View Full Version : New s14 sr20det, few questions.

Hey everybody, i did a search but found nothing. I would really appreciate someone that can chime in and help me out.
I just bought a 1996 s14 with sr20det 77k miles, mostly stock (FMIC, exhaust).
I noticed there is oil spurting out of the oil dipstick tube. I see it on top of the hoods insulation and along the sides near the dipstick tube. I did notice the dipstick was slightly pulled out. Is this normal for sr20det's?
I know this isn't the first time due to old oil marks near the same areas. could this have happened just from it being open slightly? Or is oil not supposed to be puled up that much?
Or it might be coming out of the valve breather... Where does it originally route too? i would like to remove this filter and put the proper piping to go to the correct spot.

Also, is there a place in this forum where it shows DIY mods, or a step by step newbie guide to basic parts upgrades? (bigger maf, injectors etc..)
Max boost on stock sr20det before getting bigger injectors, ecu?
Would i need a z32 MAF to boost more than stock?

dang looks like you should have made sure everything was in proper order before you bought a motor with "77k" so the guys says you bought it from.
1. have you checked compression?
2. happen at idle or only when your running the car?
really hard to find out what it is without proper information.

dang looks like you should have made sure everything was in proper order before you bought a motor with "77k" so the guys says you bought it from.

Motor has 3k miles.
The motor is newly rebuilt with receipts. The compression of motor on the paper says #1 148 #2 150 #3 149 #4 150
The head is lightly ported and polished.
Nothing happens at idle, but when i drive hard i think then it starts spurting out.

Most people will tell you that this happens due to bad rings....pressure getting into crankcase.
Looks like your compression is pretty good tho...hmmmmm

does your dipstick fit snug in the dipstick tube?
btw your pic looks like a s13 redtop motor not a s14 sr

Maybe you should do a compression test yourself!
Just a thought, since you only seen it on paper. GL!

for one make sure your dipstick fits down snug in the tube, if its loose, replace it.
next, do a compression check on your own. Does the motor sound like its running smooth?
Next its called PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve. If it allows pressure to be blown through into the valve cover, replace it or clean it out really good and see if that helps.
Next, Blowby is usually caused by one of two things. Poor sealing rings allowing excessive pressure to build up in the crankcase. Or you have a cracked ringland from detonation. But by the looks of the breather on the valve cover, its clean, Usually a cracked ringland you will have smoke coming from the breather and oil all over the breather and coming from the breather.
In heavy boost applications, blowby is innevitable and a catch can is usually required but with a stock turbo you should be getting very little if any blowby. It will be most apparent at the dipstick tube especially if it doesnt fit snug in there. The rwd sr's have an oring and you should feel it kinda snap in there. If its building soo much pressure its still blowing it out then you definetly have problems.
Find out a little more info about whats going on and check those things and get back with me.

Well, I checked the dipstick and it was VERY loose. When i take the dipstick out its easy, but putting the dipstick back in is a little tricky. So i got a new one. I pushed the car about 10 good pulls on the free way.
NO MORE OIL! :).
I bought a brand new PCV valve for the hell of it, it was only 5 bucks. It was the same as a sr20de.
About the catch can, im a little confused because i researched many pictures and it seems people put catch cans on the turbo side of the valve cover, but from what i understood isn't a catch can supposed to go in between PCV and intake manifold?
