I've been thinking about taking the plunge on a new mattress for some time now and am at a loss. I've got friends and family telling me everyone's out to get me and that buying a mattress from a retail store is like buying a used car; they're out to screw you. Since I am no mattress guru and everyone's back enjoys a unique feel what should I do?

The concerns I have:

1 sided pillow tops, non flippable, = bad idea?

$1000 plus, not worth the money?

Believing online review blogs; if you had a good experience would you take the time to let everyone else know?

The "package" I'm looking at it is a unique one (as the sales man explains it)

The bed is a King size Kingsdown Magnificence. the package consists of....

-Mattress (retail is $3995, I'm getting it for so cheap b/c its a discontinued model, so the 90 day trial won't be applicable)
-Box Springs (two small ones for king)
-"heavy duty" frame
-"protection" cover (water proof/hypoallergenic usually $150)
-2 memory foam pillows (usually $100 ea.)
-20 year non-prorated warranty
-15 months interest free financing
-free delivery and removal of old mattress
-don't have to buy my wife a Christmas present ($300 savings)

total all said and done is $1600

Dad says: Hell no, go to Sam's and get a $800 one...

The bed I have now is basically the most base model innerspring mattress you could imagine.

That deal seems "ok" to me. The best thing I can tell you is a good mattress is WELL worth the money. On a good mattress you sleep much more completely, wake up less, toss and turn less, feel more energized in the morning, and avoid possible back and knee pains. The bed I currently have was around $1300 and it was some of the best money I have ever spent. Alot of the fluff hes "throwing in" is usually included anyway like the haul away and delivery. The pillows are a matter of preferance, I never cared for the "memory" type pillows and prefer a feathered pillow (goose). Have you had a chance to actually lie on the bed yet?

^ yeah I actually just got back from the place; ran over there during lunch. It feels amazing, but I have to consider what I'm laying on now. I did mention to him that I'm worried about the extra cost of "deep pocket" sheets for such a thick mattress and he said he might be able to swap out the pillows for a sheet set. Since I have to buy sheets regardless, that would be pretty sweet. I'm probably looking at a $200 set any ways...

Not a bad mattress. Sounds like he is upselling the shit out of it. Most of that stuff is included in the price of any mattress. The best mattresses only last 8-10 yrs. Used car salesman in the mattress store.

Real issue is that I think you are over paying for it. National chain has it for $999 Magnificence Pillow Top Mattress - Kingsdown Mattresses (http://www.mattressgiant.com/default.aspx?n=69&shop=store&perpage=45&category=BDDG&model=990637)

I would lay on it and them goto Sams and pull out the Serta Pillow-tops they have there.

Sheet sets are no more expensive then normal. Just have to look around more for the deep ones. I find it harder to find the material/weave of sheets I like more then the deep.

I paid about $1600 for my current bed. My wife loves it & makes her happy, so that means I get that in return. My last mattress was a pillowtop, & cost about $800. After about 2 years, it had low points and she would end up sinking in them. Our new one is one of the Temperpedic type mattresses, and we have no low points on it at all.
It takes about 1-2 weeks to get used to it though. We walked on ours to "loosen" it up a bit.

I noticed that price difference too. The response he gave me is that that might be an online purchase only sale and it didn't matter b/c there isn't one left to sell; who knows if that's the truth but apparently there are only two left . I went through the cost of another bed there and none of the add-ons are included in the sale; hell you even have to pay for delivery ($35)

I did actually go to Sam's and did the pull out. They had three of the pillow tops as test beds. They felt fine but I would definitely say that this one felt more plush; they were more bouncy...

I've heard tempur-pedic makes you sleep on it for a few weeks before you can return it, so it has time to break in.

I'm going to call a bunch of the mattress giants and request quotes on that bed.....Let's see who's lying...

I'm going to copypasta what I posted on a local forum to a good group of friends regarding mattresses. I sell mattresses/futons/waterbeds for a living. Don't know how much it will help you, but here it is. I will also try to answer any questions too, but be forewarned, I'm rarely on Zilvia anymore, and it's even rarer to see my in OT.

