Rubbing noise in steering column area when I turn wheel to the right. No noise turning left even from the far right. If you turn wheel all the way to left and start turning right it makes noise all the way to the other side, off and on. Doesnt matter if car is moving. Been like this for about 5 yrs . pretty constant. Makes this noise when I turn wheel with steering wheel off.
video of noise. the engine is making the tapping noise.

Do you happen to know why air in the system causes that noise? (only makes noise turning right)thanks. I took the steering wheel off and rotated it with the nut and I still heard the noise so it is not the steering wheel rubbing anything.

Odd, maybe it's the steering column bushing that's worn out?
I honestly have no clue, I hope you get it sorted out.

Mine only makes a noise when I am driving and it sounds like my tire is rubbing but i checked and it isnt. other then that I noticed that the owner before me forgot to fix setting suspension on the car. So i got to figure out specs and havent had time to do so.

You know, I actually have this problem as well.
I have an aftermarket power steering pump, custom power steering lines, aftermarket steering wheel, and solid steering rod bushing.
The only thing left it could be is the rack itself, or something in the front suspension.
I have Megan coilovers and stock everything else.

I have not had time to look at this further but I did notice today that the interior boot where the shaft punctures the firewall appears to be twisted. I put my hand on the boot and it seemed to vibrate when the noise occurred. I always assumed it was the steering wheel rubbing something so I never investigated.

this happened to me too... it turned out to be my drivers side front wheel bearing... various other people had similar symptoms... mine would sound like a loud rubbing noise any time i turned my wheel to the right, even if it was just a lane change. no noise to the left though. my front strut mounts were also out, but i believe the wheel bearing was the cause of the noise...
hope this helps!

moved the rubber boot and noise is gone. video noise was not good portrayal. it was definitely the sound of something rubbing against leather.
the boot is not tied right at the top
