so i swapped an SR20DET into a 1990 S13, buuut for some reason cylinders 2 and 4 are not firing. its not the coils or the plugs. i was thinking maybe the ignitor chip but my friend said that if that was messed up than none of the cylinders would probably work. i tried searching the other forums but i could find anyone with the same problem. anyone have any ideas? id really appreciate it.

ECM is in fail safe mode, check basics, check the FSM, there are free downloads out there if you need them

anyone know how i can tell if its an actually blacktop ecu? the label was scratched off so i cant be sure. ive been reading up on other threads and some people that have had problems with only a few cylinders firing because their ecu was bad. i got my engine off jdm-online but im wondering if they could have sent me the wrong ecu.

Just a question, how do you know the coils are good? I'm assuming you swapped the coils from different cylinders and/or tried them on another car.

If they are good, just trace the problem through the wires via test light or voltmeter. I don't have the FSM for S13 SR's but I'm 100% sure it will show the wiring diagram for your ignition system and if you're lucky, it'll have the step by step trouble diagnostic for your problem.

If ECM see's problems with the inputs it sends the output to only 2 cylinders

yeah thats exactly how i did. ill have to try and find a manual.

Hashiriya415 how would i bring it out of fail safe mode or check to even see if it is in fail safe mode?

if its' an S13 blacktop that came out of a kouki 180sx type x, it'll have fins on the head in the front, and will have a FAT o2 sensor in the turbine exhaust housing.

check your CAS, also don't be so quick to cross something off your list...still should check igniter.

Really? I'd love to see some proof to back that up.
