Hello fellow nissan fanatics, I have decided to turn my R14 (GTR-based S14) into a time-attack machine for the big modified tuner shootout race event coming up. it will go back to occasional street car duty afterwards (its too much fun not to drive on the street), but first and foremost I am working hard to make the car competitive for the event. We got 2nd place the last 2 years in heavily modified street subarus and we dont want to give that up. A street subaru wont get us 2nd this year - there will be a UMS's sickass evo 8, a dedicated track porsche 911 twin turbo awd as well as the sierra sierra cosworth evo and tarzan is driving crawford's STI so we have to be on top of our game to do well. We have 10 weeks before the event. The chassis and engine are VERY solid and have plenty of time on them with no problems. Our driver is Mike Speck - an ace behind the wheel and knows this track extraordinarily well. I am getting a set of motons, and they will be used only for the track with the aero package on the car (will switch out to my koni 28 series for the street).
Specs are:
full roll cage, proper bracing in the right spots
r34 gtr brembos front and rear, raybestos motorsport pads, brake ducting
R32GTR front suspension, caster changed to 7degrees through custom upper control arm mounts. Stock swaybar, Stock Upper Arms, Stock lower arms, Stock tierods, Quaife Front LSD, urethane swaybar bushings
R33GTR rear suspension, full adjustable links, R32GTR stock swaybar, nismo LSD
Tires are Hoosier A6 (Autocross compound for time attack) and BFG R1 (enduro + lapping) 275/35 on a 18x10.5
Torque Split is running fixed with 40-55-60psi in the transfer case (ATTESSA eliminated) depending on preference and tires/track condition
its a built motor, borg warner airwerks twinscroll turbo, expecting 680-700hp on E85 (e85 helps response and spool), good oiling system and cooling is getting improved right now
here are some pics of the engine setup while i was daily driving it (engine/turbo will remain unchanged) and the twinscroll borg warner S300SX 88-75 turbo, with 90 degree compressor housing.

This thing is gonna be retarded!!!!!!!!!!
350 ft-lbs+ of torque from 4500-8000 in a 4 wheel drive 2700 lb car.
This should be insane, I wish I could watch in person.

WOW, ridiculous! Looks pretty perfect
Could you elaborate on how you control the torque split manually? You just regulate oil pressure to the transfer case or somethin?
Good luck in the time attack. Looks like the competition is pretty tough but i'm rooting for ya!

u guys never released pricing for the s13 awd swap? im expecting it to be in the 13,000 range?
we will not be offering an R13 conversion kit anytime soon. HOWEVER - the main reason we are entering this race, to debut our DIY R14 kit in the magazine. In a few months we will be releasing a DIY-R14 kit that any skilled and competent mechanic with a 220V MIG can install. The price is going to be much lower than previous (please dont call the sales office bc they know nothing about this).
this conversion does not work in the S13 chassis nearly as well as S14.
This thing is gonna be retarded!!!!!!!!!! 350 ft-lbs+ of torque from 4500-8000 in a 4 wheel drive 2700 lb car. This should be insane, I wish I could watch in person.
To be fair, she weighs 2950lb, the RB26 is a huge bitch! However well be making much more than 350lb-ft in race mode so it will be exciting to watch. Just ordered (4) go pro HD cameras to get some good footy
Could you elaborate on how you control the torque split manually? You just regulate oil pressure to the transfer case or somethin?Good luck in the time attack. Looks like the competition is pretty tough but i'm rooting for ya!
torque split in these cars is pretty simple, just variable pressure on a wet multi-plate clutch (just like inside an automatic transmission) so all you need to do is have a regulated control of hydraulic pressure on that wet clutch and thats what we developed our electronic attessa eliminator. im working on a complete install and FAQ for a total revampe of our R14 website and all this will be answered with pics and in depth info
couldnt you atleast get some glass headlights? anyway badass car!
glass headlights are heavier. the only thing the headlights will change to is s14a or s15
holy shit. that is a monster!

