View Full Version : Drifting and Rollovers

Recently I saw a video clip of an AWD evo 6 or 7 going at it at the track, and he was just bustin' bal.ls until his car flipped. I feel sorry for the dude. Anyhow, so this makes me wonder if it's possible for a stock s14 240 to flip over because i'm trying to practice my drifts. Stock suspension. You guys think this is a pathetic and dangerous attempt and I should stop?

I've haven't fliped over 'yet' (knock on wood), but from what i've tryed the 240 is a pretty stable beast and won't flip over, taken that you stay on the track. I've seen a lot of cars that flip beacause they end up going off the track and they just eat it, don't really understand the physics but I wounld't worry about it. If you do feel like flipping over, tap the brakes till you come to a stop:)

I've seen a stock AE86 flip because the front suspension on the passenger side collapsed mid chokudori.
For a stock S14 it might not be as bad because of the longer wheelbase, however given stock suspension, yes, it could be dangerous. new bushings, shocks, springs would do the trick to make the car much more stable. besides, on a stock ride and doing drifts, the body roll is just KILLER. wouldn't recommend it.

i saw that video, the driver was an idiot, that's why he flipped, his wheels went off the track because he had no control and when the wheels hit the dirt/grass area it cause him to flip... he was a terrible driver and kept messing with those porsches! he deserved to wreck!... if you're worried about that happening to you, don't drive beyond your skill. that was the driver's mistake...

times imho you'll roll
suspension breaking
come sideways into dirt, and wheels catch (both wheels on one side)
slide off mountain side
hit curb sideways HARD and perfect angle
stock suspension too fast.
thats my guess
but i dont find it TOO common.
just part of the risk of drifting.
misnomer

The 240 has a very very low center of balance, there isn't much risk of it flipping. As far as drifting goes, most of the experienced drifters here tend to recommend starting off by learning on a factory car, and then modding once you've gotten it down.

Although, a limited slip is probably a good idea right away. (if you don't have one)

I think I saw that video; it was a white Evo right? Come to think about it, I believe it was a female driver.
Anyhow, thank you. This thread has a lot of pretty good info.

just practice your drift at some mudlot
you know.. dirt drifting haha
i practiced mine at some local mudlot (huge mudlot) at 2 am
i know its a lot different than drifting on an aspalt but you have to get the feel of it first..

:( dont do that
it will harden into a rock afterwards
learn on dry or wet asphault
on mud just makes a mess as well as a real hassle one day when your suspension bolts are caked on and rock solid.

i know i shouldnt do that..
wet aspalt is more like it but we rarely get any rain especially this time of season..
besides i have to get ready whenever texas has a drift events in the future (not soon though):(

sooner then you think bro. ;)
stay dry
start first gera, and do donuts, feel how your car react, initiate w/ weight transfer
work to second gear
back and forth go around cones and all that
its all about knowing and controlling your car
takes time and practice. practice safely and in a proper area please.