So, I think it was Rich that asked me about mattresses not that long ago, and just today, Corey did as well. I thought I'd actually make a thread about, just in case anyone else ends up mattress shopping in the future. I may or may not get it all down now, but if not, I'll add more later. Anyone with questions, feel free to post them. I'll do my best to answer, or find an answer.

Now...

Mattress shopping is a pain in the ass. I'll be the first to admit that. A good salesperson can help with that, but a shitty one can most definitely make it a LOT worse.

They should know their product, inside and out. Preferably, they should know the competition's product as well. They should also be able to narrow your selection down to a specific few beds. My shop is fairly small. We have somewhere around 30 sets of bedding on the floor. I usually narrow it down to a choice 3 in the very beginning. That makes it easier on the buyer(s) and easier on me.

If you go into a store and just start flopping on every bed in the store, you'll walk out more confused that when you walked in. You should have a general price range you're looking to spend. That will immediately narrow things down. Say you want to spend in the 1000-1500 dollar range. That will keep them from showing you stuff that costs 3 and 4 grand. That will also keep you away from the bottom of the barrel junk.

You also obviously need to know what size you're looking for. There is usually a very small difference between full and queen. It's worth it to get the queen if you've got the extra little bit of room. A king will usually jump up quite a bit in price, but that's because it's giving you another foot and a half.

While we're talking about sizes

Twin - 39"x75"
Full - 54"x75"
Queen - 60"x80"
King - 78"x80"
Cal King - 72"x84"

The other thing you will need to know, is what kind of feel you're looking for. Softness/firmness is totally different from support, so don't go thinking the old addage "Firmer is better for you back" to heart. Support is the key. Softness/firmness depends on two things, and two things only.

a) Personal preference (everyone is different, some like firm, some like soft)
2) Sleep habits

By sleep habits, I mean whether you predominantly sleep on your back, side, or stomach.

Side sleepers usually need something more medium to soft because on your side, your shoulders and your hips stick out. You have to give them somewhere to go. They need some cushion or you'll have a lot of pressure on the shoulders and hips, and nothing anywhere else. That can give you hip aches, shoulder aches, put your arm to sleep, etc.

Back sleepers are kind of in the middle. They can sleep on a wider variety of things. Anywhere from firmish, to medium, to softish.

Stomach sleepers usually want something firm. Reason being, on your stomach, with the majority of the body weight in the stomach/midsection, the lower back will hammock, and you'll wake up with your lower back killing you.

From there, you can narrow your choices a lot. The other thing you'll want to try to decide, is what type of bed you want. There are traditional coil mattresses, foam mattress, water beds, air beds, etc.

I'll post more about those later, but for now, I'll give you my personal fav. Latex. No springs. Latex is the most durable material out there when it comes to bedding. It will hold up longer than pretty much anything else out there. It's technically a rubber, not a foam, so it doesn't show body impressions as much as something with polyurethane based foams. It is also antimicrobial and hypoallergenic by nature.

I'm tired of typing and heather keeps giving me "get off the computer looks", so I'll post more tomorrow.

Night all.

EDIT:

Here's more.

I've been in the industry now for over 8 years. I delivered for 3 summers while in high school, and I've been back full time for at least 7 years. I am now the asst manager, or manager, whatever you wanna call me. I'm under the owner. I've seen a lot of changes in things in that time. Basically, mattress manufacturers are trying to find ways to cut costs anywhere they can.

Back 5ish years ago, when everything went to "No Flip" design, yeah, woohoo, you don't have to flip it anymore. Most companies didn't do anything to beef up the bed, they just deleted the padding on the bottom. This effectively cut the cost of the bed by a third to a half. The guts (spring unit in most cases) was the same, but they only put half the padding in the bed. That let them sell essentially the same bed, for the same price.

"Look guys, no price increases this year!"

Well no shit, you took away a third of the bed.

Most people didn't flip their beds as often as they should've anyway. With a new 2 sided mattress, you should flip it at least once a month, if not twice a month, for the first year to two years. That's when the bed will take the most wear and tear. It's brand new, and now, all of a sudden, it has one or two people on it for 4-10 hours a night, every single night.

