So i searched the forums, google, dmv website etc. and i can't seem to find the answer to this simple question. Are salvage title vehicles required to be smogged every year at test only stations in california? I thought i had heard something about this but i'm not sure.

They should fall under the same policy as every other vehicle. Bi-annually.

if ur going to test only its a high polluter profile thing, not a salvage title thing.

i had to do test only every year on my salvaged s13. it might be based on counties. this was south orange county

sorry had to bump this thread because now whether or not i keep the car i just bought could depend on whether or not i have to smog at test only every year.....can anyone comment on their experiences for salvage title cars in san bernardino county? more specifically ontario?

cars from 80(?)-94 have to be smogged every year regardless if clean or salvaged, 95-00/01 every 2 years then 02+ every 5. well at least this is what the dmv clerk at work tells me. i work at a dealership

For vehicles from 1976 to present, it is bi-annually. A vehicle does not have to be smogged for the first 4 years that it is considered new. IE a 2005 year model will have to get smogged for the first time next year upon being registered. You also need to smog a vehicle when you transfer ownership, unless it is less than 4 years old.

As for whether you need test only or whatever, ask a DMV clerk. It seems random to me :p

Yup, very true.
Need smog every 2 years, but something its random it can be 1 year or 1/2.... its all depending on the dmv if its smog test or only regular smog check.

ya this seems more reasonable than what i was told at work. maybe the clerk at my work needs to do more research lol.

salvage title or not smog for 75-present is bi anually.

Once the car has failed and by alot out of range
it will be tagged high emitter profile.

Once taged high emitter profile, the car will need to be smoged yearly

hmm actually high emitter profile means it will be a test only i.e. you can only take it to a test only station. Been there too.

since were on the subject of salvage.

i know someone selling a car. but i guess it has a salvage title due to the owner not having a dealer license, he said it has to get a smog test and also a brake lamp test???? i dont understand. has anyone gone through something like that?

salvage cars go through a few tests before they are deemed safe for road use again.

dmv website has more info.

thought i'd update the thread for anyone who is interested. according to the clerk i talked to, the car must be smogged every other year, salvage title or not. looks like most of you were right. i'm assuming the poeple who associated yearly test only smog checks with salvage titles already had a high-emitter profile associated with the car.
