ok so i took the head off and there was no head gasket... motor ran fine. There was residue there like a gasket had once been there but it wasnt ... how the hell did it seal and run normal? and what would my compression have been, this is really bothering me... had the motor for years with no problems

Are you sure? Are you certain that the residue that you are mentioning is in fact the headgasket?
Pictures would help, agreed.

When I took my OEM one out, it was also stuck to the block/head and had the consistency of oily/pasty/papery/gluey whatever.
Needless to say, spend ALOT of time getting the deck clean before reinstalling a new one.
I used a lot of carb cleaner and the pink-colored scotch brite pads (less-abrasive).
You will go through a shit ton of them (>5).
Razor is useless, you will end up putting scratches in the metal