Dam ive been following this car since it was featured in Modified! Dam what hard work you have invested in that car, and it show's big time! Good luck on all the exposure it will be getting in the shoot out.
seriously.....now that's how you build a car!!! Props to you guys at Full Race and good luck this year!!!

thanks guys, just spent all day welding some fender braces in (cage does not pierce the firewall) and working on the fuel system and belly pan. one of the gangster fabricators at Full-Race made some siiiick RUCAs, ill post pics up tomorrow, maybe some pics of the belly pan and jack points too
it might make it out to the east coast this summer, if not this one definitely next summer
Will we be seeing it at the Redline Time Attacks this year???
I'm currently selling my Street Class STi and will be building an S14 next! It's enlightening to see what you all have done with it!

to be honest this is my fun street car, not really meant to be a competitive time attack machine. If we decide to compete in redline, i have (2) s14 shells that we will choose between for another R14... although what class would we be in? I really dont follow the rulebook, just build my cars how i want

Um, you do realize Nascar is on the cutting edge of many other technologies riggt? Just because it looks like some random GT (which is a generalzied statement from any racing body) doesn't mean its' the same.
Nascar tech, mostly engine tech, is incredible. 9000 RPM on pushrods, at WOT, for 500 miles...OMG that's nuts. Most stock SR's would explode at 10 miles of WOT lol. The stresses the NASCAR motors absorb and take is darn near equal to the top fuelers of NHRA. Not even F1 comes close. Sure they don't use the 'highest mechanical E' tech out there ,but whats to say that intricate fancy shit is better?
9000+ rpm
700+ hp
big ass bores, shor tstrokes
500 mph of darn near WOT
get back to me when you can design a motor to withstand that kind of abuse.
Cliffs: Just becaus you think its' some redneck junk, doesn't mean it is. There is a BUNCH of tech in those cars.

The stresses the NASCAR motors absorb and take is darn near equal to the top fuelers of NHRA. Not even F1 comes close.
I dont agree with that at all. 19,000 RPM going up and down through the rev range on a 2.4L V8 making 850hp pushing a car that makes more than twice its weight in downforce. You cant even start an F1 motor unless its fed preheated 150* oil. F1 has a 2 motor limit the entire year, NASCAR can rebuild motors every race. So I would think F1 engines are on par in the stress related area.
And I dont think anything comes with in miles to NHRA Top Fuel in terms of engine stress.
On topic, I like those mod'ed RLCA's. I wouldnt mind making some of those my self when I get around to replacing the ball join with a spherical bearing + stud.

WhiteGLX
03-20-2010, 04:33 PM
All the air that would pass through the FMIC and rad setup before would still go under the car, really shouldnt be any changes at all, and if he puts a splitter on that extends back under the IC it should help stabilize the air under the car a little bit.

as promised - here is the latest update for you guys:
To start this installment, many hardcore car guy know that the best suspension in the world is MOTON. Seriously - nothing else comes close. I researched my options - considered ohlins, bilstein, kw, penske but at the end of the day, none had what i was looking for except Moton. I HATE upgrading parts and only want to buy good suspension once, so i bit the bullet and what showed up was heavenly. The quality of these absolutely exceeded expectation, and im blown away (im a very picky engineer, this doesnt happen often) suspension of this caliber is seriously next level :bowdown :bowdown :bowdown :bowdown :bowdown :bowdown :bowdown :bowdown :bowdown :bowdown :bowdown :bowdown :bowdown :bowdown MOTON
http://full-race.com/prototype/R14/update5/MOTON_OMFG.jpg
^^ a total thing of beauty. Moton double adjustables (15 independant bump and rebound settings, blowoff valve system for high speed bump control, huge main piston, remote reservoir compression adjusters mounted on swivel banjo fittings (makes mounting them easy!), and 2.25" spring hardware.

I would like to see some companies (Garrett, Tial, etc.) come out with more "interesting" compressor housing designs....
Do you think there would be any gain from a smoother transition from compressor outlet to hotpipe?
Almost all turbo setups ask the air to take a 90* turn immediately after exiting the compressor.
Just wondering if there is a better way......
That thing looks ridiculous!
Btw Geoff, my buddy has a FullRace GT35R kit (mani, turbo, twin 38mm Tials) that we just put on his RB26....tomorrow is the big day, we are getting tuned by Evans!
Let me ask you directly....
For a STOCK RB with just your manifold and GT35R.....
He is running the OEM GTS pump in series with a Walbro (255 lph) external inline pump.
I was debating with him whether or not that is going to be enough.....what is your take?
Btw, he is running 1000cc IDs...

later this year you are going to see a LOT of interesting developments in the turbocharging world - turbo technology will make a huge leap forwards :)
i suggest your friends stock RB get a set of tomei poncams or hks 264 - its a HUGE benefit to have these in for the dyno, and they work just fine on stock head/valvesprings/shims. I would think he will have enough fuel with that setup, but dont really know for sure - maybe would be a good idea to make sure you are watching the fuel pressure gauge during the dyno runs

