I recently moved to IL and weather here is very different from socal and was wondering
which oils to use for my engine and manual trans?

Find the FSM for your drivetrain. Look up the temperature range where the vehicle is. The FSM specifies the viscosity you should be using for your temperature range.
I can't help you any more than that since you did not say what car this is.

out of 1991 fsm:
5w30 is preferred for all temps. gl4 only for tranny

as far as the trans goes. I currently use redline mt-90, however the cold shifting sucks. I would try out amsoil for tranny fluid
