I just picked up an s13 with an SR for a pretty good price. Owner said that the only problem is that it grinds. He claimed that it may be the slave or clutch master but the master cylinder looks brand new. From 1st to 2nd i cant rev past 2500 or it will grind. From 2nd to 3rd i cant rev past 2300 or it will grind. From 3rd to 4th is ok i still cant rev at high rpms. From 4th to 5th i can do wot pulls but i have to baby it. I cant just bang it into gear. Downshifting is a diffrent story tho. Only from 4th to 3rd will grind even if i wait for the rpm's to drop down and rev match it will still grind. SO today i changed the slave and it has a TINY BIT of improvement. 1st to 2nd still doesnt wanna rev past 2500. 2nd to 3rd is a bit better but still grinds at higher rpms. 3rd to 4th is also better. Downshifting back to 3rd from 4th has also shown improvement with MINIMUM to NO GRINDS but i have yet to solve why it still grinds thru the gears. Bad syncros?? Need trans fluid?? clutch maaster cylinder??

What Trans fluid should i use in this situation?? Royal Purple Syncromax or Redline MT90???

i would guess its the synchros. try using some thicker oil like the synchromesh you can get at the dealerships.

there is a thread here ranting about how amsoil is awesome..

i personally used amsoil and i love it too..

i thoguth redline was great, but it's not all it's cracked up to be, and most people on here say royal purple is too thin.

i say you try amsoil. make sure you only use GL-4, do not use GL5.

also, try shifting this way...let's say from 1st to 2nd. start out in first gear (durr) when you go to shift, put the clutch down, then shift to neutral, then let the clutch back up while you're in neutral..now, put the clutch back down (rev match if you need to, but you should be doing this all VERY quickly) and shift into 2nd like normal.

see if that alleviates the situation.

^^^Why wouldnt you be able to?

I've switched over from redline to amsoil gl-4 and OMFG, HUGE difference. Smoothes WAY better. I honestly dont think its the fluid or so you are using, i think its just the transmission.

Yea i did everything today. I changed the slave and checked the linkage. Its a bit better since i put in pennzoil syncromesh but i just think its the trans. Im getting some money back from the dude i bought it from so its all good :D

Royal Purple Gear Oil Sucks Donkey Balls.

I put that shit in my Tranny and my syncro's started to grind, swapped over to Mobile 1 75W90 and it helped out alot but sad to say the damage was already done, so i had to swap in a new gear set.

Same for one of my other friends his would grind too, swapped over to Mobile 1 and his problem went away

The original owner might have put in GL5 at some point because 75w90 GL4 gear oil is really hard to find locally. This might have caused some damage to the syncros.

Im sure there is 75 90 gear oil in pepboys i was there the other day. I bought Redline MT90 from a shop by Point Pleasant to put into my r154 trans in my s14 but i didnt wanna spend 50 dollars on a trans i know is fucked up.

by the way i got your PM get back at me with your location so i can look at these trans

For the Mobil 1 guys for the tranny, I've never found one that was GL-4 so I don't use it as it is GL-5.
