What are the downsides to doing this?
By this, I mean cutting out all the supports from underneath the bonnet.

Hood will be flimsy.

You'll make a mess, and have to repaint the underside.

Painting sucks.

Hood pins suck.

it gets really flimsy, and wobbles like crazy on the freeway.

Ah, bummer. I was hoping it would still be sturdy enough.

flimsy as hell... on the highway not that bad but still noticeable that it wobbles... i recommend u do the "honda" hood mod cause since it's so flimsy it tends to bend a bit when u have it open with the "prop" thing that holds it up (sorry i forgot the name of that thing) at least mine did...

yea i did it on my old hood it was a horrible idea. felt extremely flimsy

how much does the hood weigh after you remove all the braces?

guys...i think thats why its called bracing...just saying...

and as everyone said (and im surprised you guys werent surprised when it happend) its flimsy...its obviously not structuraly sound...

just go CF and paint over it if ur looking for that OEM look...

i did this, it's more flimsy, but not all of mine is gone, just where parts of the engine where hitting the hood.

Hood pins are ugly.
I was only thinking about doing it for fun, haha.

i knew it would be flimsy... well when i installed it i didn't notice much difference till i actually opened a uncut one and u can feel a lot of weight difference... not tons but a noticeable diffence... im gonna go FRP soon even if they do fit like crap sometimes... lightweight and not as flimsy...

guys, NO hood is most lightweight.

lay some fiberglass over the oem hood and hood pin that hood

lightest option

your call on the thickness

could you not just cut out the inner most skeleton and leave the out bracing?

seems like the best of both worlds

Well, that is what I meant.
As in remove the inner skeleton, but keep the border bracing intact.
I assumed that is what everyone else was talking about as well. Was it?

That's what I was thinking. Just leave the outside bracing and get rid of the middle sections. I figure that would remove SOME weight.

Matej

The outer border looks tough/welded/actually a part of the hood, while the inner skeleton seems to be attached with some kind of adhesive. On my hood, a lot of it is not even attached to the underside of the hood anymore, as it has come unglued in many places. That is what first gave me the idea.

Now I am curious if the people saying their hood became flimsy removed everything from the underside, or retained the outer border.

soap if you just lay a shit ton of fiberglass on a steel hood its probably gunna weigh more then just a regular fiberglass hood. and it would be totally pointless to take the time to spread all that fiberglass. and on top of all that its a waste of money. just an overall stupid idea homie. i don't mean to shit on your post or anything but how the hell is that supposed to help anything at all and make it lighter? you really wouldn't be loosing much if you cut the suports out and then lay fiberglass... AND if the hood flexes to much considering its steel then all that fiberglass you spread will probably crack. again, waste of time and money.

How much weight would one even save by modifying the hood like this? 4~6lbs?
It kind of seems like a lot of work with out much of a benefit.

Diamond cut hood seems better

ZilviaKid

4-6 pounds maybe, but its free to do, and doesn't make the car any less street-able like removing sound deadening.

Cut it!!!!...I been thinking about it for years..lol
I'm about to hack up my own crappy hood and let you guys know how it goes.

Ruiz, to be super duper honest, I secretly mainly want to do this because I did the 'vertical hood mod,' but the hood is heavy and I am afraid it would put too much stress on the the threads where the hinges bolt into the car. So any weight lost would make me feel a bit better about it.

I see, I understand now. Please do cut away.

In what way did you modify your hood/hinges?
I searched the internet for 'vertical hood mod' and got some, ummmm, rather weird results

Yes, would highly advise against searching for that word combination on the internet, especially in the presence of others.

Here is my previous thread on the subject:

^I get the whole "vertical hood mod" thing, but at the same time... It takes less than 3 minutes to remove a hood, by yourself... What's the big deal?

If you remove the skeleton, but still want some structural rigidity, you could PROBABLY get some thin aluminum flat-stock and use panel bond or something to reinforce the underside a bit. It'd save a bit of weight, but wouldn't be so floppy. It's worth a shot.
