View Full Version : PDM cams and modifying...

Heard cams for turbo setup were better for the intake being a little higher than exhaust. Was wondering, since the PDM cams are opposite of that, how hard or how much money would it cost to modify them to use the exhaust cam for the intake and vice versa and if it would even be worth it and/or pointless. Guessing it would be more work than it's worth but just a thought. Thanks.

i think you just have to get it reshimmed.. something like $8 per shim.. and there are many shims on the camshafts. you can of course get it cheaper..
also, iirc, the pdm camshafts are regrinds. from what i heard, regrinds suck. the only other ppl i remember makin good camshafts is jwt. not sure if those are regrinds either. also another alternative is to get the 91 'hot' cams. well, they are said to be 248 degree as oppsoed to the 2xx degree cams in other year kas.. b/s.. most ppl running turbo ka's jus use stock cams.. are you trying to be super hardcore and tune everything like get super cams to make a drag monster turbo ka from hell?

'91-'93 all use the same cams.

Nah I'm not trying to go hardcore, just looking into a little better top end i guess. What would be the highest I'd want to run? I think the JWT cams are like 270ish. Heard that something like that would be higher than I'd want.

272 is the highest duration you can go and still be streetable. beware though.. 272 degree will have rough idling and you might have to rev your car once in a while you are stopped to keep the motor from stalling...
best best is to go around 256 or 264.. thats good for moderate gains without going all out hardcore race car status.. you will notice the hp increase and it will still be bearable..

I know 2 people on this board running JWT cams with a KA-T.
270* duration, .391" lift. Seems badass.. I'll let you know my thoughts in a couple weeks.

i don't think that's true...
91 had better cams than 93
91 240sx: 0-60mph=7.9 sec
93 240sx: 0-60mph=8.3 sec
i think that's a nice list of numbers

late '93 models had no secondary butterflies.

beats me... what is the scondary butterflies do again? 'cause i recall people actually remove them to gain HP, but the idle becomes lame, and i never understood what it did...

primitive version of tvis, vtec, etc etc.
slow rpms, you require higher velocity air to mix w/ fuel for a smoother more complete burn in the combustion chamber.
iirc, the part no's for the cams are the same for '91s and '93s, i'll have to search on fresh alloy to be entirely sure.
performance gained from secondary butterfly's removal actually just allowed the engine to give the driver better throttle response.
at high rpms, you wouldn't notice a difference between having or not having the secondary butterflies.
---there is a difference between the s14 ka24de cams, they are more mild.
