what does the sensor on the transmision closes to the short block do? Cause mine seems to look chewd up or melted .....

Can't remember the order, but the speedo senstor is on the tranny and the reverse sensor.

If I'm picturing it correctly that'd be the neutral switch - no biggie. The only other possibility would be the reverse switch (turns the reverse lights on when you put it in reverse), also not a huge problem if it doesn't work.
The VSS (speedo sensor) is all the way back, by the driveshaft.

there is no such thing as a 5th gear position switch. lol
that has to be the reverse sensor or possibly the neutral sensor
