Carbon build up?Whats the cause of this... I am trying to put back together one of my shells and I took the valve cover off to see this....

is sludge, old oil, shitty oil no worries you can clean it off and go from there...
The pictures were before and after cleaning it the best I could. Awesome thanks guys.

very common on high mileage motors
clean it, change your oil regularly

Use shell gasoline, it helps break down sludge.