When people start talking about how long a mattress lasts, things get tricky. How long it lasts till what? It disintegrates into thin air? Till it has a slight body impression in it? What?

I've pulled mattresses out of houses that were 30 and 40 years old, and should have been replaced LONG before they were. It's all relative to what you're willing to put up with.

Any mattress out there will get a body impression. Period. If anyone tells you otherwise, they're lying to you. Either that, or they're selling a solid block of latex, which is rare (although not impossible, we had them a couple years ago, but they were priced out of the market here).

Padding in mattresses usually consists of a combination of a few things.

Polyurethane based foams
Latex (Actually a rubber, not a foam)
Visco Elastic Foam (Memory Foam)
Fiber (Dacron, Hollowfill, etc. like in a pillow)

In a coil mattress, you have a spring unit, with padding on top of it. Usually anywhere from an inch and a half, up to, possibly 9 inches of foams.

The less padding in a bed, usually the firmer the bed will feel.

The more padding, the softer.

The less padding, the less wear you'll notice.

The more paddding, the more wear.

You can't really wear out a spring unit. It's steel. They don't usually wear out, unless they break. The padding is what wears. Any poly-based foam will show a body impression. Memory foam is also poly-based. It will show body impressions just like any traditional foam.

Fiber will compress faster than anything else. Beds with a lot of fluffy fiber, dacron, etc on top will compress quickly. Serta makes beds for Sam's, and they're fluffed up with a lot of fiber. They usually have a huge hole in the middle by less than a year.

Latex.

Latex is THE MOST DURABLE material out there as far as mattresses are concerned. It's a rubber, not a foam. It doesn't compress like a foam will. Being a rubber, it will eventually... dry rot, for lack of a better term. It will start to dust, and powder, usually on the bottom of the mattress, above the box. My grandfather got rid of a latex bed that was 35 years old. It was still pretty flat across the top of the bed, but the bottom was dried out. Now that was back when you could buy a solid 6-8" block of latex with a piece of fabric over it. The fabric usually wore through before the latex wore out.

It's hard to find a solid latex mattress now. Most foam beds, whether they're latex, or memory foam, or a combo of the two, will have other foams in them. They other stuff is what will wear out.

I do have a 3 bed latex line right now, and the top of the line one is fairly soft, but still very supportive. It has 10 inches of latex in it. By today's standards, that's quite a bit. It has a 2-3" layer of medium density base foam under it, and a high density foam edge system as well. It's in the $3k range in a king size. It has a small layer of lamb's wool in the top. This will be a little cooler in the summer, and a little warmer in the winter. Then there's 10" of latex under that, and a small layer of base foam under that.

It's an awesome bed for the money, and I'd probably put it up against most anything else out there.

Again, the thing to remember is anything will get a body impression. Latex will show MUCH less of one, than any other material out there. It's cooler than memory foam, and more durable than any other foam. Latex is also antimicrobial and hypoallergenic by nature, a benefit to people with allergies.

Corey,
My honest opinion is, there is a point of diminishing return when buying a coil mattress. You can only put so much padding on top of a spring unit. Now, when looking at foam beds, you've got the entire depth of the bed that can have, for instance, latex in it. That will cost a lot more than just an inch or two on top of a spring unit.

There are also lots of different coil units out there. From the sounds of it, that bed doesn't have a very stout one in it. A 440 is a low count, which is why it's a 12.5ga wire. For instance, my main coil bed line is made by Springwall. Their Chiropractic approved line uses a 14 to 14.5 ga wire, and anywhere from 640 coils, up to 1000 in a king. A stiff gauge low count coil unit will be a very stiff, firm unit. This means all the conformity will be done by the padding, which means it's taking all the wear and tear. A coil unit with more coils that are a little softer, will give a little more, and compress a bit more.

When it comes to most good quality coil mattresses, you'll usually get a good 10ish, maybe 15 years tops, of good, usable, life out of the bed. I'm of the opinion that, no matter how much you spend, that time frame will stay the same. That being said, I, personally, do think it would be wise to spend that kind of money on a bed that will wear out just as fast, as say, a one to two thousand dollar bed.

