Okay everyone. I am in the middle of doing an engine transplant on my '91 s13. I replaced the clutch and it included a new pilot bearing, so I tested fitted that onto the input shaft and it fit. So we put the pilot bearing in, aligned the clutch, etc, etc.

Well everything was going fine until we started to try and slide the input shaft into the engine. IT WON'T FIT. After taking it out I noticed that the pilot bearing looked like it had been chewed away by the imput shaft so I am assuming it is to big, but if fit on the tranmission before hand.

What could be wrong? And how can I fix it? I am using the same pilot bearing that came with the clutch and I called FRsport and they said it's the right one. I just don't want to mess anything up.

Thanks for your help

if your sure it fit the mission before installing it, and it fits the engine..

ive had the same problem before, you probably mushroomed the pilot bearing when installing it

use a little sandpaper or a round file on the inside of the bearing until the mission shaft fits in it

how did you install the pilot bearing in the first place??

You're not the first person who's had to deal with difficult clutch jobs
I've had transmission shafts that refused to go in for days
and I've had transmissions slide in after only one attempt

we use the end part of the driveshaft to rotate the the tranny slightly to help align it
that sometimes works

btw, did you soak the pilot bearing in oil for a few minutes before install?

I lubed it up and lightly tapped it in. It really didn't take much at all to get it in. I thought it would be a lot easier.

So pretty much just taper the end of the bearing?

yeah just enough to slide the shaft in, but not too much or it would be like not having a pilot bearing

good luck

Most modern Nissan/Datsun use the same pilot bushing. check it for installation damage
