Alright, so me and a bud are swapping differentials this weekend. he wants my welded, and i want an open for now. we're changing out the entire differential pumpkin, none of the internals. what are some things we need to keep in mind when swapping? shimming? oil types? etc.

still a noob but from what i have read so far... if its the same car then there shouldn't be any issues. far as oil 75-90 i believe is required (redline, amsoil, motul). also read that if the diff has an ABS sensor the drive shaft is shorter but not a 100% sure on that cause there to many different opinions.
its a fairly easy job to drop the diff, i have the whole rear taken apart on my car waiting to put new bushing. just hope its as easy to put the sub frame back up.
please correct me if im wrong... as i said im a noob (but learning and having fun):hyper:

if you're swapping the entire pumpkin you don't have to shim the diff. it's plain plug&play.

Why would you drop the subframe?

Yeah just undo the bolts holding the axles on, disconnect the driveshaft, undo the mounts from the diff to the subframe, and drop the diff.

If you're swaping between s13 and s14 you'll have to swap the rear cover. If your swaping between ABS and non you'll have to change the rear section of the drive shaft. Like mentioned, check the bolt pattern on axles. Plug and play.

you can't shim an open differential.

Wow you guys are confusing
This is a differential

If you are swapping this into the same Chassis and trim model (ABS-ABS or NON ABS-NON ABS) then it is plug and play
This is a pumkin

You might have to shim this is you are swapping the pumkins seeing that not all pumkins are EXACTLY the same. You'll have to measure "back lash" to shim it correctly.
you can't shim an open differential.
They are talking about shimming the "Pumkin".

I thought the housing was the pumpkin....

when you install an lsd,http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i235/Neil_85/VFSH0114-1.jpg
or any differential into the pumpkin (differential housing) for that matter, you need to make sure it is shimmed correctly or you will have a wierd movement sound, in the axles, especially with an lsd you will notice more clunking, but abnormal clunking, and similar to that your subframe/diff is moving around.
all show no go

No deal,
you got em backward. If you were right & somebody bought an L.S.D. they'd get a limited slip housing? Plus the OP said they weren't gonna mess with internals, they were just gonna swap the pumpkins.

Woah. So much confusion in this thread.
The WHOLE UNIT is a pumpkin.
AKA THIS

THIS is the differential.

No matter what, if you remove a diff from the pumpkin you need to check backlash. Even if it's a removal/reinsert.
If the OP is simply taking out the pumpkin AKA the WHOLE unit, then its as simple as unbolting the diff and bolting it to the new car. No shimming, no nothing.
