Saturday is just about full. We still have a few spots open for the beginner group so anyone interested should get registered. It's a great opportunity for anyone who wants to try tracking their cars for the first time or get a feel for what it's like.
There will be many Advanced and Professional drivers there willing to help and give pointers.
Did I mention there will be COOKIES!!!???
In light of there being "Cookies," I have finally signed up for the time attack on Sunday in da KA Class..... They better be some good tasting cookies Tom or else I'll be tossing them hahaha! =P

Just do PayPal and get your payment in soon, by this weekend would be good, and you should be fine. This will be a great event for your first time on Streets, plenty of experience and support will be on hand. And yes Saturday would be the best choice of days as a beginner.
And You'll Get COOKIES!!!!!
THAT'S RIGHT FOLKS, COOKIES ON BOTH DAYS!!!!!!

Well, winning by two seconds is a blowout IMO. In real racing two seconds might as well be a minute... I am so bummed that I missed this event two god damn years in a row. I guess I'll just have to make it up at the redline time attack at buttonwillow next year.
Word! It doesn't matter if you win by an inch or a mile..winning's winning!

Yep 2 seconds is big yes but I guess I meant like 5-10 seconds sorry......
I know that a car that is 2 seconds a lap faster than his competitors in a race would be a big deal because it's stretched out over how many laps, etc. etc. So in that case, 2 seconds would be a blowout and a huge advantage.
Sorry that you couldn't make it out this year racepar1- Try to make it out next year dude! It's a lot of fun!

Ya, in a 20 lap race 2 seconds a lap is a 40 second gap at the finish. I'm used to thinking in 10ths and 100ths of a second...

LOL, Thanks very much. Yeah I think w/ some more chassie tuning 21's are right around the corner. Congrats on breakin through the 36' barrier, and to the rest of the KA podium. Matt's 1.30.xx, KA record?? Think so.. Freakin Awesome! :rawk:
My Recap:
With a fresh tune from Koji at Drift Speed, Fresh alighment, and Fresh set of Hankook's I was all set for Sunday's event.
Car Set-up:
I tried a few new things for this event.
First off was fresh tune from Drift speed Netting roughly 60whp+ and 30whp in midrange than before, the car was set on hp, and running better than ever. (Thanks Koji!)
Traction was always an issue since the turbo upgrade just due to power deverly but my friends at Hankook set-me up w/ fresh set of their Z214 (Dot r-comps) in (hard/endurance) compound which are essentially like shaved Nt01 (same compound i was told) would be a good fit for lightweight S-chassie. Size was 245/40/17 square, which was a little different from the 235/255 combo I usually run, but allowed me to run slightly less aggressive camber up front than normal.
On track:
On track the car felt pretty loose at first, but with new power and tires and 60 deg temps it was expected. Turns out the low track temps, and light weight car, and only few hot laps per session werent enough to get the tires up to proper temps. I constantly was air'n down the Hankooks from 33, 31, 30, 29 etc to get more heat in them. Each time adding more grip and stability.
On the power side I also turned boost down from 1.25 bar to .8 bar which dropped about 70-80whp but kept the car much strighter.
In the the end, I figured I needed at least 3-4 hot laps before i got any heat into the tires and from 4laps up times began to drop. Which resulted in a best of 1.22.3xx on my 6th lap, which was good enough for 1st place in SR class and possibly 1st overall. (final results pending :Ownedd: )
Next time around, I will try running the tires at 27psi or so to get heat in them sooner or running softer compound :naughty:
At the end of the day big thanks everyone for their help, couldn't do it with out you!:

Really??? From my experience you want to run more cold pressure on cold days to bring the tires up faster. I've never heard of anyone dropping pressure in order to help the tires come in sooner. Are you sure that you just weren't running higher pressure then the tires were designed to run??? I mean on our hoosier race slicks we ran 13psi/16psi cold almost all the time. I run in the high 20's/low 30's with my "street" tires. I would talk to the hankook boys if I was you because that is exactly opposite of everything that I know about tire pressures.
Congrats on the time, that's some commendable driving and car set-up. I wanna see a time sheet in the teens though... That is honestly my eventual goal at SOW CW. :naughty:

Was running Dunlop Direzza Star Specs....had to also air down to get heat into them due to the cold temps on track which sucked at first but when the temps came up after 3 laps, it was all good.

Thanks Paul for the compliment on the "KA Record" time. I honestly don't know what the best KA time at Streets is. I'll have an SR for next year so we'll see what I can do then.
I wanted to also thank Naoki and Grip/Drift Day ppl for putting on the event and everybody who came out. It was good to meet some of you and perhaps I'll check in to Zilvia a little more than my normal once/yr.
I was using ADVAN Neovas (AD07).

========================
This is correct for slicks, my street tire logic below is incorrect for the tires Paul had. My error. To get the most out of those tires, aero and possibly more suspension tuning is necessary to get the right amount of heat in them for use in such short sessions. Also, a softer compound would have been ideal for colder outside temps given the short run times.
Regarding tire pressures (there are a number of variables to consider but here is a simple version).... The sessions weren't very long (20 min at most) and with the race tires Paul was using, it isn't as much about pressure as it is about getting them hot so he was correct in bringing pressures down because that increases contact patch and even (if low enough) sidewall roll over but the benefit is that working the tire harder generates more heat (=grip). Without tire warmers, it is almost beneficial to have gone out with low pressure (not underinflated) to work the tires, come into hot pit, air the tire to your ideal cold pressure +1-2psi and go back out to set times. Higher cold pressure wouldn't have helped the tire generate more heat.
But this is difficult in such short sessions and potential traffic. Regardless, Paul was quick and I think he was able to get some clean laps in because you can't do a 1:22.xx with traffic. More time probably could have been had by finding the happy zone for the tires.

