This is my first post to this site seeing how im new here. i just picked up and installed an s13 sr20det. the motor still needs to be tuned but my question was that when the motor is first turned over it seems to tick. At first i thought valve guide but i've heard from a few people that the timing chain tensioner could also be contributing. After it hits a steady idle the tick goes away and it isn't noticeable when the motor is at higher rpms. Has anyone had the same or a similar problem?

Could be a noisy lifter or just usual cold start stuff. Takes a second or 2 to get the oil flowing thru the system and start lubricating things...

Ticking is what you hear from a clock or a fuel injector
Rattling on the other hand is what the timing chain sounds like. It is less consistent sound and more random than a perfectly timed tick.
I would make sure you are using a good 10W30 OIL as well, try some Lucas Oil Stabilizer (i.e. add about 3 full cups to your system) and see if that helps. If it does help than it was probably just some air in your Hydraulic lifters
