For my organizational behavior course at Purdue I am asking people to do this survey about CFL bulbs. I would greatly appreciate it if you could copy the handy dandy answer form into a new post and answer it. I understand the answer from is ridiculously simple and almost unnecessary, but I want all the responses in the same format. PLEASE AND THANK YOU!

I like that CFLs save $$. I'm more interested in that than being environmentally friendly. I'd love to have a 20KW grid-tied solar system, just for the fact that I'd never have to pay an electricity bill again.

Same can be said for a rainwater collection system, solar water heating, and composting toilets. It's a little extra work and a significant investment, but it comes down to paying less. Less money for incoming water, less money for heating that water, and less money for removing wastewater.

The more important 'green' to me looks like this:

I am in this class at Georgia Southern. Have you ever heard of a professor by the name of Bill Norton? He says he used to teach at Purdue.

I was GIVEN one of those lights, used, when they were newish, around like 1996-1997, I think.
That ONE bulb lasted like 10 years, I left it in a house when we moved and EVERYTIME an incandescent light goes out now (with the exception of my porch lights) I replace it with one, and the higher cost of them is offset by the fact that they last so long, and I am all for that in the long run.

Surprised that with all the shit in stores people wouldn't know this stuff. I enjoy the quality of light over an incandescent. Also the reduced use of power is nice.

My only question is what is the environmental impact of creating an CFL vs a incandescent bulb.

Thank you so much everybody for the responses so far, I appreciate it.

This is one of the questions I am investigating. What I am really comparing though is the environmental impact of creating 6 incandescents vs. one CFL.

You know, I'd actually thought of that once before -- Rube Goldberg Machine came to mind -- but me being an asshole American consumer didn't really care beyond my bottom line.

I would like to see a study of how much harm these bulbs to to the environment in their creation and disposal process. Especially since these bulbs contain mercury in them.