Yeah, thanks for the heads up. I have tried to get my 2 friends with RBs to do some sort of a mild cam (the one has a Greddy IM), but neither of them are willing/want to do it....it's a really easy install, especially if you aren't touching the valves/springs.
I am just worried, bc the "rule of thumb" I've read is that 2 similar pumps in series flows only about 20% more than the smaller pump.
Both pumps are 255 lph....so that's roughly 300 lph....he will probably be okay, I just don't want to see (Jeff) Evans have to stop short of the maximum possible output bc my buddy was too lazy/cheap to do a proper fuel setup...

yes - take a look at the S200 (T3 Twinscroll) and S200SX (T4 twinscroll) turbos they are great performers, the T4 works best for a 1.00-1.09-1.15 a/r on an SR20

I'm very interested to see how small they can get the MVR ~ the standard 44mm seems much larger than it needs to be. Were you worried about running out of gate with two MV-S's?

check valve prevents it from seeing vacuum. boost only is what the wastegate should see.
the big benefit of the compressor housing being the source for wastegate signal is that there is no vacuum signal, there is no pressure drop across the intercooler, and no need for a check valve. so just drill and tap the comp hsg.

I hope you prove them wrong. I have high hopes for you guys!

The preliminary findings at the track were as follows:
1. Aluminum exhaust broke in two at a v-band fitting.
2. The leading edge of the back half of the exhaust was dragging on the ground.
3. The open exhaust on the front portion melted the awd controller causing trans fluid to pour out.
4. Sparky sparks + trans fluid + super heated exhaust fumes = get the extinguishers!
Car and driver were fine and the car was able to complete it's time attack before it happened.

You can hear the exhaust break around 1min 25secs, and thats when things start to get scary..
the culprit: exhaust failed, ruptered high pressure p/s lineand p/s fluid ignited. We used a 22" long stainless DP, followed by the long aluminum exhuast. We used header wrap at the front of the exh, to protect the p/s hoses from heat, and this likely shortened the exhaust's life.. This aluminum exh has seen a lot of abuse, many hours of dynoing, street driving and practice sessions. The heavy loads during the time attack event were just too much and it gave up
fortunately it was an easy cleanup, the car is already back to blingin! needs a little work this weekend, but will be 100% by monday.

stainless steel exhaust for the street - and for the race track do a short "upside-downpipe" venting out the hood. This is less weight, heat out of the engine bay, and downforce .. a win:win

Here is the dynochart from my latest round of testing with my RB26 (this was done in 4wd, on UMS's awd dynapacks, previous testing was done in 2wd mode)
http://www.full-race.com/prototype/twinscroll/R14-S300Pvs8875.jpg
this compares the S300P 0.80 a/r to the S300SX w/ 88mm compressor 1.00 a/r
orange: 0.80 a/r S300P, custom machined housing - 17.5psi tapering to 16psi
green: 0.80 a/r S300P, custom machined housing - 20.5psi tapering to 17.5psi
VS
pink:S300SX 88-75 1.00 a/r 19psi
blue: S300SX 88-75 1.00 a/r 19psi (same as above) with slight cam gear adjustment (advanced to +3 intake from +2, and added a little fuel during spoolup)
you can see the considerable gains in area-under-the-curve that i was able to acheive with this new turbo, and very small loss up top - well worth the tradeoff.
now that im all done, considering the amount of work I went through for this and time and expense required to make this S300P work, i think the 83-75 would have provided virtually the same powerband, and fit better as well as be easier to install.
http://full-race.com/prototype/twinscroll/FRTS83-75STI.JPG

Geoff, I am interested in your take on "area under the torque curve"
If I compare the green curve to the blue curve, from 4500-8000 RPM, the blue curve seems to have a larger integral.
However, if you include points from say, 3500 or 4000 upward, there is a dramatic difference, because the green curve makes gobs more torque from 3000-4500 RPM.
That being said, wouldn't it depend upon the application?
If you see yourself in some road-racing situation where you DO care about 7000-8000 RPM range and DO plan to keep the revs always above 4500 RPM, wouldn't the Blue curve be better?
Just wanting to learn and playing Devil's advocate....
Educate me please!

you need to consider the gearing of the trans being used, and the powerband that the engine creates to suit the gearing + the track it is being used on. A low speed track that has low-rpm 2nd gear turns will really hurt if you only have a peaky high rpm powerband.
a stock GTR 5 speed trans has absurdly tall gears, which makes setting up a powerful AND responsive turbocharger system very difficult, especially on the low speed tracks and auto-x applications.
obviously a high speed track or a drag race application would be an entirely different powerband/gearing

Would this be the reason you always see GTRs driven balls to the wall in serious racing? Like they have to push the car hard to keep it in the power band AND fast on the track.

more than likely it is the reason you see so many GTR's with dog mission gear boxes with custom gears to make up for this shortfall especially on circuits like Tsukuba.

