I am looking to install a performance clutch. What kind of performance improvements will I see? Are there any problems with them for day to day driving? What brands are good?

I've got a Centerforce dual-friction clutch and its not as smooth as stock. Its way more durable though. A lot noisier too.

i like ACT better
i never heard of a noisier clutch....
i had ACT on my other car....
performance clutches grab fast meaning fast start up and better in race shifting situations.... also it is stiffer/bouncer meaning it will pop up faster after u hit the clutch so it will grab faster...
i didnt have a problem with day driving... at first u will think it is too quick but u will get used to it...
i like ACT stage 1.... if u set it to your perfect height then it will be less problems for your daily driving
I have ran the following.
Clutchmaster STage III on my 96 240SX Turbo. Just broke it in and cant tell if I like it yet, my pedal needs adjustment. Otherwise its smooth as stock and grips enough for my power levels. Its starting to chatter a little now.
ACT Street Disc. Awsome clutch, had it on my 91 240SX. Smooth as stock and grips way better. Never chattered before.
ACT 6-Puck Disc. This was on my 240SX Turbo before I replaced it. I wouldnt recommend this to anyone, not very fun for the street at all. LOTS of disc chatter too.
After all these my fav's are the ACT Street and the Clutchmasters Stage III.
The noise that I am referring to is probably the same as the chattering that West is referring to. Higher-end clutches will often make these noises. It is normal.

ohhh i dont find a need for stage 3 clutch unless u r pulling as much HP as West....
stage 1 or street is good enough
Get the stage III anyways though. It wont hurt the drivablility a bit. Dont get any clutch that is a Puck Disc type though. They handle more HP than most cars need and are not fun for the street. ACT Street disc is about the same as the Clutchmasters Stage III.
West, the clutch I ordered is a C.M stage 5. Do you think this will be a pain for the street?
Definitely. Its a dual puck disc design. It will grip fast and hard. Its ezier to spool the turbo with a organic type disc just because it doesn't engage so quickly. The stage IV is a good choice if you still want to drive on the street because its spring loaded which will make it ezier to engage and disengage the clutch. My ACT 6 Puck disc wisent spring loaded and it sucked driving it. With my stage III the ride is way less harsh and spooling of the turbo is allot ezier. I'm not sure how long my Stage III will last though with my kind of HP levels and my kind of driving. I will let everyone know. There is no good affordable clutch kit for our cars as of now IMHO. I was going to see about fitting a eclipse Exedy type clutch to our trannys but Exedy wasn't very helpful.

</td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'>since my CF DF was installed i've noticed a loud noise too. it's annoying. i don't hear it when i'm stopped since i'd have the clutch in. but once i get going, the sound of the missing timing chain guides and the clutch noise create a pandemonium of sound. ahhh! well it's not THAT bad but i still hate it.
Chatter mainly happens in 4th gear while your just crusing. Otherwise it can happen when you at speed and not accelerating in any gear. Mainly it happens in 3rd and 4th.

I put an ACT street clutch into my '95 and I loved it. It was not difficult for normal driving and was real nice for quick shifts. It engages much closer to the floor though which takes a little getting used to.
Im not sure how good it would be for a highly modded car, but for one that is almost stock, its well worth it.
Id highly reccomend it.