I did a 1.18.xx in my Shifter kart at Streets...lol
Thats almost verbatium what Hankook told me yesterday. My low psi's of the day were typically on the high side, but thats what chassie tuning is all about. Also going to try and up my spring rates, and add new LSd if possible.
I'll eventually get her dialed in.
Oh and Kenny did a 1.26.2xx, on starspec's
Thanks again =)

I don't have all of the results for all the different run groups but for now the N/A KA class result are:
1st place. Matt Johnson. 1:30.17
2nd place. John Hartendorp. 1:32.20
3rd place. Tom Flowers. 1:32.81
4th place Vanessa Lam. 1:34.12
5th place. Ray Diaz. 1:34.43
Gosh... I got beat by a girl by 0.31 seconds.... i think its time to get better tires than my direzza street tires (i should try your R1R tires onetime)... or at least gut my interior... or get headers or a one piece drive shaft... can't really do much on a KA on a budget... or maybe i should just stop drifting every corner... ya that should do that next time...
It was still fun playing cat and mouse chase with you Vanessa... of course you were the cat I was the mouse with the pink helmet since I was sliding all over the place.... :keke: I really need to learn how not to drift on a grip event...
Awesome event as always... I had loads of fun and i'm pretty satisfied with my 1:34.43 time since I was aiming to beat my old 1:36.50 time I had earlier this summer. (maybe the c-west headlight cover did help give me that extra .5hp)

I love your car, sick build! I had no idea. I thought you were SR the whole time out their. Autech S13 build FTW, So awesome! I'm pretty bumbed I didn't come by and say hi and check out your car.

lol. Thank you. I am SR, but no turbo.
I was too hesitant to meet every person, since it was my first time. People had more than one set of tires, tools and jacks at hand, and talking to amongst themselves. I didn't know how to approach. I didn't have any of that, lol.

you car sounds so good... you look pretty good out there for your first time out...
don't be hesitant to meet every person... I usually meet the nicest people in events like this than anywhere else... did you only drive the Saturday event?
Besides my tools, I too only has one set of wheels which is what I drove up there with and drove home with... which is also the same set i drive on everyday to and from work....
Sorry paul, I was not sure how much power you were pushing, driftspeed told me it was around 400hp when they tuned it but i just remembered now that you did drop the boost to keep her straight.. :) Your driving skill makes you look like you were pushing 400+hp... lol...

Thanks. Yes, I only attended Saturday. By the time the day was over, I wanted to attend Sunday, but I ran out of money.
I'll have to dedicate myself to meet everyone at the next event, which I look forward to participating in.

lol np i was just messin.
Koji was the man and did pull 403hp on his dyno and 378 tq at 1.25 but never got around to it at the track. Tried 1.0 even and that still was tough to handle on corner exits. Would have been nice to have a scramble button for the strights though =)

I gotta agree with xpertsnowcarver, I should have gone around to meet some people but was a little shy with it being my first track day and feeling like a noob watching people and their trailers. Definitely will have to do otherwise next time, met Tom tho- super chill guy.

:naughty:
That is what I was thinking also . I was gonna ask if the said presures were hot or cold?? Just to be clear before I say something.

You really need to work on your shifting and rev matching imo. Thats probably why you were having clutch issues.
Edit: roll your fenders too

Fenders are rolled. I raised the car and purchased stiffer sway bars to increase the spring rate to avoid rubbing the fender or top of the wheel-well, but I still have a considerable amount of roll. I may replace the front springs for 9kg springs.
Clutch is made of Kevlar. Don't really care about it over heating or glazing. I was intentionally shifting quickly just to get the quickest lap time I could. I'll be getting a carbon clutch kit soon.
I value your input; thank you. :)

That hole is still there. I dropped a tire into it 2nd to last session on Sunday. OOPS! I'm really glad
to hear that you all had a good time. That's really what its all about. Perhaps if the interest keeps up
we can do more events in 2010. What say you all!?

You made a hole on the track Tom??? Eh, no wonder I couldn't get a faster lap time! hahaha j/k =P
I 2nd the notion of doing more grip events- Maybe make it a semi-annual thang with one in the Spring and the other in the fall.
Oh and wanted to thank Driftday and Naoki and of course, you Tom for putting on the event! Was sooo much fun and wouldn't hesitate to do it again.
I have this desire to go faster at SOW because of Mr. Johnson posting a 1:30 KA time, haha. Something to look up to and shoot for. =)

Really all this talk about cold pressures is absolutely meaningless. It's all about hot pressures. I'm going to have to start recording hot tire pressure and temperature readings from now on to get where I want to go.
Teehee i found me!..
That was kinda cute! LOL! :p

Seriously all of your responses are indicative of the kind of interest we need to keep up.
These events are absolutely dependant upon entries so be sure to keep your eyes on the
forums and spread the word when you see our events posted. We'll be working on future
events in the upcoming weeks/months so don't forget to check in. We love this as much

I'm talking about corner entry and decelleraion. Under brakeing you don't heel toe downshift, and you acually lock up the rear wheels slipping the clutch. You need to rev match when down shifting. this unsettled the car and puts wear on the clutch and drive train. Just an observation

Oh! Right right, I clearly see what you're saying. Yes, I do need to work on that. I was actually trying to heel toe, but I'll admit I'm no pro at it. This is why we need more grip events, so I may practice.