im not sure of the answer on that, as every car we get in we typically push hard on the track... with the GTRs they have the following downsides:
big iron I6 + turbos = heavy nose weight -- 1100lb on each front wheel is HEAVY, moving the motor back is $$$ and a straight race car at that point
2.6L engine doesnt generate much torque -> 2.8L or 3.0L strokers make a lot of sense
5 speed gearing sucks --> go to a 6 speed R34 box
more than likely it is the reason you see so many GTR's with dog mission gear boxes with custom gears to make up for this shortfall especially on circuits like Tsukuba.
yes, but the r34 6 speed getrag is an even better option.. thats what im saving my monies for! gonna have to sell some parts soon

We got 2nd place in AWD class. :)
Full-Race has recently received a lot of PMs and emails now that the new issue of the Tuner shootout is on newstands. The updated R14 portion of the Full-Race.com site is coming next week, but to answer the basic questions, ill copy/paste the beginning text for you:
Full-Race.com -- R14 DIY HOW-TO info
this portion of the Full-Race.com website breaks down the R14 conversion in detail. Pictures and information help to make it clear how to do this AWD RB26 swap. If you've done a few different motor swaps, installed some turbokits, know how to use a hand-drill + welder (220 Volt Mig welder recommended), and are committed/prepared to take on a big project you can tackle this install. If you dont know how to do swaps or install aftermarket turbokits, do not start this conversion until you have more experience or better understand the process.
A) Required BIG parts:
-(95-98) S14 Chassis, S15 will work too. S13 will NOT work for this swap!! <
-R32 GTR front clip w/ complete front suspension and complete rear subframe <easy to find at any big JDM importers/yards>
-Full-Race R14 DIY kit
^^^If you can acquire all of the above items^^^ all the big purchases are out of the way.
B) Full-Race R14 kit consists of these parts required to do the swap:
R14 Frame Rails (Left and Right side)
R14 billet frame blocks
Subframe Bolts/washers
LHD RB26 steering rack
Transmission Mount
Frame side Transmission Mount-plate
Front Upper-Control-Arm Structure (Upper Shock mounts)
Lower Shock mounts
1-piece Driveshaft (Aluminum or Steel)
1/2" Eye-to-Eye Coilovers - Moton or Koni (Circletrack or Road Race style heim-mounted)
Here is how it all works, and enough instructions to get you going:
First, start by getting the R32 GTR clip fully disassembled. We will be using almost every major component from this clip. Keep all the suspension control arms, brakes, hubs and bolts sorted, with their respective hardware. The engine and transmission should be inspected and it is recommended to refresh it - new timing belt, clutch, oil pump, etc. At this point, the subframe should be unbolted from the motor mounts and then cleaned/prepped for the swap....
to be continued. Thanks for the interest in the R14 conversions!

This car is awesome! I am building an awd S14 right now also, but I am using the front shock towers from the R32 clip and R32 rear subframe instead of R33 rear subframe like the R14. Getting everything in and fitted seems to be no problem for me with the drivetrain. However, I am very interested in the torque split controller your friend is building. Got any new details on that? Lacking automatic torque split is the only problem I can see with the awd system being swapped in.

i ran them, however they developed way too much slop and i had to go back to the drawing board. yeah our webguy is seriously slacking. he has to get a boot in the ass for taking this long... my apologies. i promise you we have worked wayyy too hard on this conversion kit to abandon it! Also seeing how cheap some gtr clips have been going for lately really makes doing a build like this that much more attainable

thanks, the hardest part was redesigning the welded-on components so that an end user could install easily. The frame rails, trans mt and double wishbone conversion used to be built one-by-one on the car. Now, the end user cleans the surface (preps for MIG welding) bolts in those items, and then lays some beads down. a LOT less work this way
please hurry with the site I have been on and off the page looking for updates since December 2007 when that Modified Mag issue came out and yes I still read that article from time to time. I thought you guys completed abandoned the R14 so i was left dreaming and quoting STAR TREK "to boldly go where no man has gone before."
I have also been watching and waiting patiently. I think there are plenty of other lurkers keeping an eye on this as well.

absolutely amazing read...all 8 pages. Amazing video...great way to end it with the smoke coming in the cabin....it's amazing to see the fire come through the (shift boot)something while you were looking out the door....and then you opened the door..and fire everywhere...amazing.
great build...absolutely amazing....my mouth has been catching fly's for 45 minutes.

