digi without the hud right now. Someday i will cut a hole for the hud, and mount it straight in the center. Then I'm coverting the area where the digi non-hud speed is to a digital gauge of some sort, maybe oil pressure.
