I just bought a 5spd 1990 s13 last week. It has at least 181000 miles on it (odo works intermittently). I noticed that I burn gas hella quick. The inside of the muffler was layered in black sooty build up and the exhaust didnt smell right. So I tried leaning it out by adjusting that air intake valve, which is the black box on the side of the throttle body, but not too sure if it did anything... Any advice?

Give it a tune up any time soon?

Aha! THATS the term i was looking for. Well i guess it wasnt leaning it out, per se. More of getting the idle down. It was at 1k. Now its at ~850. And about the tune up, Yes, I am going to do a complete tune up soon. Would that be the problem? Or maybe a leaking or stuck open injector?

bad coolant temp sensors tend to cause a rich problem, also high idle. If you have any hard start problems when the engines warm id put my money on temp sensor. Might check for vacuum leaks as well.

Hmmm..... im leaning more toward vacuum leaks because when the heat is on, the idle stutters and then speeds up randomly... related or no?