Looks like the competition is pretty tough but i'm rooting for ya!

hey guys - sorry there havent been any updates. We've been absolutely SWAMPED with r&d work since the new BorgWarner EFR turbos have been in development. Its taken away all of my free time that I could normally spend on my R14, but worth every minute. if you have a spare minute check out some of the turbo technology here:
BorgWarner EFR Turbos | Full-Race.com (http://www.full-race.com/articles/borgwarner-efr-turbos.html)
This week we head to SEMA in Las Vegas and as soon as we get back ill be back on the R14 website and how-to writeup. And then the R14 will be back on the track with the EFR 8374 turbo :)

I just read through the entire EFR page. Holy cow. That looks awesome. Any chance you have a 1JZ-GTE (VVTi version) manifold in the works? Haha. This would be an awesome DD/weekend drifter setup!
Can't wait to hear more.

wow intresting turbo ! finally time some one re-invented the wheel, lots of cool features lots of technology in this.
so whats the price point looking like, when is it available to the public?
im assuming if it fits on a sr20 w/ twin scroll mai, it should also fit on a ka-t?
really looking forward to see dyno comp. on this!

glad to hear you guys are excited! The amount of attention and interest that we saw at SEMA was unreal. A lot of people are really excited for the new turbo tech that BorgWarner is bringing to the table. there is a great video on the EFR background if you are bored:

LOL, Ive gone to the quiktrip on university often since its right around the corner from Full-Race. Recently we got an E85 station on our street :D 1 block away from the shop, we I have only been taking the beaters for regular gasoline. all the turbo cars here have been switching over to E85

we rarely get requests for the 1JZ manifolds/turbokits but if you are serious and we can get a few more people we can do it. Typically we will require an initial order of (10) manifolds. The EFR turbos really have a huge benefit becuase they make the manifolds much less expensive. The Wastegate ports are actually the most time consuming and labor intensive part of the manifold fabrication

We are finally finishing up the details on the R14 conversions, and it looks like pricing will be $4800. That includes everything needed for the swap except your S14 and the donor GTR clip

the car is undergoing surgery... again. Currently she is getting a carbonetic rear LSD, sunroof is going away, Kognition rear wing will be installed, and a diet all the way around. Id like to pull 200 lbs out, so there is a lot of work to do!
the big fun is the EFR 8374 w/ 42mm dual internal wastegate :) by removing the 2 wastegates, dumptubes and WG ports, that was a big chunk of weight and complexity just disappeared

The car we had in the BorgWarner SEMA booth was a Full-Race equipped R34 GTR w/ EFR 8374 .92 a/r twinscroll and 42mm dual internal wastegate. The car is running well on 91 octane right now and the owner is absolutely blown away by the powerband. This is his 3rd R34 GTR, all have been extremely modified - and he said none of them have been anything like this. some photos from: http://autoholics.com/2010/11/05/BorgWarner-is-Serious-About-Turbo-Power-305516

this gate works really well - and saves a lot of $$ -- (2) wastegates, (2) 1.5" dumptubes, (4) stainless flanges, (4) vband clamps and a shit load of work/weight/complexity
What kinda weight numbers are you trying to get down to with it? 2400lbs wet and ready to race?
to be honest, the RB engines and driveline are sooo heavy compared to the typical SR setups, i think i can get my street car down to 2900 (power windows, radio/speakers, etc). I am slowly working on my racecar to reach 2500, but it wont be ready for a track until 2012. need to get the street car where im content with it before i can focus 100% on the race car

hmm very interesting.. so all this dual wastegate design will work just as well as two 38/44 mm wastegates??
curious what about lower boost pressure say 10-14psi.. is its stil as efficient??
so the way it works is that it expell's exhaust gasses from both ends of the twinsrcoll?
or is it two ports one for each scroll?
FullRaceGeoff
02-04-2011, 04:08 PM
On a twinscroll setup you really dont want mixing between cylinders, thats how twinscroll spools so fast; there is less header volume and no negative interactions between exhaust events.
The way the EFR internal wastegate works is one port for each scroll -- the object is to keep the flow paths completely divided for maximum efficiency. It works well at all boost levels, 10psi to 30psi

I think you got everything up for sale on your store right now for the sr20, these will fit on your current twin scroll manifolds, but I didn't see any options to remove the external wastegate ports.

YES - Kits are being built now. In fact today we had an official "R14 shop meeting" to ensure our guys in the office and the fab shop had a solid understanding of the fine details and fab work involved with R14 chassis conversions. We had our first customer, Prosper Norbert, install the kit without problems and ran his car last weekend at a local drag race, no problems

EFR turbos are mocked up, have not dynoed any of the twinscrolls yet, only singlescrolls. Twinscrolls will arrive in April, and we have TONS of dyno time scheduled