Now when it comes to latex, you can usually spend a bit more in the beginning, and get a little more life out of the bed. Like I said, my top of the line latex is right at $3k in a king size, and it will out last anything else in my store, and probably anything else in anyone else's store for that matter.

I don't know if any of this will help you, or anyone else for that matter, but that's my input on the subject. If you, or anyone for that matter has any more questions, be they generic bedding questions, or something specific, feel free to fire away.

Lay in that bed for a good 10-15mins. A lot put batting in the cover to make it feel soft. Compresses fast and you'll never notice it sleeping.

That's only cause it's new. If you jump on it and go at it it will be hard. but if you spend "time" in it before hand it should be fine.

We have a vera wang bridal bed thing.. cashmere pillow/euro top. Super nice... like my own personal cloud..

paid $1750 for it... personally. I can't justify the purchase as a matress.

But it's like a cloud. So thus it's ok. Cause it's my own cloud. Soooooooooo comfy.. so worth it. yeah I know... you can also go through disney and get the matresses used at the grand floridian. Just as nice. Just no sensual cashmere.

my matress is badass, its old, makes noises, etc.
but i have this overlay that my aunt got from a mattress place. its like the soft top part of a matress cut off (and/or not installed), and i just put it on top and bam.

instant softness.

with this economy i refuse to invest in a new mattress. heh.

PLEASE TAKE MY ADVICE BEFORE PURCHASING: IF YOU FIND A MATTRESS THAT YOU'RE INTERESTED IN AND YOU'RE ABOUT TO BUY IT, LAY ON IT FOR AT LEAST 15 MINUTES AND TRY IT OUT. I DON'T CARE IF THE SALES GUY/GIRL THINKS YOU'RE WEIRD JUST DO IT.

i wish someone would have told me that back years ago when i thought a mattress was a mattress. tried it out a couple minutes, made the deal. got it home and i was tossing and turning all night. haha...sucks...but hey i got use to it eventually lol. next time i buy i am definitely laying there for a while and making sure of my purchase before i lay down the money.

So it seems I overreacted about the cost. Once everything was laid out, I was paying 1000 for the mattress set and the rest covered the frame, taxes, covers, and sheets. All said and done, I've got this monster in my room now. Now my last question....

Does it take time to get used to a new mattress? I've had 3 nights of soreness thus far...

I brought my first mattress in 05, and originally it was over $2200's. There was no way I was going to buy that in my head but wifey wanted it. If you have the luxury of all the store being close and they usually are. They will always cut cost to compete. After alls said and done I think I was barely over 1100. The salesman seemed cool, so I asked how much did he make off the mattress and he eventually showed me. $50 over cost. Most people don't care about prices so they make their money off the original listed prices. Also by selling you mattress protectors that if you don't buy "voids" the warranty, as well as package bedding. If I would have used the Internet probably would have gotten a better deal. Also Costo and Sam's sometimes have the same stuff the mattress people have as deals but at those places prices are set. BTW never buy a box spring cause they will usually throw them in as the deal. Easier to get two twins inside of a large one, in case you move.

Thats gross. They say a mattress doubles in weight after about 8-10 years from all of the oil, dead skin, dirt, etc on your body and should be thrown out because of all the dirty stuff it holds.

I also got one of those memory foam mattress toppers for my new bed and I dont think I could ever go back. My next bed will definitely be a full tempur-pedic (sp?) memory foam mattress.

i sleep on stiff mattresses

as of now i sleep on a IKEA mattress with a metal frame that goes from a chair to a single bed.

At my gfs house i sleep on her full size ikea mattress with wooden frame thats literally on the floor but do to so much physical activity it has been squeeking loudly and her teenage relatives are onto us lol...............time for a new mattress/frame

the bed i used to have was sooooo soft but after sleeping over at my gfs house i had to convert to the hardened mattresses since my back would hurt a lot going from soft to hard

so i went from sleeping on a $1,200 bed set up to a $200 setup =(
